Let There Be Dragons (The Children of Ankh Book 3) Page 30

by Kim Cormack

Kayn felt his arms around her as she groggily opened her eyes and it felt perfect for a second, until she became nervous that she’d overslept. He’d obviously just climbed into bed beside her and fallen asleep. He was supposed to wake her up. She tried to move.

He tightened his embrace and whispered against her hair, “Haley drove and now Astrid is driving. You’re fine.”

What time is it? Where were they?

He chuckled, “I drove for three more hours after you went to sleep. I came to bed around twelve thirty. Astrid was planning on driving for at least four hours with Haley. After they were done Dean was going to take over until Zach woke up. Lexy and Grey have a lot to talk about. They’re still trading off in the truck.”

Kayn relaxed in his arms and tried to close her eyes and go back to sleep. That wasn’t going to happen. She felt like she’d had more than eight hours of sleep already.

Frost slid his hand down to her hip and seductively whispered, “If I were you. I’d get as much sleep as I could right now. As soon as we reach our destination, we get a whole twenty-four hours …alone.”

Her pulse raced. There would be no chance of going back to sleep now.

Frost started to laugh. He groaned, “Well, now that I’ve put that out there, I’m wide awake. If you want to get ready first, I’ll go and make us some coffee.”

She didn’t want to leave his arms. Kayn slid out of bed. She grabbed her backpack and made her way to the tiny bathroom. After she closed the door behind her and locked it. She stared at her reflection in the mirror. She wasn’t nervous or stressed out about the day alone with him. She’d been ready for this part of her life to begin for a while. It felt right. She brushed her teeth, washed her face and even put on a little bit of makeup. Oh, shoot! She soaped down her legs and did the fastest shaving job ever accomplished by a human being without having to go to the emergency room for stitches. She wandered out of the bathroom and balanced her way down the hall where he slowly maneuvered past her for his turn in the bathroom. Kayn stuck her head into the front and asked Dean if he wanted a coffee. He opted out, saying he only had an hour left and then it was his turn to get some sleep. Kayn poured one for herself and before she’d done anything to it Frost reappeared wearing a black t-shirt with a v neckline and jeans. He hugged her and nuzzled her neck with his freshly shaven face. His aftershave made the intoxicating scent of his skin even more amazing. She draped her arms around his neck and sighed in his ear, “How many hours are left in this drive?”

He chuckled as he nuzzled her neck again and teased, “Only eight or nine more hours and then we’re on our own.”

  That sounded heavenly.

Frost poured himself a coffee. He sat down at the table and announced, “They’re splitting us up for the next job. My crew, meaning Grey, Lexy and Lily. We’ll be doing one of the jobs and you five will be doing the other.”

Kayn slid onto the bench seat next to him, took a sip of her coffee and questioned, “Which group gets Dean?”

He swallowed another gulp of coffee and replied, “We do. This next job will be another first for the five of you. Zach and you will be enrolling in high school. The Aries Group has taken care of the paperwork. The others will remain at the campsite. They’ll be there as your back up. You’ll be hanging out and going to classes while you wait for someone’s Correction. You’ll be taking them with you if they survive. We’ll meet back up when both jobs are finished.”

  It didn’t sound that hard.

He smiled at her and whispered, “I never does.”

Kayn smiled at him because he’d responded to her thoughts as though she’d spoken them aloud again.

He rested a hand on her knee as he leaned over and whispered in her ear, “There’s an upside to separating us into two groups. We’ll be able to get through the list of jobs faster and we’ll have more down time.”

Zach appeared from the hallway and asked, “Hey lovebirds, is that coffee fresh?”

Once her shift started with Zach up front, time whizzed by and in the blink of an eye they’d crossed the border into Canada. By midafternoon they turned off to drive down a long winding dirt road that led to the campground they’d be staying at.

  Touched

Kayn stepped out of the RV and her senses were instantly flooded by the fresh scent of the forest. She wandered out into the campsite. They’d be staying here for a whole week. The idea of planting temporary roots even if it was teeny tiny week long ones felt glorious. Kayn stared up at the familiar feeling lush greenery. She adored this Province. It felt so wonderful to be back where the trees towered majestically above her. It was oddly comforting. She’d be escaping to go on a trail run at some point. The group was already rushing around, each of them doing their usual part in setting up the campsite. Someone grabbed her shoulder and she spun around. It was Lexy.

