Stringer on the Assassins' Trail Page 17

by Lou Cameron

Old Nate, who didn’t miss much in his own town, laughed. “She don’t get off duty until after midnight, MacKail,” he said.

“I know,” Stringer replied. “I was planning on leaving without another look at that electric moose head. But as I see how easy it is to get in trouble anywhere in this noisy settlement, I may as well wait for that train in familiar surroundings.”

“I wish I could get a bet down on whether you make that next train or not,” Nate said, “because I just love to put my money on sure things.”

Stringer didn’t see any way he could collect on such a bet without indelicate remarks about a lady, so he passed on Nate’s offer to wager. And it was a good thing he had, for in the end he missed quite a few trains before he could get out of Granger, or even old Opal’s rose garden.
