Kylie felt all of the air leave her body as Aunt Tricey continued to choke her to the brink of passing out. She had no choice, but to let Alissa go. When Kylie released her, Alissa punched her in the face so hard blood squirted all over the floor. Aunt Tricey let Kylie go just as she was about to pass out, leaving her gasping for air and holding her bloody nose.
“Bitch pulled out my hair!” Alissa yelled as she slapped Kylie repeatedly and Aunt Tricey held her arms.
Kylie stared at them both with hate as blood dripped from her mouth and the gash over her right eye. Although Alissa kept hitting her in the face and head, Kylie felt nothing. Her rage had numbed her inside and out, just like her legs.
“Fuck yo hair, bald-headed bitch, and fuck yo fat ass too!” Kylie yelled at Aunt Tricey spitting a wad of blood and saliva into her face.
The look on Aunt Tricey’s face was priceless as she stood there dumbfounded with Kylie’s blood and spit dripping down her face. She then let out a wicked laugh at the sight of Aunt Tricey standing there looking stupid. Kylie almost enjoyed her victory until she heard Alissa say she had something for her. She turned to see Alissa run over to the table by the door and pick up the big, sewing shears that were sitting on it. Kylie tried to break her arms free from Aunt Tricey’s grip as Alissa rushed back over and began to cut big chunks of her long, silky, black hair.
Kylie could hear Brian going crazy behind her, trying to break free as Alissa continued to chop off her hair down to the scalp. Aunt Tricey and Alicia laughed as Alissa continued to cut Kylie’s hair and curse and slap her in between. Kylie just sat there consumed by her rage, holding all of the tears that wanted to break free inside. She refused to let her see how much she was hurting her even though her heart was broken.
A couple of seconds later Alissa finished her butcher, barber session and stood back to admire her work. She laughed at the huge patches she left in Kylie’s head as she grabbed a mirror to show Kylie her work. Kylie closed her eyes and turned her head, refusing to look at what Alissa had done to her.
“Bitch you better open your eyes and look at the Hollywood cut my granddaughter gave you,” Aunt Tricey said laughing as she quickly let Kylie’s hands go and put her back in the choke hold.
Kylie slowly opened her eyes and stared at the beaten, bruised, and now bald reflection of herself in the mirror. Kylie was so filled with anger she felt sick to her stomach as Alissa laughed and taunted her while holding the mirror.
“Ain’t so pretty now without yo hair, are you bitch? Ha! You getting exactly what yo uppity ass deserve!” Alissa yelled into Kylie’s face before spitting and slapping her again.
Kylie felt a fire burning inside of her as her rage surged forward. She head butted Aunt Tricey who was still choking her, so hard that she fell back on to the floor as blood squirted through her fingers. Alissa tried to dodge the right hook Kylie threw at her, but she was too slow. Kylie caught her right across the left temple, sending her flying back into the wall. Hysteria and anger surged through Kylie’s body as she pushed her chair forward and tried to bang Alissa’s head into the wall while cursing.
“Bitch..you can cut my hair, but I still look better than yo fat, sloppy ass!” Kylie yelled as she grabbed a handful of Alissa’s hair as she tried to get up.
Kylie drug Alissa backwards by her hair as she crawled and yelled for Kylie to let her go. Suddenly Kylie felt a huge hand on her back as Aunt Tricey used her to get to her feet. Kylie could feel Aunt Tricey’s blood drip down her back as she stood over her. Kylie held on to Alissa’s hair as she looked back and saw Aunt Tricey pick up the lamp off the table. The next thing Kylie heard was the sound of the porcelain lamp rip through the air followed by the searing pain of it crashing across the back of her head. After that, darkness took her again as the blow made her pass out.
Chapter 10
When Kylie woke up a few hours later the pain in the back of her head was overwhelming. She opened her eyes slowly and peered around the dark, cramped closet she was locked in. Fear and anger ran through her body as she rolled forward and tried the knob, realizing it was locked from the outside. She was trapped in darkness once again with only her anger and plot for revenge to keep her company.
