Snow White Sorrow (The Grimm Diaries) Page 40

by Cameron Jace

Carmen: Loki’s devoted car. She’s a red 1955 Coupe Deville. She plays music by dead bands that might have never existed according to the atmosphere and what’s going on around her.

The Pumpkin Warriors: one of Loki’s favorite bands. They like to talk to him and give him a hard time when he cops out. Oh, and you can hear them snoring in the radio when they’re asleep.

Pippi Luvbug: she liked Loki a lot in Snoring, but turned out to be a demon. Charmwill killed her but it’s not guaranteed she won’t come back.

Donnie Cricketkiller, Beebully, and Beetlebuster: Loki calls them The Three Blind Mice. They’re vampire hunter rivals who used to bully him in Snoring. Snow White did Loki a favor and killed Donnie in the cellar.

The Tweedle Girls. Dee and Dum, according to Axel, were friends of Big Bad. They lived a very short life.

Itsy and Bitsy: Fable’s favorite spiders. One is depressed because he was in love, and he hates Axel, the other is too small to be depressed, he helped Babushka with cooking.

Godmother Justina: blind mother of justice in the Fairyworld. She has troubles with her scale. Snakes always outweigh apples, but she’s still trying. Her intentions are that everyone sees justice, although she is blind herself.

The Brothers Grimm: for some reason, they forged the fairy tales and cursed the fairy tale characters into a Sleeping Death. Their names are Jacob and Wilhelm, and they will appear soon.

The Mermaids: they like to welcome everyone in the Missing Mile, giggle, and splash water. They thought Loki was really cute.

The Whale: is practically the island of Sorrow. No one knows how long he’ll stay put before he rolls over.

Genius Goblin: creator of the Harum Scarum forum, dedicated to tracking the vampire princess. Loki swears he’s going to kick his ass one day.

J.G.: writer of the diary Axel found in the library.

V.H.: wrote most of the articles in the Dreamhunter’s notebook.

  Belly and Beast Menu:

Although they have a huge menu, so far we saw Axel and Fable eat the following:

Sticky Sweet Bones: you have to lick the sweets before you eat the bones.

Tragic Beans: they will eventually make you cry and laugh in the same time.

Coffinmuffins: don’t eat the carrot in the muffin.

Poisoned Apples: kinda gets you high. Because they’re so delicious, you pass out for a minute and then you wake alright. You can grab yourself another one then.

Cinderella Mozerella: Axel likes these but he hasn’t talked about them yet.

Reluctant Jelly: hard to get a grip on.

  Places and other things

Snoring: a very boring town in the Ordinary World that has vampires. Loki used to live there. Locals like to call it the Great Snoring. Founder: Snoring von Boring the II.

Hell: a number of towns in America that probably all serve as a portal to Sorrow. There are no towns called Heaven.

Sorrow: an island on the back of a whale where many fairy tale characters live. Very few know that it’s surrounded by the Missing Mile on all sides. Two hundred years ago, it used to be the Kingdom of Sorrow.

The Missing Mile: an endless sea surrounding Sorrow. It’s only visible to a few people, and it holds many secrets of the Fairy World.

Dragonbreath: what Charmwill smokes in his pipe. Smoking it isn’t easy. It lets him breathe out fire sometimes.

Alicorn: Loki’s special weapon given to him by his mother. It’s a unicorn’s horn. Someday, Loki intends to find the unicorn and give it back.

Sesame: a fortune cookie that Loki used to make his decisions for him.

Wondersack: given to Loki by Charmwill. It holds a lot of useful instruments in it.

Waker: an hourglass that can be adjusted to the Dreamhunter’s liking. It times how long one stays in the Dreamworld. Once the sand falls through, the dream ends.

Incubator: a word that if whispered into the dreamer’s ear, lets them remember a certain dream or memory where the dream should take place.

Magic Dust: makes you sleep. Some people are allergic to it, and it makes them laugh. It is very useful with bullies.

Books of Sands: books that dissolve into dust one page at a time once you read them.

Dreamhunter’s notebook: a notebook used to learn Dreamhunting, most of the pages are written by a V.H.

J.G.’s diary: a diary Axel found in the library. It probably belongs to Jacob Carl Grimm.

Sleeping Death: a condition where someone is cursed to sleep forever, it’s also used as a term meaning when someone is in a dream and their body is inanimate as if in a coma.

Dreamory: a dream that is based on the dreamer’s memory

The Dreamworld: the place where all Fairy Tale characters live and fairy tales take place.

Jawigi: the Brothers Grimm secret word to enter the Dreamworld.

Epidaurus Circle: the circle that encompasses the two mirrors, the dreamer and the Dreamhunter inside.

Dream Temple: everything inside the Epidaurus Circle.

Enchanta (Chanta for short): only Loki’s mom and Charmwill know what it really is. But Loki was sort of able to use it.

Obol coins: used on the eyes of the dreamer so they can’t connect the Dream World with the waking world.

Ora Pedora: an incantation Loki uses to make his Alicorn work

Swamp of Sorrow: a swamp in Sorrow that you have to cross to get to the Black Forest. Skeliman used to be the ferryman there. If you don’t like frogs, don’t go there.

