I didn’t answer, and Ruin must have felt my panic through our pack bond, because he shut up and guarded my back.
Ruin held up a ball of Ignis fire as we headed through the city archway and out into the darkness beyond. Dried troll blood stained the bridge out of the city, but it didn’t stick to our boots as we ran through. No one stopped us. If Ravage left any warrior presence here, they were hiding well. We took the cave we came in through more cautiously, but there was no reason to. No one was here.
Ruin and I stepped out into the cavern where there had once been a thick forest. Now, there was only a field of pale mud. Freezing water dripped from the ceiling above, landing on the ball of Ignis fire Ruin held and making it hiss. He didn’t even seem to notice.
He crouched down and held the fire just over the dirt. “How is this even possible?”
“Ravage.” My heart froze at the sight. How could I think we had earned a bittersweet victory? The only thing that didn’t go along with Ravage’s plans was his own capture. I had no doubt that he would find a way to escape as soon as Kori was strong enough to survive on her own.
“Yeah… but, where did the trees go?”
There was no doubt in my mind where Ravage sent his deadly and merciless family. “Seattle. Ravage sent them all to Seattle.”