Her fellow Dragon said, “You two need to be back here, no later than noon tomorrow. Go inside and grab your bag.” She released her shoulder.

What was she supposed to say? Thank you for giving us time off for an uninterrupted booty call? Kayn grinned at her own humorous thoughts as she quickly scaled the couple of steps that led into the motorhome. Just as she grabbed for the handle, Lexy called after her, “Have fun!”

And this situation just became even more awkward. If that was possible… Kayn turned around and gave her friend a slow nod as she stepped into the RV and allowed the door to slam shut behind her. The second she was alone, her mind flooded with nervous energy. She’d evolved in so many ways since she’d become Ankh, but this particular scenario was intensely mortal and long overdue. She grabbed for her bag and missed. Kayn giggled and reached for it again. Oh, she was a nervous wreck. She strolled back to the door. She was really about to do this. Just as she reached for the door it occurred to her that every last one of them knew exactly where she was going and what she was about to do. Kayn winced as she opened the door and descended the couple of steps to the ground. She was fairly certain she’d be able to maintain a straight face as long as nobody attempted to give her any pointers. Enter stage left…her Handler. Zach raised one of his hands in an epically inept attempt to high five her. She slowly shook her head from side to side and winced. He was quietly giggling as he dropped his hand to his side. Where in the hell was Frost? They needed to leave before someone else attempted to high five her.

He appeared from the other side of the RV with his own bag in hand and asked, “Ready to go?”

Zach gave her a thumbs up. She pursed her lips to stop herself from laughing, cleared her throat and replied, “So ready. Let’s get out of here.” As they strolled away from the group she heard the snickers coming from the peanut gallery. Yes, she’d walked right into that one with her response. The lack of privacy within their clan had always been a double-edged sword. It was good because you were never alone. If something was wrong, you had this amazing extended family that always had your back but this situation was just mortifyingly awkward.

Frost unlocked the truck. They quickly got in. He turned the key and she smiled at him as they drove away. As soon as they turned the first bend in the dirt road, they both burst out laughing.

He looked at her and teased, “Think of the bright side, after tonight, nobody will care about what we do. The novelty will be gone.”

That was true… She slid her hand on top of his and asked, “Do you know where we’re going or are we just winging it?”

He grinned while paying attention to the road and responded, “It’s not far.”

They turned back out onto the highway. The trees and mountains made her feel like they could be close to her home town but she knew they were still on the mainland. They drove for about twenty minutes down the highway before pulling into a fancy hotel with a log cabin look and a scenic view of the mountains.

He smiled at her and announced, “This is it.”

It looked like a place you’d book for your honeymoon. Kayn was a bit nervous as she grabbed her backpack and
stepped out of the truck but she didn’t doubt her choice for a second. It felt right.

They strolled towards the entrance together and he gallantly held open the door for her. She was blown away by the interior. A waterfall ran down the side of the wall into a stream that flowed through the center of the lobby with see through glass over top. They walked over it on their way to the front desk. The man working behind the counter referred to them as Mr. and Mrs. Brown and he congratulated them on their nuptials.

The kind looking man ushered them towards the elevator and announced, “You newlyweds will be staying in one of our most luxurious honeymoon suites. You will find your little slice of heaven on the sixth floor. It’s clearly marked on the door. There’s room service at any hour and the items you’ve requested are already in the room. Please call me, if there’s anything else you need.”

Frost opened his wallet and handed the man a couple of bills. The door closed behind them and he backed her into the corner of the elevator. His lips met hers tenderly. He tucked her stray curls behind her ears on either side, gazed deeply into her eyes and whispered, “Are you sure it’s me?”

