Krystal nodded, feeling dizzy from the happiness that filled her. “I do. I know it sounds crazy to feel so strongly for a guy I met so recently. Especially a guy who’s as stubborn and mischievous as you are. But I can’t help being a little crazy, when I’ve found someone as wonderful as you.”
“It’s not crazy,” Hugh said, leaning in to kiss her. “It’s love.”
When his lips touched hers, Krystal once again felt his fire filling her. She felt like they still had a lot to talk about—where they would live and how soon they should tell people they were together, and how the war would affect their relationship. But all she could do in that moment was melt into Hugh’s kiss. There would be time for talking later. Now was a time for action.
Hugh kissed her deeply and hungrily, just as you’d expect from a man who had been on the brink of death. Krystal felt his fire going through her whole body, and she was once again filled with an almost crazed desire for him. She had to have him, and she had to have him now. The last few days had been the strangest but best days of her life. She had learned to stand up for herself and for what she believed in, she had boldly given a presentation to the High Council, and she had fallen in love with a dragon.
What more could she ask for? She knew that wartime was not the best time to start a relationship, but she didn’t care anymore. She didn’t want to wait to start the rest of her life with Hugh.
Judging by how urgently he was kissing her, he didn’t want to wait, either. Krystal reached down to feel between his legs, pleased to find that he was already hard as a rock. When she touched him, he let out a low growl and pushed her backwards onto the couch. She let out a shriek of delight as she bounced slightly, and another shriek as he started pulling off her clothes.
He tugged at her shirt and bra, tearing them off and then reaching down to unbutton her jeans. Not to be outdone, she reached up to pull his shirt off as well. He was still wearing his Torch Lake military uniform, which wasn’t the easiest thing to get off. But she managed to pull at it until it came up and over his head. Then she moved on to his pants, even as he yanked at her underwear to pull it off. Their bodies were a blur of fabric, arms, and legs. Krystal felt Hugh’s thick muscles against her soft curves, and she thought in that moment that they were perfect for each other in every way. Being naked in his arms, skin against skin, was the happiest feeling in the world.
She could feel herself dripping wet between her legs, and she could already feel the pressure building within her core. Her body responded to his every touch—trembling, tingling, and becoming hotter and hotter from the desire that filled her. His body was responding to hers, too, she could tell. His stiff erection pushed against her thighs as he growled low and held her tighter. He was breathing heavily, hungry for her. The thought of being wanted by a dragon thrilled Krystal. She closed her eyes and drank in the sensation of his lips kissing her.
He moved from her mouth, to her neck, down to her breasts. He licked and chewed her nipples, teasing them into hard nubs and sucking so hard that she felt as though he was going to pull them right off. It was a sharp, intense pleasure, just short of painful. Krystal moaned again and again. She wondered, as she had the last time Hugh made love to her, how it was possible for her body to be this hot and not actually burst into flames.
Hugh took his time kissing her, moving from her breasts to her navel, and drawing little circles around her bellybutton with his tongue. Krystal giggled at the warm wetness, and Hugh only licked harder. He licked down to her legs then, tracing a line from her thighs to her calves to her ankles, and back up again. Krystal thought he was going to put his tongue inside her dripping wet entrance next, and she braced herself for the inevitable flood of sensations on her nerve endings.
But it was not his tongue that filled her. In the next moment, Hugh pushed himself up and forward so that his huge erection itself was right above her, and he slammed into her. The unexpectedness of this made Krystal gasp, and her eyes flew open. Above her, Hugh’s eyes were squeezed tightly shut as he concentrated on thrusting his hips against hers. Krystal realized with pure delight that he had just taken her, completely, unable to wait a moment longer to be inside of her.
And, oh, how wonderful he felt inside of her. He pushed against her inner walls, sending a cascade of tingling fire radiating across her body. With every thrust, Krystal felt the pressure and heat in her core increasing. She smiled as she felt the intense warmth, knowing now what it meant: the lifemate bond. She and Hugh were bound for life. She, a simple wizard who was still learning to have courage, had somehow captured the heart of a mighty dragon. Krystal felt like the luckiest woman alive.
Hugh moved in her faster and faster with each passing second. Each moment seemed to fill him with a greater urgency, and each of those urgent thrusts into Krystal brought her closer and closer to her breaking point. She squeezed her eyes shut as tightly as she could and allowed herself to drown in the sensation of him.
And then, drown she did, tumbling over the edge into her sweet, sweet release. As she gave in to the pleasure of Hugh within her, she felt her inner muscles clamping around his shaft. The spasms of pure, electric passion made her whole body pulse, and she felt as though it was impossible for any human to feel more wonderful than she felt in that moment.
