“Sure, white and sweet please, just like my women.” He said when I asked him how he took his coffee.

I laughed and made his cup. He sipped and nodded. “Perfect.” He said after lowering the cup to the table.

“So, what time does Ty need to be at school?”

“I usually get him down there at about eight forty-five, they ring the first bell at five to nine to get the kids in.” I said as I drained my cup. I looked at the clock on Sal’s microwave. It was almost seven.

“I’ll be ready in just a few minutes.” I said as I put the dishes in the sink. I went back into Sal’s bedroom and grabbed my shoes, the clutch purse and checked my phone. I sent Olivia a message and let them know I’d be back in time to take Ty to school.

“Ready when you are, Mack.” I said, watching the big guy drain his cup.

“Right, let’s roll.” He said as he escorted me back out to the elevator.

  #

Ty bounced up and down in excitement in the back seat of the Mercedes on the way to his school. I smiled and hugged him, when I took him to the gate. He waved at me before he went to meet up with his friends. Mack waited by the car for me. He opened the door and I slid in to the seat. As I put my seatbelt on, the cogs in my mind began to turn. It felt too surreal to be here, in this situation, too good to be true. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened them I noticed Mack looking at me in the rear view mirror.

  “Everything ok, Tess?” he asked.

“Yeah. All good.” I said. “I’m just a little tired, busy night last night.” I said, with a wry smile. Mack chuckled as he pulled away from the curb at the front of the school and joined the slow moving traffic.

He dropped me off at home. I quickly sorted the housework, vacuuming the apartment didn’t take long at all since we didn’t have much in the way of stuff. My phone beeped with a text message.

  It was from Gina

Tess, in a real bind here, Amy had a car accident and can’t work the Slip tonight, can you please fill in for her tonight. I’ll be eternally grateful! -G

I thought about it for a second, today was Thursday, my only other night off. I decided that if I was going to be missing out on my Saturday rates when I was out with Sal, I’d make up for it with this shift.

Sure, thing. I typed and sent the message. Within seconds my phone bleeped with Gina’s response.

OMG total lifesaver! Owe you! –G

I smiled and dropped the phone on the couch before I tackled the growing pile of clean clothing. I put away Ty’s clothes and then set on mine. I had a small dresser in the lounge where I slept on the couch. Living in a small, one bedroom apartment had its issues, but I wasn’t going to take a bed from my little boy. Sleeping in Sal’s bed last night though, wow. I never knew that there was such awesome comfort. A guilty part of my mind wanted to be back there, snuggled in under the blankets and relaxing on the soft mattress, inhaling his masculine, heady scent. I closed my eyes and drifted off sitting upright on the couch.

I was woken a few hours later to a knock on the door. I blinked away the sleep and got to my feet. Mack was there, holding my red dress and another bag for Sunday.

“Hey.” I said with a smile.

  “Sorry, did I wake you?”

“Yeah, but it’s okay, I should be getting up and getting dinner sorted for Ty and his sitter tonight anyway, I got called in to work bar at the Slip tonight, one of the girls had an accident or something Gina was saying.”

“Ok, I’ll pick you up at five then.” Mack said. I nodded and said my goodbyes. Mack was such a sweet guy, I was glad to know him. Part of me tried to think logically, telling myself that Mack was my... boyfriend’s employee. I smiled at that, Boyfriend.

I quickly made up something for Ty for dinner before it was time to go and pick up my boy. Olivia was more than happy to look after Ty, the girl was studying so hard for her end of year exams, plus I suspected that the extra money was being put away for her university costs. She was a smart girl and I knew he would do well in life.

  *****

Mack picked me up at five on the dot. His timing was impeccable. I gave Ty a kiss on the cheek and left him under Olivia’s care. Mack drove me in to the club where Gina was almost pulling her hair out.

“Oh my god, I am so glad you are here! We have three bachelor parties tonight, plus the regular Thursday crowd. I can’t thank you enough for coming in!” She said as I clocked on.

“No problem, happy to help.” I smiled. I headed out to the main bar at the Slip.

Three girls were working the stage, undulating their lithe little bodies against the poles, grinding their way through university. Men leered at them as they moved seductively, with the promise of more skin to be shown for the right amount of money. The night wore on with the crowd getting bigger, drunker and more rambunctious.

I felt someone grab my ass, pinching the cheek hard as I passed through with drinks on a tray. I had to pass back that way on my return to the bar, where my other cheek got the same treatment. “Assholes.” I muttered, batting away the pinching fingers with my hand.

I continued to work the floor, clearing empties, delivering drinks to private rooms where the sexual acts got hotter and raunchier as the night wore on and the alcohol flowed.

I was pulled aside into a dark corner by a guy who was so drunk that his eyes were bloodshot and his breath could melt metal. He rubbed himself against me, I pushed away, telling him I wasn’t on the menu. His rancid breath made me gag as his hands grabbed my tits. I shoved him way, reaching for the panic button as he came at me. His fist connected me hard on my cheek bone and I saw a flash of light behind my eyes. I felt him pulling up my top and trying to undo the button of my jeans.