He’d grazed his palm against her cheek, ever so slightly during the intensely loving gesture and her pulse raced in response to his most innocent touch. The attraction between them had been there long before she’d fed off his ability. Perhaps, a part of it had come from her twin’s love for him when their souls had joined. If she was telling the truth she’d felt him awaken something reckless and wild within her the moment they met. She’d turned around and found him sitting there shirtless on her bed, the night he’d marked her Ankh. He’d kept his distance when it was the right thing to do and selflessly let her go so she could have closure with Kevin. He’d been the one to stand with her before she dropped into the Testing. He’d given her little information but the look in his eyes had warned her of the horrors in the Testing beneath her feet. He’d been there for each defining moment in her afterlife.

Kayn nodded as she stepped forward, cupped his cheeks gently in each of her hands and asserted, “You told me a long time ago that all you needed was for me to say these words.” She pressed her lips against his, pulled away and whispered, “I want you. I wanted you long before I should have.” The elevator opened before he had the chance to respond, revealing a wide luxurious hardwood hallway.

Frost stepped out of the elevator, looked back at her and held out his hand. His eyes overflowed with emotion as he said, “Let’s go.”

There were only two doors and one of them had a gold toned plaque on the door that read, “Honeymoon suite.” Frost swiped the key card and blocked her from entering the room as she attempted to walk past him. What was he up to? Frost grinned as he chucked his bag into the room and it slid across the floor. He grabbed hers right out of her hand and tossed it inside. He gallantly swooped her up into his arms and carried her over the threshold. It was just as she’d always fantasized until he accidentally clipped her head on the door and it smarted. A romantic gesture followed by a concussion, seemed like a normal expectation in her accident-prone existence. She giggled as he kicked the door closed and carried her towards a king-sized canopy bed. He hadn’t even noticed she’d hit her head. Frost attempted to gently place her on the bed but tripped over one of their bags and dropped her on it. She bounced around, laughing. His attempt at a serious expression while being chivalrous faltered because he’d dropped her like she was a sack of potatoes.

Frost winced and chuckled, “I’m so glad you have that wacky sense of humor. I’m sorry I dropped you. I tried. I really did.”

Kayn stretched out on the silky bedding and smiled up at him. The way he’d worded it sounded like he was saying he’d dropped her on purpose. She started to giggle again. He was trying. That was more than obvious.

As Frost walked across the room he spoke, “I know we could both use some champagne but there’s something I need to do first.”

Kayn winced and touched her head while his back was to her. That would have left a nasty goose egg if she’d been mortal. She watched him sprinkling salt and placing stones around the room. He uttered a familiar phrase in Greek and she smiled, knowing what he was doing. Frost didn’t want anyone to hear them. He strolled back over to the small table with the bottle of champagne and poured two glasses. Kayn glanced around the room. He’d truly outdone himself. One of the walls was completely made of glass and there was an enormous bathtub and a fireplace. She was sprawled out on a gorgeous king-sized canopy bed with silky sheets. The room was incredible. He turned around with a glass of champagne in each hand and walked towards her. She sat up on the bed.

Frost smiled as he passed her a long thin wine flute and suggested, “We can order an early dinner if you’re hungry?”

He looked nervous. Kayn took a sip of the champagne that he’d passed her and placed it on the bedside table. He’d lost his cocky immortal exterior and in this scenario, he was just a boy that was nail bitingly nervous about taking her virginity. Frost remained standing beside the bed with the glass in his hand. Kayn got off the bed, took the glass out of his hand and placed it on the end table. She turned around and whispered, “I don’t need anything right now but you.” She bravely slipped her shirt off and tossed it onto the floor. Kayn stared into his eyes and smiled as she undid the top button of her jeans, slowly unzipping them on purpose. Frost exhaled deeply as she slid the material over each of her rounded hips. He continued to stare at her appreciatively as she seductively stepped out of them and sort of awkwardly kicked them aside because her foot got stuck. That had almost been sexy. She was about to walk towards him, when the expression on his face stopped her cold. He was afraid. What could he possibly have to fear? He snapped out of it and began his part of the strip tease. Frost undid the buttons of his shirt, exposing his glorious chiseled abs. Her lips parted. She bit her bottom lip in anticipation. This was happening. While watching her reaction, he regained his sexy cocky demeanor. Frost smirked as he tossed his shirt on the floor. He licked his bottom lip as he reached down to unbutton his jeans. She couldn’t tear her eyes away as his pants dropped to his ankles. He smoothly kicked them away and smiled at her. He was wearing form fitting blue sporty looking briefs. They were just a touch longer than shorts and they left very little to the imagination. She tried to maintain eye contact but her eyes kept darting to the one part of him she’d never laid eyes on. His bulge was visible. He was clearly excited. Frost grinned as he moved closer and ran his hands seductively from her shoulders down the length of her arms. She shivered as every nerve ending lit up. What was he doing? He stopped at her wrists and began to sensually massage her pulse points with his thumbs. He drove her wild when he did this. She gasped as the skin beneath his thumbs heated and her heart raced again.

