His eyes were a bit bloodshot and red-rimmed, and if I didn’t know better, I would have thought that he’d been crying. He stepped beside me, his expression both weary and sad. “I’m sorry about what happened to you.”
I nodded. “I’m just glad it’s over.”
He averted his gaze to the flowers in his arms. “Back when I was in school, Latin was a requirement. I thought I’d forgotten all of it, but one line came back to me when I was in the floral shop, getting these for you.” He sighed, searched my eyes, and said, “‘Saepe creat molles aspera spina rosas.’ I believe it means that the sharpest of thorns can often produce the gentlest of roses.” Dad handed me the bouquet, then put his palm on my cheek and said quietly, “You’re my rose, and I am so proud of you, Molly.”
For once, I was struck speechless. I set the bouquet on a nearby table and hugged my father in silence.

Leslie O’Kane also writes under the pseudonym of Leslie Caine. She considers the incident in which she was taken hostage to be the start of her “life in crime.” When the robber clobbered her with a shotgun to make her stop laughing, she learned that a sense of humor can be dangerous.