  CHAPTER 1

I sobbed as my hand reached for the panic button and pressed it while he scrabbled at my clothing while I tried feebly to fight him off.

He had my jeans halfway down my hips, and my top pulled over the swell of my bra before Mack and his boys arrived. They took one look at me struggling against the guy and tore him away.

Mack helped me to fix myself up as I sobbed. My heart beat hard and fast in fear. Mack helped me to the back office in the Slip where I hugged my arms around myself and wept, my mascara running in rivulets down my cheeks, I held my hand against my cheek where a bruise was already beginning to form.

Mack had a first aid kit out of a cupboard in a moment and cracked an instant ice pack. He knelt down beside me and pressed it again
st my cheek in an attempt to stop the bruising.

I heard a commotion outside the door. Sal’s voice shouting.

“Where the fuck is she?” the door banged open and I jumped in fright. His face was fearsome, angry to the point of exploding. It softened when he saw my dishevelled state.

“Oh baby.” He said as he came and knelt before me. Mack shifted, I put my hand up and held the ice pack against my cheek. Sal pulled my hand away and caressed the chilled skin, he scowled when he saw the bruise that had darkened my skin.

“Son of a bitch, motherfucker.” He snarled. He kissed my temple and then turned to Mack. “Where is the fucker?” he asked Mack.

“We’re holding him in a store room until the cops arrive.” Mack said softly, standing in the dim light cast by the desk lamp. Sal nodded. “Ok, take her upstairs to my room, I’ll be up soon.” He turned to me and held me tight. “I’m sorry baby, this should never have happened. No one touches my woman.” He said, his voice angry and hurt.

“It’s ok, Sal, I’m fine, it is only a bruise.”

“Tess.” Sal said softly, dangerously. “It could have been much worse is you hadn’t pushed your panic button and Mack and the boys got to you.” He pulled me close against him, and I could hear the hard beat of his heart in his chest. “I’d never forgive myself if he hurt you in any way.” He kissed me gently then let me go. He turned to Mack. “Make sure she stays in my room, give her anything she needs.”

Mack nodded and helped me to my feet. Sal watched us go. We walked down a service corridor, past a storeroom where I heard someone screaming and the dull thud of flesh on flesh. I ignored it and let Mack hustle me past the store room to the staff elevator.

I lay on the soft bed in Sal’s bedroom, Mack had left the door open slightly and I could hear the TV on in the lounge. Mack had left me to recover. The door opened slowly and Sal came in. I could smell the scent of his cologne and something else, something metallic. He picked up the used ice pack that had now melted into a watery bag. He took it into the bathroom and threw it in the bin there. I heard a crunching as he prepped another one. The bed dipped as he settled down beside me and I felt the chill of the chemical reaction as the ice pack was pressed gently against my cheek.

Sal’s free hand came and caressed my temple shifting a strand of hair that had fallen loose from my ponytail. “You need to keep this on, or the bruise will look nasty, don’t want those snobs thinking I mistreat my girl at the charity ball now do we?” I shook my head and smiled.

“Just rest here, I’ll have some food brought up to you later.” I reached up and put my hand over his. His knuckles were wet. I pulled my hand away and looked at my fingers. There was blood on them. I sat up quickly. The sudden movement caused my vision to blank out for a second before the starts burst, returning my vision in an opening iris-like effect. I grabbed his hand and looked over his knuckles.

“What’s this…?” I said as I held his hand and caressed the raw broken skin on his knuckles.

Sal pulled his hand away and covered it with his other hand, similar damage was on the knuckles of that hand as well.

“It’s nothing, you just rest. I’ll be back later to take you home. I have a few things to do, have to fill out a statement with the police.” There was a knock on the door and Mack peeked his head in.

“Sorry to bother you Sal, but Detective Haynes is here to see you, he wants to ask Tess a few questions as well in regards to what happened.”

Sal turned to me and kissed my unbruised cheek. “Are you up to speaking to the detective?” he asked.

I sat up and nodded, “I’ll be ok.” I shifted off the edge of the bed and got to my feet, Sal was there beside me, taking my arm gently as if I was a delicate flower. He led me out to his lounge where the TV had been muted, The Godfather was playing and the scene where Don Corleone was taking requests at his daughter’s wedding was running across the screen. Sal turned the TV off with a muttering before Mack showed the detective in.

Det. Haynes was dressed casually in a button up shirt and slacks, his shoes however were buffed to a high shine. Sal sat down on the armrest of the lounge chair that I had been nestled in, I held the ice pack in my hand, bringing it up when the bruise began to sting a little more than was comfortable.

“Hello, Tess Williams, is it?” the detective said. I nodded, confirming my name to the detective as he sat down on a couch across from me. He took out a notepad and started to write on it.

