“You must be Ferdinand.” He thrusts his hand out, and I take it. The man has a firm handshake. “You’re the prince that stole my fiancée.”
Next to me, Lex pales, but I can tell that James is being humorous, so I give him another pump of our hands. “I saw her first, though.”
He nods. “You did, didn’t you? Well played.” His gaze lands on our daughter, who blows bubbles. He squats to bring himself to her eye level. “And you must be the little miss princess Iris.”
He waggles a finger in front of her and lets out a gasp when Iris grabs it and puts in her mouth.
Lex meets my eyes with an incredulous look, begging me to help, which I do. Iris angrily swings her feet as I help him remove his finger with an audible pop. “Careful, everything goes right into her mouth,” I tell him. “Even fingers.”
Suddenly, James bursts out laughing. Pure, infectious laughter, and I find myself joining in, as does Lex. As if Iris broke the tension between us with her antics. Yet another reason why I’m grateful for my daughter.
“Looks like life is going beautifully for you then, Alex,” he says as he turns down the handkerchief I offer him. He wipes his slobbered finger on his trousers. “I’m glad you’re happy.”
Lex’s fingers entwine in mine, fitting my hand perfectly. “I am happy,” she says. She looks up at me, our eyes meeting as she smiles. “I’m so very happy.”