Frost smiled as he whispered, “Women have an amazing number of sensual places to stimulate. He lifted both of her wrists to his lips and his eyes glinted deviously as he tenderly kissed the delicate flesh of each pulse point. She was aching with need as he lowered her wrists from his lips. He continued his slow naughty seduction as he whispered, “There’s also one behind a woman’s ears.” Without breaking contact with her tingling flesh, he slid his fingertips slowly up the length of each of her arms to her neck where he paused and felt for her pulse point. She thought he was about to kiss her as he moved closer but he left her with parted lips. He nuzzled her neck as he whispered in her ear, “Do you trust me?”

  Sometimes.

He grinned at her inner commentary as his fingertips travelled up her jawline to her ears. He skillfully caressed her lobes between two fingers on either side and then slid his talented fingers to where her ears joined with bone. Kayn shivered as goosebumps peaked on her arms. He gently rhythmically touched her there until her lips parted as an intense wave of pleasure overcame her and she gasped as a single tear of ecstasy trickled down her cheek. Her knees buckled. He caught her, swept her up into his arms and placed her gently on the bed. She nervously squirmed up the matt
ress until her head was resting on a pillow anticipating what came next. Frost grinned as he kissed her ankle and joined her on the bed, feathering naughty little kisses up her legs until he reached her panties where he hovered above there with the heat of his breath between her legs but kept going, slowly climbing up the length of her until his eyes met hers. She could feel the pressure of his manhood straining against her. Only a thin layer of material stood between her and what she was desperately aching for. She reached for him.

He stopped her and looked into her eyes as he confessed, “It’s not time for that sweet heart. If we don’t go slowly, I might lose control.”

He was afraid he’d lose control of his ability. She understood that feeling but didn’t care. She wanted it to happen.

Frost sensually trailed erotic kisses down to her abdomen. He sat up. What was he up to? He shot her a devious smile as he hovered both of his hands just a hair above the flesh of her abdomen without even grazing her silky skin. The whole area began to heat. Her body began to both tingle and pleasurably ache. Kayn felt an intense sensation building within her and she began to squirm beneath him. He held her in place with his muscular thighs and the weight of his body as he seductively questioned, “Are you ready?” She moaned aloud in reaction to the intensity of the carnal pleasure he was creating within her. She arched her back in response as his deviously magical hands made contact with her tingling flesh. He whispered, “Give in…let go.”

Kayn clutched the covers on either side of her as she experienced a mind-blowing explosion from within. Her back arched as she cried out, each time a soul altering wave of intense pleasure rippled through her. After the waves of carnal bliss had ceased, she laid still with her eyes closed unable to even think. Kayn covered her mouth with her hand, still in awe of what he’d done to her with only a touch. When she opened her eyes, Frost was watching her. His eyes had become a haunting shade of pale green. He’d obviously received pleasure from giving it to her by using his ability. She wanted him right now. No more games. He grinned and hovered his hands above her ankles creating an intense wave of pleasure, it began to travel up both of her legs at once. He grasped both ankles and as he touched her skin another tsunami of soul altering ecstasy overcame her. She cried out, clutched the sheets and sobbed his name while writhing around on the mattress. Once again, temporarily blinded by the carnal gratification he’d given her with only his touch, she remained still in the aftermath. A shot of adrenaline pulsed through her being and her own ability had been triggered. She made eye contact with him, knowing he had more deviously sinful party tricks up his sleeve. There was an obvious way to force his hand and she needed energy. Kayn motioned for him to come closer with one finger.