Suddenly, Kylie could hear her mother telling her to be strong and she knew that she wasn’t alone. She knew that it was Lakea who had given her the strength to fight back. Her mother had never left her. Even in her darkest times she could still feel the warmth of her mother’s love and her mother’s determination willing her to stay strong.
“I’m strong mama, they can’t hurt me anymore. I’m going to make it out and I’m going to make them pay,” Kylie said as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep with thoughts of revenge playing in her mind.
Kylie was awakened before dawn the next morning by Aunt Tricey as she snatched the closet door open, yelling. Kylie squinted her eyes at the light and covered her face with her hands.
“Wake yo ass up. That funky ass nurse may be coming today, so I want you to clean yoself up and I might feed you. I don’t want no trouble out of you today wanch,” Aunt Tricey said as she stared at Kylie as she wheeled herself pass.
Inside the bathroom Kylie looked at her face in the hand mirror on the sink and saw the dried blood and cuts all over her. She replaced the fear and anxiety she felt inside with malignity. She couldn’t even think about the pain all over her body as her mind went over scenarios of killing Aunt Tricey and the others. Kylie quickly wiped all of the blood off of her face and put on the clean blue t-shirt that was hanging on the towel rack. She looked at herself in the mirror once more before opening up the bathroom door and wheeling herself out into the hall.
Kylie felt as if someone was watching her as she wheeled herself into the kitchen and stopped at the table in front of the sticky, gross looking oatmeal Aunt Tricey had made for her. Just then she heard someone whistle behind her and turned to look right into the lustful, hateful face of Derrik, Alicia’s boyfriend. He stood there in his dingy white boxers scratching his groin as he stared at Kylie. She rolled her eyes at him and quickly turned her chair to face him. She knew not to trust him with her back turned.
“Ohhhh look who’s back, the princess. Where you been princess and what happened to yo hair? Somebody fucked you up,” Derrik said laughing as Kylie tried to choke down the gross oatmeal that tasted like snot.
She glared hatefully at Derrik as he went over to the refrigerator and drank straight out of the milk carton while staring at her. Kylie hated Derrik just as much as she hated Aunt Tricey and Alicia. She wanted him dead just as bad and soon she would have a good reason to.
Derrik put the milk carton back into the refrigerator and then went over to the table to stand over Kylie. She could feel his breath on her neck as he leaned down and deeply inhaled her scent.
“Yea, somebody fucked you up, but you still fine to me though. I’d fuck ya...better yet I will fuck ya. Just wait princess,” Derrik whispered in Kylie’s ear, grazing her neck with his lips and sending a jolt of anger through her body.
Kylie quickly backed her chair up, slamming into Derrik’s leg causing him to yell out in pain. Aunt Tricey walked into the kitchen just as Derrik was about to slap the fuck out of Kylie and stopped him.
“Don’t hit her in the face anymore, the nurse coming. I’ll get her for you,” Aunt Tricey said as she wobbled over to the table and threw the entire bowl of the snot flavored oatmeal Kylie was eating into the garbage.
Kylie just stared at her and then looked at Derrik and rolled her eyes as he walked out of the room laughing.
“Ima get you princess!” Derrik yelled as he walked down the hallway still laughing.
Kylie felt her stomach churn as she thought about his disgusting ass touching her. Aunt Tricey laughed as she watched the expression on Kylie’s face.
“I told yo ass to not cause trouble and look at you. Just wait til’ the bitch leave. I may just give you to Derrik. He’ll teach yo ass a lesson. You ain’t got no feeling bel
ow yo waist, huh? I bet he can make you feel something,” Aunt Tricey said as she pushed Kylie into the living room next to her bed.
“Now Ima put yo ugly ass in this bed, but bitch if you try anything I will drop you and stomp you until I don’t see you moving anymore,” Aunt Tricey said as she yanked Kylie up out of her chair and threw her in the bed.
