Epilogue
Five Years Later
Today was the fifth anniversary of the opening of Eve’s Baked Goods. As I went about my morning routine of starting the baking for the day I reflected back on the last few years and I still felt like the luckiest woman on the planet.
The first year after we got married Ellis bought me the house of my dreams. It was only about a thirty-minute drive from the bakery and it was perfect. It was a two story, four bedroom with the cutest wrap around porch and a huge backyard. But by far the best feature were the fireplaces, yes, there were two. A huge one in the living room and one in the bedroom. We’d had a lot of sexy fun in front of that fireplace.
The book I wrote was doing fairly well. Dr. Grey’s publisher friend loved it and decided to publish it. We were on the fourth printing of a thousand books. It thrilled me that people were reading my words. I’d received quite a few emails from people telling me how much my book had helped them.
Eve’s Baked Goods had been so successful that last year we’d opened up a second location and it was doing just as well as the first one. It hadn’t taken long for me to get a regular following and the special of the day kept people coming back. Business really took off when I got a few contracts to make desserts for some high-end restaurants. When I first started it was just me in the back baking and mom running the front, now I had twenty employees. Some days it still seemed unreal. I really didn’t need to come in and open the bakery every day, but I loved it. I loved creating the things that people enjoyed.
I heard the front door open. I knew that would be Mary, she was the first person I hired and was a heck of a baker. We hurried to get everything done for the morning rush. At 7:00 we opened the doors and I was surprised at who was waiting outside this morning. It was Ellis and our three-year-old daughter Jackie. It was actually Ellis’s idea to name her after Jackson. I had cried when he suggested it.
“Mommy!” she yelled as she came in the door and ran to me.
“Hi sweetheart,” I said picking her up. She gave me a huge hug and kiss. Ellis was right behind her.
“Good morning honey,” he said kissing me.
“Not that I don’t enjoy seeing you but what are you doing here?”
He handed me a bouquet of flowers. “Happy bakery anniversary honey.”
“Aww, you remembered.”
“Of course, I did. We’d better get going though. I need to take this little monkey to moms and I don’t want to be late to work.” He took Jackie from me and gave me another kiss.
“Take something for the road,” I told him.
He went over to the display case and helped Jackie pick out her goodie for the day. I gave each one of them a final kiss before they left and went to help some customers.
Over the last ten years I’d had many ups and downs. From the accident and relearning to use my arms and legs to meeting and marrying the man of my dreams. If you would have told me back then that I would be married to a lawyer, own two bakeries and have a three-year-old daughter I would have said you were crazy. It’s funny the way life works sometimes. Over the years I’ve learned a few things that I try to live by. Things happen for a reason even if you can’t see it at the time. Staying positive can save your life. But the number one thing is to be open to all possibilities because you never know what life has to offer.