Hugh followed close behind her, finding his release as well and pulsing into her. Together, they rode the waves, arms wrapped around each other as they once again solidified the lifemate bond between them. Their start had been unusual, with both of them on opposite sides of an important wartime issue. But they had found common ground where it mattered most: in matters of the heart.
In the arms of her dragon, Krystal felt more alive than she had in ages. This must be what it felt like to truly love and be loved.
Chapter Sixteen
Hugh tugged at the stiff fabric of his Torch Lake military dress uniform. He wasn’t the type to enjoy dressing up, but he did enjoy getting a pat on the back. And tonight was all about a giant pat on the back for both him and Krystal. Right now, he was standing next to Krystal in the stage spotlight at a giant military ball. Councilor Morgan was standing at the podium next to the Falcon Cross Commander who had been in charge of the mission Hugh had been on when Simon was rescued. Simon himself stood on the other side of Krystal, looking striking in his military dress uniform. A few weeks of good food had done wonders for Simon’s physique. These days he was looking like every bit the mighty dragon he was.
Hugh looked back up at Councilor Morgan and smiled as the Head Councilor continued to praise Hugh’s quick rescue of Simon. Before that, Councilor Morgan had spent quite a bit of time talking about how important Krystal had been to figuring out the problem with the City Guard. Hugh knew that in some ways this was all a big publicity stunt. The Torch Lake High Council believed strongly in continuously boosting public morale, so they liked to give awards and throw celebratory parties whenever they could. Hugh felt like perhaps this ball had been a little overdone. After all, it was wartime—perhaps not the best time to throw a big, expensive party. The money might have been better spent on military strikes. The High Council was willing to throw money into this type of thing though, even during a war. Perhaps especially during a war. They felt that a town of citizens with high morale was one of the best assets you could have during a war.
Hugh glanced over at Krystal, taking in her shimmering purple ball gown. It matched her sparkling purple magic ring, and brought out the deep green notes of her otherwise dark brown eyes. She looked stunning, and she was all his. Hugh leaned over and whispered in her ear.
“Want to get out of here and get a burger?”
She looked up at him with widened eyes. He knew what she was thinking: the ball included fancy food and plenty of drinks. Besides, they were way overdressed for a burger joint. But he also knew she wouldn’t turn him down. She was not the type to enjoy being the center of attention. She wouldn’t leave until they had played their dutiful part, picking at their fancy food and t
aking pictures with all of the important people here who wanted pictures with them. But she would leave, just as soon as they could plausibly escape without being noticed.
The audience broke into applause as Councilor Morgan finished his speech, and Simon leaned over to talk to both Krystal and Hugh.
“What are you two plotting?” the other dragon asked. “You both have a mischievous glint in your eyes.”
Hugh only shrugged, and Simon rolled his eyes at them. Simon had only been in Torch Lake a few weeks, but he already knew that Hugh topped the charts when it came to monkey business.
About an hour later, when the festivities of the ball were done, and all the photographs were taken, Hugh and Krystal slipped out the back door together. The burger joint they’d gone to on their first “date” was just down the road, and they ran to it, hand-in-hand and giggling the whole time. When they burst into the doorway, the guy behind the counter only rolled his eyes. He was used to seeing Hugh goofing off, and thought nothing of seeing Hugh come in dressed up with a girl in a ball gown on his arm.
Ten minutes later, Hugh and Krystal had crammed into that same booth they’d been in during their first meal here together. Krystal giggled as she took a big bite of her burger.
“This is so much better than the food at the ball. What was that even supposed to be? Some sort of chicken dish?”
Hugh laughed. “I guess. I never understand those fancy meals. It’s horribly small portions and they seem to care more about how pretty the food looks than how it actually tastes.”
Krystal laughed and nodded her head. “I’ll take a non-pretty burger any day. This is delicious.”
Hugh smiled at her. She looked even lovelier under the lights of the burger joint than she had in the ballroom. Her fiery spirit had only grown in the short time he had known her, and he couldn’t believe that she was his. He lowered his eyes at her, and said in a low voice, “You’re delicious.”
She rolled her eyes at him, but blushed happily. “Oh, behave yourself.”
He grinned. “That’s one thing I don’t know how to do. And you know you wouldn’t have it any other way.”
She grinned back at him. “No, I guess I wouldn’t.”
And neither would he. He took a big bite of his own burger and winked at her. War was rising, and hard times were upon all of the good shifters and wizards. But Hugh knew that he and Krystal would make it through.
Their mischievous adventures had only just begun.