Kylie looked at Aunt Tricey with malice as she flung her legs into the bed and sat it up into a sitting position. Kylie looked out of the open window, staring at the beautiful birds flying by as Aunt Tricey continued to curse and rant, walking back and forth from the kitchen to the living room. Kylie totally tuned Aunt Tricey out as she concentrated on her legs and getting them to move. Kylie used all of her might to try and get her legs to move just an inch, but it was no use. She fell back on her pillow exhausted after trying to move her leg several times. The pain in her back was unbearable, but Kylie didn’t complain. Seconds later, Aunt Tricey got up and brought over a small, white pill and ordered Kylie to open her mouth.
Kylie swallowed the pill down with her spit as she stared up at Aunt Tricey and smiled. Aunt Tricey blinked her eyes rapidly and looked at Kylie with a bewildered expression on her face before wobbling back over to her chair. Kylie laughed at the thought of running Aunt Tricey away as she stared back out of the window at the world moving outside. She wanted so bad to get back into the world and not be a prisoner or in pain anymore. After a couple of minutes, Kylie began to feel a calm, warm, and tingly feeling creep through her body. She felt light headed and dizzy as the pill Aunt Tricey had given her began to consume her and make her feel high.
“Yeah that tab kicked in, huh? I gave yo lil’ ass a ten just so I’d know you gonna be cool when this bitch get here. Now remember what I said,” Aunt Tricey said to Kylie before going back to sit in her chair.
Kylie tried to stay awake, but the drugs in her body put her in a haze that she couldn’t break. She drifted in and out of consciousness, barely able to keep her eyes open as she heard the nurse enter the house. Soon Aunt Tricey was gone off to the kitchen, leaving Kylie with the nurse.
“Hi Kylie, my name is Rochele and I am going to be your nurse for a while,” Rochele said as she sat her purse, bag, and clipboard down before turning on the light.
When Rochele turned on the light and saw Kylie’s face and hair she gasped out loud and immediately began to ask questions.
“Kylie, what happened to you? Who cut your hair and put those bruises on your face?” Rochele asked as she grabbed Kylie’s hand.
Kylie tried hard to concentrate as her eyes fluttered open and shut and she felt as if she were floating on a cloud.
“Kylie, are you alright? What did they give you?” Rochele asked as she ran over to the table and began reading the labels on the bottles.
Kylie could see the panic on Rochele’s face as she turned her head slowly to fully look at the nurse.
“She said she gave me a tab so I couldn’t tell,” Kylie said in a voice barely above a whisper as she tried to fight the drug-induced haze she was in.
Rochele ran back over to Kylie’s bed and kneeled down to talk to her with tears in her eyes. She felt so sorry for Kylie as she stared at her looking drugged out with patches in her head and bruises all over her face. Rochele wanted to help Kylie just like her sister tried, but she couldn’t understand why CPS hadn’t been there yet.
“Tell me what happened Kylie. Do they beat you?” Rochele asked as she grabbed her pad and pen and sat next to Kylie.
Kylie began telling Rochele all of the things she had endured at the hands of Aunt Tricey as she wrote down everything she said. When Kylie finished talking tears were streaming down her face as anger over those memories filled her body. Rochele stared at her with tears in her eyes before taking out her camera and taking pictures of her hair and the bruises. Kylie felt a fleeting sense of relief after telling someone everything that had happened to her. However, her relief would not last long.
“I will help you Kylie. I’m going to call the police when I go get my cell phone and I’ll give them these notes and the pictures. I promise your pain is about to end. I can’t understand why anyone hasn’t already helped you,” Rochele said as she grabbed her keys and prepared to go to her car.
“She knows everyone and has friends everywhere. No one will do anything to her. I have to do it myself,” Kylie said to Rochele as she stood with her hand on the door.
Rochele looked back at Kylie with a self-assured look as a tear fell from her eye.
“I will help you, watch. They have to listen and pay attention when they see these pictures,” Rochele said as she quietly opened the door and slipped out to her car.