“Now, if at any time you need to stop, let me know and we’ll give you a break. In your own words, tell me exactly what happened tonight.” He looked expectantly at me. I took a sighing breath and began to recount my side of the story.

“And at any time, did you offer him anything, sexual in nature?” the Detective asked. My eyebrows shot up and I tensed. Sal put a hand on my shoulder, his own hand trembling.

“Are you kidding me? Did I offer any sexual favours? Ah… no, hell no.” I said, angry that this detective might have even thought that I had offered the guy free reign over my body.

“Not at all?” the detective asked again.

“Seriously?” I sputtered. “Watch the damned CCTV footage, there’s cameras everywhere in the club. I was walking past him, heading back to the bar when he grabbed me, pulled me into the corner and then assaulted me when I tried to get free of him.” I said, getting up and starting to pace. Sal took me into his arms and held my body as it trembled with anger.

“Okay.” The detective said I heard the pen scratching on the pad.

“And you say Mr Carelli that the suspect managed to get away from your security team and escape?” Haynes asked Sal. I paled visibly, Sal reached his arm around my shoulders and pulled me close

“That’s right, I’ll be enquiring as to exactly how that happened myself.” Sal said, I could feel the temper in his voice flaring up.

“All right, I’ll want to take a look at the footage, I think that will be all I need from you Miss Williams.” Haynes said as Sal tightened his arms around me, pressing a kiss to my forehead.

“The club will be pressing charges against this guy if he is caught.” Sal said, my heart melted again. He was trying to make sure I was ok, stroking my hair and calming the angry pulse in my head. I looked up at him, catching his eye before I lay my head against his chest. The detective got to his feet and shook Sal’s hand, then Mack’s. “Well gents, it’s always a pleasure to see you, despite the circumstances we often come to meet over. Miss Williams, all the best, things will work out, but if we need any more information, we will be in contact.” Mack showed the detective out of the penthouse. I heard the soft ding of the elevator as the doors opened and they left the floor.

Sal took me back into the bedroom, lay me down on the bed and then gently kissed me into submission. He didn’t try to make love to me that night, just held me close, which was better than any sex yet to date.

Being held by him made me feel safe, secure and loved. I drifted off to a deep sleep in Sal’s arms to be awoken later when he shifted to get off the bed. Mack came and collected me, taking me down to the familiar Mercedes with the darkly tinted windows, taking me home and escorting me right to my door.

I closed the door and let Olivia go home before I took a hot shower and lay down on the couch, thinking over how much this man had protected me, comforted me and wanted to ensure that I was safe. I smiled, thinking that this one, this man was a keeper.

  CHAPTER 2

I almost didn’t recognise myself. The bruise was still there on my cheek, but the purplish mark that marred my face wasn’t as bad as it had been yesterday, and I still only applied a slight bit of makeup-. I was proud of my war wound, I’d earned it, why not show it? Besides, if I wore too much makeup, I’d probably resemble Mitzi Del Bra, the character played by Hugo Weaving from Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. And I had no intentions of resembling a Drag Queen if I could help it.

I had gone in early for Friday and Saturday’s shifts, havi
ng a romantic pre-work dinner with Sal at his request. The girls I worked with had begun to suspect something was going on between us, they giggled and teased me throughout my next two shifts in the main club. I smiled to myself, which only made their speculation fly harder. I knew I had fallen hard for the guy.

I looked down at the indigo blue dress that reached the floor. A pair of matching heels adorned my feet and a sapphire and diamond pendant was slung around my beck on a silver chain. Olivia came to the bathroom door and knocked.

“Your date is here Tess.” Olivia said with a smile.

“Ok I’m coming.” I applied a tiny bit of perfume before I stepped out of the bathroom, turning off the light as I closed the door. Sal was chatting to Ty, who handed him a picture that he had drawn, it was supposed to be a transformer or a ninja turtle, I couldn’t figure it out quite yet, but Sal complemented Ty on his art, he rolled it up and held on to it, thanking my beautiful, considerate boy for the picture. He turned and the look on his face made me think that there was something wrong with my outfit.

“What is it?” I asked, running my hands over my body and looking for a tear or a stain or anything. Sal came up and took my hands in his, his knuckles still a little red from whatever had damaged them. Ne lifted my hands to his lips and kissed my own knuckles.

“Nothing. Nothing is wrong Tess, you are so beautiful.” He said, taking my face in his hands and pressing a kiss to my lips. His hand gently caressed the skin over the bruise, a slight frown on his face. “I wish I didn’t have to share you with the rest of the guests at this ball, but we have to get going.” I grabbed the blue sequined clutch that had come with the dress, gave my boy a goodbye kiss and hug and we left my apartment.

The drive to the ball was quiet, Sal sat next to me with his arm around my shoulders, pulling me tight against his side. The warmth of his body against mine comforted me. We arrived at the red carpeted function to flashes of cameras and journalists trying to get a glimpse of the big names that were attending.
