Second, you need to realize that Spirit speaks to you in whatever manner suits you best. For example, I talked about automatic writing earlier. That’s one of the easiest ways for me to connect to Spirit, and I think it’s because I’m open to it. I’m a word person, so I like to see scribbles on the page. Some people are spiritually drawn to sounds, so listening to or making music will forge a connection to Spirit. It opens their soul and moves them, making them happy and raising their frequency. Others are more attuned to visuals and symbols, so Spirit will communicate with them through images. Spirit may send them flashes of things that they pass off as coincidence—like repeating numbers moving through their minds or people around them saying the same phrases again and again. There is no such thing as coincidence; it’s simply Spirit creating synchronicity. It’s Source’s first and foremost way to grab your attention.
Everyone has a method through which Spirit can reach them, but many people don’t trust the messages. They’ll hear or see a sign—like the aforementioned repeated numbers, feathers falling from the sky, coins scattered on the ground, or their deceased parents’ voices passing through their minds, all undeniably from Spirit—and chalk them up to instinct or coincidence. I want to run up and grab them and say, “No, it’s not! It’s Spirit!”
Mediums will tell you the exact same thing. When I’ve asked medium friends how they speak to the dead, their answer is always simply “I just let it in.” You must trust the connection. If you ask a question of Spirit, you will get an answer. That’s how Source works, and that’s what you need to look for—in whatever form is meant for you.
You might not actually see a dead relative, get an answer to a burning question, or receive step-by-step instructions, but Spirit will reveal the person or the answer to you nonetheless. The minute you get a sign, you have to go with it, even if on the surface it makes no sense at all.
For example, once during an exorcism I was so connected to Spirit that I got a visual of a jar of honey. For a split second I was tempted to ask, “Why the hell would a jar of honey pop into my head?” But I verbalized what I’d seen, and my client responded accordingly. “Oh, yes, honey! My grandfather used to keep bees.” Her grandfather was trying to communicate with her through me. Spirit sent a signal—a visual of honey—to represent that.
Some people are just born less connected than others, so learning to commune with Spirit and tap into an extrasensory ability might prove to be more of a challenge. Such was the case with a recent client.
As I said, I’ve never met anyone else who fully acknowledges that they can see entities. I’ve always suspected that someone else like me is out there, but so far I haven’t shaken hands with them. Recently, however, a famous young actor—whom I’ll call Mr. Celebrity—came to my Spirit Room for an exorcism, and I was blown away by how similar his energy signature was to mine.
“I’ve been able to manipulate my own energy since I was a kid,” he said.
Oh my God, so have I! I thought.
“And I think sometimes I see and feel things, but I’m not sure.”
Like . . . ?
“But then I got famous so young, so fast, that I put it out of my mind. I thought doing drugs would suppress it, but they only make me sense things more.” He paused. “What do you think is happening to me? Is there something else out there?”
I wanted to jump up, grab him by the shoulders, and beg him to tell me he could see entities just like me. But that’s not my place. Like any person grappling with their connection to Spirit, he needed to discover it himself—if indeed he has that ability at all.
Mr. Celebrity had a few garden-variety Clives that I was able to remove without any problem, and he left my Spirit Room saying he felt much better. Then a few days later, he called me.
“Rachel,” he said, “I need to tell you that I’ve been sensing certain energies and a lot more since my exorcism. Like I did when I took drugs, but more clearly. These feelings, these images, make sense to me. I don’t want to block them out.”
“That’s good,” I responded. “Let’s reconnect because I want to show you how to harness that.”
I haven’t seen Mr. Celebrity again, but I hope I will. I think that, like me, he has a gift that he can use for good, but he has to dedicate himself to the work. He needs to acknowledge his gift, embrace it, and use Spirit to comprehend it.
I’m sure I can be of assistance. If he came back to see me, I’d open him up to his gift by helping him master the fundamentals. First, I’d teach him about recognizing frequency. I’d use the energy trick I mentioned earlier in the book, where you hold a rock in your hand, then feel its frequency shift. Then I’d teach him about earth energy by taking him to a place where something awful happened; a spot that was particularly low frequency. There, I’d guide him through how to sense the earth’s vibration. These exercises sound so simplistic, but they ease a person into connecting with Spirit, which is a gradual process. It’s like a weak muscle that you have to exercise to make stronger. But when you practice, you open yourself up and start listening to Spirit, and then everything changes.
Just like me, many of my clients have had issues with their mothers. Often, these buried feelings bubble to the surface during their exorcisms. Even if someone loves their mom dearly, and even if she’s still alive, she may haunt them—literally or metaphorically. My client Daniel Knauf, a television writer and producer, didn’t receive a visitation from his deceased mother’s spirit during his exorcism, but he did get symbols and visions about her. His experience isn’t just fascinating; it’s also the perfect example of how sometimes Spirit sends messages in the most remarkable ways.
DAN
I consider myself an existentialist and experientialist. I really try to experience as many things as possible because it feeds my storytelling. I met Rachel through a mutual friend, and because I’d never before met an exorcist, I thought, This should be interesting. We got together to drink a bottle of wine, sat and chatted, and got to know each other. Then, I decided, You know what? Experientialist that I am, I think I’ll go through an exorcism. Let’s see what this is like. So I set up an appointment with Rachel for the following month.
