I shake my head yes, and cry even harder. I look over at Ward’s lawyer, who is crying too. I smile at him, he smiles at me, and he taps Ward’s back, then walks away. In the back of my mind, the question of whether or not his lawyer knew all along that Ward had a daughter lingers.
Ward has a hard time letting Annabelle back in her car seat. Ms. Gar hugs him first while crying, and then Janie. We all look at each other, and Janie hugs me so tightly. We cry in each other’s ears. We laugh as we wipe the moisture from our faces. The sky starts to cry too, so we get in the van. Ward never left Annabelle’s side. I sat there with my head on his shoulder, and fall into the most peaceful sleep I’ve had in a very long time.
