Brent and Sarah have been getting pretty cozy and that's fine. As long as it doesn't affect my business, I have no problem with it. Hell I'm engaged to my assistant, who I hope will join me as full partner once we're married. That's a battle for another day. I have to say I look forward to it. I love when my woman's being feisty.
Just as I'm about to shut my computer down my office phone rings. I hope it doesn't take too long. We're all planning on celebrating Ilyanna's birthday that's in a few days and I'm already running late.
I debate sending it to voicemail but at the last second decide to pick it up anyway. “Braydon O'Donnell,” I answer brusquely. Hoping to discourage whoever it is on the other end and send the hint that I'm in a hurry. I hear sniffles and a clearing of a throat. “Hello?”
“Braydon, it's Sarah.” It's obvious she's been crying.
“Yeah Sarah, it's me. Are you okay?” I ask with genuine concern. I've never seen or heard her upset.
“Yes and no.” She sniffles in between words. I can tell she's pretty shook up, whatever it is.
“I'm going to need some time off. I was wondering if that's possible? I mean do you have anything I could do from home? I don't want to have to find another job and I just can't face coming into the office right now.”
Interesting, this obviously has something to do with Brent and I can't help but have respect for her not wanting to bring it into the work place. I don't want to pry. If she wants to talk about it she will. I'm not going to be the one to push her. Now Ilyanna and Rachel, they're a different story.
“That shouldn't be a problem. Let me and Ilyanna put our heads together. We'll come up with some documents and email back and forth until your ready to come back. And if you ever need to talk about it, just know we're here for you. Your one of us now and we take care of our own. Okay?” Hmmm, I wonder how long this will take to blow over. No doubt I'll get Brent's side of the story and Ilyanna will tell me Sarah's side. Great I'm going be stuck in the middle of this shit. Now I know how John felt.
“Thank you Braydon. I'm so sorry but I'm going to have to bow out of Ily's birthday dinner tonight.” I smile at her use of Ilyanna's nickname that's quickly grown on everyone in our little circle of friends. “Please tell her I'll call her tomorrow and make plans for a birthday lunch just us girls.”
“No problem. And Sarah, take all the time you need. When you're ready to come back just let us know.”
“Thank you so much Braydon. I really appreciate it.”
Hanging up the phone, I gather my keys and wallet and head out to spend the night with everyone closest to me. Mom and Dad had even decided to drive down to celebrate with us. Thinking of the gift in my pocket for my girl, I whistle as I close the door to my office behind me. How did I get so lucky?
Sometimes you just can't fight temptation.