Rachel took me into a little room in the back of her house and started the process. She didn’t make any incantations or anything; she just called on various saints and angels. I was lying on a bed with my eyes closed. Then, I started having very lucid hallucinations. At first, I saw a big, full moon, and immediately the feeling that came to mind was about my mother. I began to see what looked like a piece of rotting wood or log that was on the ground in the forest. It was infested with black pill bugs. I could hear them talking to each other in a sort of chattering sound. It was a kind of communication. Then all of a sudden, I witnessed what appeared to be an antigravity ray, and the bugs were pulled up and out of this log. The sensation I had was like stitches being removed—like someone was pulling thread out of my chest. It was all very vivid, and I kept thinking, These are things that are in me, and they have something to do with my mom.
I was in a chaotic place in my life. I’d had a marriage collapse after 32 years. I hadn’t been single since I was 21 years old, yet, all of a sudden, I’d been thrust into the dating world. I was also dealing with the fact that both my parents had died three and five years before that. Suddenly, I was an orphan, and I was adrift. I had trouble interpreting why I felt that way, and why it was so tied to Mom.
Since my exorcism, I’ve turned my thoughts to my mother. Something told me, “You’ve got to think about your mom a little bit,” and so I realized my mother’s role in who I was attracted to. My father had left my mom when I was twelve and I’d been thrown into being the man of the house. I wasn’t psychologically prepared for that. Later, I got into a pattern of finding women who I rescued. I was responsible for them—just like I’d been with Mom.
My exorcism helped settle me. It made me focus on getting involved with people who weren’t black holes of crazy need. The women I’v
e since gotten involved with have even helped that process along.
CHAPTER 15
Home Ex-Onomics
Now that I’ve explored some psychological and emotional strategies that help raise frequency and get you closer to Spirit, let’s turn to some easy, at-home approaches. Entities are especially active in our homes—our sanctuaries, where we spend our most private moments—so please take to heart how important it is to fight them there. Luckily, doing so is not difficult. The simple things I describe in this chapter may alter your energy just enough to prevent a dangerous attachment.
Herbs, Minerals, and Resins That Keep the Entities at Bay
Plants, minerals, and resins are well known to have many powerful healing qualities. This is also true when it comes to raising your frequency. Burning them can easily increase the good energy in your environment. They smell good, they change the atmosphere of the room, and entities hate them. You may have heard about the “cleansing” properties of burning sage, but there are many herbs that go far beyond sage.
When a client comes in for an exorcism, I read their energy and tailor my recipes accordingly. Perfecting my blends has been a process; I’ve learned how to do it through trial and error and communing with Spirit. Since most of my exorcisms are, thankfully, for low-level entities like Clives, I blend herbs and resins that I’m comfortable recommending for you to use at home. Sometimes, however, herbs like these just aren’t strong enough to battle a particularly malicious entity like a Trickster. I need to blend something so powerful that, when I burn it, it’s like an atom bomb going off in the room. These include:
Wolfsbane: A purple, poisonous flowering plant that’s frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic healing practices. It usually comes as a dried root and is available online or in apothecary shops. Be careful, though! It’s highly poisonous.
Hemlock: This is the lacy, triangular plant that’s famous for killing Socrates. He drank it in a potion, but I burn a powder that’s made of the plant’s dried leaves and berries. The odor is musty, and while some people find it a little off-putting, I love it.
Blue lotus: This is a gorgeous water lily that has a sedative effect that’s so powerful it’s considered a class 1 drug in some countries. Like hemlock, it’s available in liquid form, but you can buy it as a powder, or as a chunky mixture of crushed flowers.
I love all of these plants; not only do they smell absolutely divine when you’re burning them (especially blue lotus, which is used in a lot of perfumes), but they create a fantastic aura in the room that relaxes my clients and scares their entities.
Unfortunately, all of them are highly poisonous, so I use them only when necessary. Some people believe that these drugs cause hallucinations, but that’s not actually true. They just should not be employed unless the situation really warrants it—and even then I let my clients be the final judge of whether they are comfortable. I’ve spent years researching their properties, I’m meticulous about using them in small, precise amounts, and I always properly ventilate my Spirit Room. Using them in your home without proper training isn’t advised. If you go too far with them, you risk poisoning yourself, which may involve a lot of incredibly unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, disorientation, or worse.
Some of my favorite, nontoxic minerals, plants, and resins—all of which you can burn at home—are easy to find online or in metaphysical stores. I can’t promise that burning them will actually rid your body of entities—the demons are usually too deeply rooted to the darkness or trauma inside you—but doing so will certainly prevent others from coming in, and can also help raise your frequency.
Frankincense: The Christian church frequently uses this in exorcisms. I love it because it raises the frequency of the room, quickly. Not everyone loves the smell—it’s a little heavy and very masculine—but everyone responds to it. You typically find frankincense as an essential oil, which can be burned, but I like to use the dry resin.
