Serenity's Dark Beauty

by J. R. Mitchell

"No!” She screamed realizing what Serenity was about to do. “I won't let you do it!” In a flash Erika was off the ground. Phillip got up to stop her but before he could do anything Erika was suddenly flung against a tree in a blinding flash of gold light. Serenity didn't know how she had done it. Her anger at Erika had just built up and when she raised her hand, the huntress went flying.

"How are you doing that?” Phillip asked in shock as he watched his mother struggle against the invisible force that held her to the tree three foot in the air.

"It is the magic that Lilith possessed. It has been passed down to Serenity.” Maverick's words made Serenity flinch. She dropped her hand and Erika fell to the ground hard. Phillip went to check on his mother. Serenity didn't care if the woman was alright. She put her bleeding wrist to Garret's lips. Leaving it there, she let her life force seep into his mouth. At first there was no reaction. Serenity was afraid that the fight with Erika had cost too much time. She was about to take her hand away when he swallowed. She leaned down to him in relief and kissed his forehead.

"Enough.” Maverick instructed when she started to fall forward. She had almost given too much. It only took a moment for her to get her wits back. Removing her wrist from his mouth, Serenity bent down and kissed Garret. She was relieved when he returned the kiss.

"How do you feel?” She asked.

"Amazing!” Was his reply. She remembered what it was like when she first turned. How everything seemed new and wonderful. The feel of power within her. Amazing could not describe it all.

Garret looked around in wonder before his eyes met hers again.

"You are so beautiful. Even more so than before. It is like my human eyes could not see you as clearly.” It was in that instant they became lost in each other's eyes that she felt it. The connection. She knew then that she could never be parted from him. She would die first. She could sense him. All of him, his feelings, his presence, everything. It was as if they had become part of each other. His green eyes turned gold and she recognized in them all that she was feeling. It was as if they had become one.

"They are mated.” Maverick's voice was satisfied. He acted as if this had been his ultimate goal all along. The world to Serenity was absolutely perfect. Like nothing could break the wonder of this spell. Then something did. It was a horrible shriek. It was Erika.

"No!" She screamed. Her eyes had a look of insanity in them. Serenity and Garret stood up gracefully. His wounds were healed. Both the arrow hole and the bite marks were gone. “You killed him!” She was starring at Serenity.

"She saved me mother!” Garret retorted. “You killed me!” He was stating it as a fact. As if it had happened to someone else. Like he didn't really care.

"Do not call me mother! You are not my son!” Erika's voice was low and dangerous.

"You are a demon that posses his body! My son is dead!"

"Mom! This is still Garret.” Phillip tried to reason with her. She refused to listen.

"If I am dead it is because you killed me!"

"Serenity killed Garret.” Erika shrieked. “She killed him when she fed him her tainted blood! Her poison blood! You are not my son!” Serenity watched silently. She didn't care what Erika thought and she could sense Garret didn't either. He was alive, no matter what Erika believed, and that was all that mattered to Serenity. Maverick, when she glanced back, had already disappeared into the night, as was his custom.

Erika was crying now, mourning the loss of her son. Phillip seemed to have accepted that his brother was a vampire. From the way he tossed his stake aside, she guessed he was retiring from vampire hunting. Garret stood calmly watching his mother. He held Serenity's hand tightly in his own.

"We are leaving, Erika.” His voice held no emotion.

"Good!” She yelled, facing what she thought were monsters, unafraid. “I will allow you to go for now, out of respect for Garret's death. But should I ever see either of you again, I will do everything humanly possible to kill you both!"

"And if I ever find you hunting us again.” Garret replied. “Then I will rip out your still beating heart to drink from it.” Erika stared at him, her tears had stopped and been replaced by fury.

"Leave.” She whispered, trying to keep her voice under control. Phillip watched on with silent shock. His family had been torn apart right before his eyes. Serenity hoped he wouldn't blame her.

"Goodbye mother.” Garret started to lead Serenity into the woods his snide, biting remark not lost on Erika, but Serenity stopped.

"I win.” Her voice held satisfaction. She had finally gotten some of the vengeance on her tormentor. Vengeance she had longed for every night since she was a child. Erika seemed barely able to control herself as Serenity flashed her an evil smile. Then Serenity and Garret used their vampire powers to slip away silently into the darkness.