The Belly and the Beast: best place to eat in Sorrow. Sticky Sweet Bones and Tragic Beans are said to be the best. The menu is much bigger though.

Buried Moon Cemetery: myth has it that the real moon is buried there.

The Schloss: the castle where Snow White was imprisoned. It was also the Sorrow’s royal family’s residence two centuries ago. It appears when it wants to. It also has a bad temper. You don’t want to go there, at least not with Axel.

Juniper Trees: spying trees that have eyes.

Rumpelstein High: the only high school in Sorrow, owned by the mysterious Mr. Rumpelstein. It’s at 1812, in the neighborhood of Nefilheim.

Bedtime Stoories: you’d say it’s misspelled but the school thinks it’s a unique name for a library that has dark corridors that lead to another library where you can find un-forged books.

Candy House: where Axel and Fable live. It’s an awesome house. In case you would like to visit, it’s at Seven Breadcrumb Street.

The Black Forest: a dark forest where Snow White was born and nothing is as it seems.

The Children of Hamlin: the kids Charmwill was reading to in the beginning. There’s a lisping girl, a gapped-tooth girl, and adventurous boy. Don’t make fun of them. They’re going to be badass at some point.

Santa Claus: Charmwill doesn’t think it’s cool that he enters houses without permission, but they seem to be good friends, too.

The Vampire in Forks: the vampire Loki killed and was resurrected. People say he appears in the twilights.

Dork Dracula: he’s not a dork at all.

The students dressed as The Wicked Witch of the West, Robin Hood, Prince Charming, Cinderella, and the Bunny Girl: they’re all dead now. Don’t bother

Murder house at 112 Ocean View: It’s the Amityville Horror house’s addressed. Loki didn’t know that, but everyone died in that party, so forget about it.

Jeanette and Amalie Hassenpflug: Angel’s fake parents. They were vampire slaves but they managed to escape and never be seen again. They are the true tellers of Snow White’s fairy tale. The Brothers Grimm collected the story from them.

The Closet: a hangout for Boogeymen

Baby Tears: what Boogeymen live for

Spooky Woogy Boo: the proper way to salute a Boogeyman. You can say, ‘that’s so boo’ if you see something cool as well.

Awooo: the annoying way to summon the Bullyvards/werewolf friends.

The Bullyvards: bad dudes who hurt other students, mostly werewo
lves. Loki loves to kick their asses, but then he has to run.

Jolly Roger: the pirate ship that attacked Angel and Carmilla. Some say it’s led by a man called Captain Hook.

Styria: the home of the Karnsteins.

Dhampir: in Slavic folklore, it’s a vampire who is born of one human and one vampire parent. It has the power to kill all vampires in the world and is stronger than a regular vampire.

Abe Noxious: Sorrow’s most famous tattoo artist.

Lohr: a town in Germany that seems to be the family’s origin. It has a caste called the Schloss, and a mysterious history. It’s a true town, like almost everything above. Some people just don’t know it.

Skeliman the Ferryman (sometimes the Libraryman): although he’s not a place, we decided to mention him here, because we’re not sure if he’s even real. No one knows if he’s a myth, but he scared the skeletons out of Axel, and seems to appear every in the Harum Scarum forum. Hopefully, Loki and his friends will meet him someday.

  Author’s Notes:

For the lovely readers who have read The Grimm Diaries Prequels, you might expect to read a lot of notes in this book. Although Snow White Sorrow is full of allusions and secrets, I’d prefer they’d be revealed slowly through the rest of the series. I didn’t want to add a lot of notes and spoil the fun of rereading or discovering them by the readers themselves. So I am only going to mention some facts that don’t spoil anything for the fun of it. I hope you like them:

  - The Vampire Craze did happen. People were killed and tortured when they were only ill but thought of as vampires.

  - Towns called ‘Hell’ exist everywhere in the world.

  - The Great Snoring is the name of a real town, too.

  - Lohr is the name of a real town in Germany. If you visit it one day, you’ll see how it’s related to Snow White. It feels like a small fairy tale location. It’s real fun.

  - The Schloss is a real castle. It’s located in Lohr, but it’s not that evil in real life—or is it?

  - There is no such thing as Sticky Sweet Bones—unless you live in Sorrow, of course.

  - The disease that people mistook for vampirism in ancient times was cured by ingesting blood into the liver. This is a true fact. When it was discovered, people thought it was a way of resurrecting those they thought of as vampires so they decided to destroy the liver with the heart to make sure the ‘vampire’ wouldn’t get resurrected.

  - Jeanette and Amalie Hassenpflug are the original tellers of the Snow White fairy tale.

  - Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm did release the original story of Snow White with the Evil Queen being her mother. They changed it fifty years later, in 1857, to a stepmother. No one knows why for sure.

  - In one of Cinderella’s original versions, the pigeons did pick out her evil stepsister’s eyes. Actually, more horrible things happened to their mother.

  - Almost all original fairy tales were filled with gore and blood.

  - Prince Charming never kissed Snow White in any original version. This is also, a fact.

  - Snow White woke up when the piece of apple was pulled out of her throat in the original version.

  - The Sleeping Death is true, and it was mentioned by the Brothers Grimm in the Snow White story.

-The ‘Follow Your Bliss’ phrase is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Campbell, a great mythologist, and a greater inspiration to me.