Copal: This is a tree resin from the copal tree. The Mayans and the indigenous people of Mexico and Central America used this throughout their history as an incense, and it can often be found in religious or communal ceremonies. When it burns, copal smells very clean, and that’s exactly what it does. It is excellent at clearing the air, and entities are absolutely repelled by it. I prefer copal resin sticks, which a lot of Spanish bodegas carry. You can also buy loose copal resin, which are little stones that look similar to amber. Copal comes in black and white, and it honestly doesn’t matter which color you use. Burn it several times a day throughout your house, in whatever form you prefer. You can also choose to burn it at night, when entities like Tricksters or the Sandman may be circulating.
Sulfur (ALSO CALLED Brimstone): Before you rush out and buy this, just know that sulfur does not smell good. A lot of people have sensitivities to sulfur, in fact—it makes them feel nauseated, or even vomit—so I’m always careful to ask a client if this is a problem before an exorcism. Sulfur’s a mineral, so you can crush it, or I buy incense discs (made of charcoal) and light the sulfur powder on one of them. Be sure to place the charcoal discs on something that’s burn-proof—like an ashtray or a small cauldron—because, obviously, you shouldn’t be burning a red-hot disc on a flammable surface.
Palo santo: This is wild tree native to Mexico and South America. Though the chips from this wood can’t really be crushed, palo santo is great for raising the vibration of a space. Just light the palo santo and allow the smoke to move through the room.
I typically blend herbs, minerals, and resins with a mortar and pestle, make them into powder, and then store them in jars. Obviously, you can keep your blends however and wherever you prefer, but I’ve found this is the easiest method for me.
When I burn my blends, I can sense the frequency in the room change right away. I just feel better immediately. When people with pets burn blends, they report that their animals act calmer, more relaxed, almost instantly. An aggressive dog might lie down in his bed and allow you to pet him for the first time in days. Or he may not react when the cat he usually growls at walks past him. Still, I recommend always opening your windows when you burn anything, lest you smoke yourself (or your pets) out!
Now for the nitty-gritty. The following are three blends that I use not only during exorcisms, but also when I want to raise the frequency of a room and that of the people in it. I promise you I haven’t recommended anything that’s going to 1) make your neighbors call the fire department, or 2) make your house smell like a yoga studio on steroids. When you burn these blends, your home won’t just smell good, but will make you and everyone in it (except for entities) feel good, too.
A few quick tips:
For all blends, you can use herbs or oils. If you choose oils, it’s best to use a diffuser, rather than a charcoal disc.
For loose herbs, use half a teaspoon of each, and for oils, use two to three drops of each.
Once the blends are made, dried herbs will stay fresh in a sealed glass jar, while glass dropper bottles are best for oils.
Most of these herbs can be ordered online, and, depending on where you live, can be found locally in greengrocers or metaphysical stores (places that sell crystals, tarot decks, Wiccan supplies, and more. Sometimes these are smaller sections inside holistic and herbal medicine stores). Some of these are spices you’d find in your kitchen (cinnamon, cumin, orange peel, etc.). If you’re in a real bind and only have the kitchen pantry items, the blends will still work—just a bit less effectively than when you have the entire recipe.
EXORCISM BLEND
Use this blend when you’re worried about personal attachments, specifically those related to entities. When you feel low, depressed, or anxious, this is a great recipe for dispelling as well as protecting your energy from possession.
Copal resin: Cleanses and purifies a space of negative energy
Black cohosh: For love, courage, and protection
Frankincense: Increases high vibration quickly
Sulfur (if not sulfur sensitive): This is a banishing agent for entities
Mullein: For protection against an entity that might be hovering in a space, but not attached at the time
Elderflower: For prosperity and instant health. It’s high vibrational and brings about joy
Solomon’s seal: For protection against hovering entities as well as low vibrational deceased people
Angelica root: For protection from entities. Also increases the effectiveness of the other herbs used
Juniper berries: For protection from accidents and physical harm associated with entities
RAISING THE VIBRATION OF A SPACE
Use this blend when something feels “off” in a space like your office or home. If there’s an energy you don’t recognize, a smell you don’t like, or if something in the air just doesn’t feel good, this is what you want to burn. This blend can effectively transmute the negative energy of a person who was in the space as well (a coworker, an ex, etc.), and can diminish old negative energies (imprints of deaths, fights, abuse, etc.).
Sage: For protection and clearing
Copal: For protection, increasing positive vibration, and cleansing
Frankincense: Purifies the atmosphere and increases emotional/physical health
Rose petals: These bring love energy into the space
Damask rose: Has a very powerful uplifting energy, associated with archangels
Cassia: Stimulates your own psychic abilities and creates energetic barriers
Lemon balm: For communion with goddess energy, this adds personal energy
Orange peel: To create joy energy
Dragon’s blood: This enhances and amplifies all of the above
MANIFESTING ABUNDANCE
This is a great blend to burn when your frequency feels high, and you’re ready to bring something positive into your life. Use it while meditating or to help intensify your focus on what you want to manifest. This blend will aid you in attracting what you desire while helping you gently release what no longer vibrates at your frequency.