Kylie let her head fall against the pillow and closed her eyes as the room began to spin. She was suddenly so dizzy and tired she couldn’t even turn to see who had entered the room until she heard Aunt Tricey cough. Kylie slowly turned her head and tried to focus her eyes enough to see what Aunt Tricey was doing, but her vision was so blurry. All she could see was a big blob of purple standing by the nurse’s purse and then it quickly disappeared back into the hall. Seconds later, Rochele was back inside of the house holding Kylie’s hand trying to get her to wake up.
“Kylie open your eyes,” Rochele said shaking Kylie as Aunt Tricey walked into the room with the police following her.
Suddenly, Kylie could feel Rochele release her as the police yelled for her to put her hands up and step away from the child. Kylie tried to open her eyes and speak as the police came over and grabbed Rochele by her wrist, but everything began to spin again. She could barely hear the things going on around her as the tab she had taken sent waves of euphoria through her body.
“See officer I told you she was abusing my niece. That’s why I had to sneak you in the back door, I knew we’d catch ha. She stole my money and jewelry too,” Aunt Tricey yelled as the officer handcuffed Rochele and she pleaded and cried.
Rochele tried to explain to the officer what was really going on, but he didn’t want to hear anything she had to say. He was one of the many police officers Aunt Tricey had under her thumb from back in the day when she sold dope. All he needed to hear was what Aunt Tricey had said and then seeing Rochele with her hands on Kylie made it no better. The officer handcuffed Rochele and ordered her to lay on the floor and be quiet as he searched her purse to find the $600 Aunt Tricey planted, but said she stole along with all of Kylie’s jewelry Aunt Tricey had taken.
Kylie tried to stop the police as she slowly opened her eyes and began to yell, but all that came out was gibberish. The last thing Kylie saw before she passed out was Rochele being drug out of the house by the police as she yelled her name. After that Kylie fell into a deep sleep, haunted by her memories.
The shock from a bucket of cold water hitting Kylie’s face woke her up and made her shiver as she stared up into Alicia’s face. Kylie looked towards the window and noticed that it was now night and she had slept the entire day away. Kylie felt pain in her neck and head as she tried to pull herself into a sitting position in the bed. Her stomach churned and she felt as if she would vomit as Alicia cursed, blowing her bad breath in her face.
“Wake yo ass up invalid. I heard what yo funky ass did today, telling that bitch all those lies. So we torture you bitch? We torture you? You haven’t seen torture yet,” Alicia said as she puffed the Newport 100 hanging from her lips.
Kylie looked around the room as Alicia pulled back the covers on her bed and stared down at her in disgust. She saw Aunt Tricey sitting in her usual spot, smirking at what Alicia was about to do. Panic and anger filled Kylie once again as she watched Alicia puff the cigarette until the fire on it was long and pointed. Kylie’s heart beat fast as she watched Alicia stick the cigarette to her leg and it sizzled as it seared her skin. Although Kylie couldn’t feel the pain, she could smell her flesh burning as Alicia went up her legs, touching each spot she passed with the fire from the cigarette.
“Brian help me!” Kylie yelled as she swatted at Alicia
’s hand, trying to knock the cigarette away. She just moved it to the other hand and burned Kylie’s arm.
“Brian can’t help you bitch. He can’t even help himself. I sent his ass back to that looney hospital since his pussy ass wanted to turn on me for you. Now, you’re all alone and we can do what we want to you,” Alicia said burning Kylie on the other arm.
Kylie yelled out in pain as Alicia held the cigarette to her arm, pushing the fire deeper into her skin. Kylie had to hold her breath and bite her bottom lip to keep her screams in. She closed her eyes as tears escaped from their corners and she tried to focus her mind on ignoring the pain. For several minutes Alicia burned Kylie and smacked her while telling her how she was worthless. Kylie ignored her words and thought about how good it would feel to see her die.
After thirty minutes of burning, beating, and cursing Kylie out, Alicia grew tired because she couldn’t get Kylie to cry or beg. She sat down in the chair next to her mother defeated as she glared at Kylie. Kylie stared at the burns on her arms and legs in disgust before turning towards Alicia and Aunt Tricey. She hated them for all of the pain they put her through. She couldn’t hide her feelings as she began to yell and punch the bed.
