Inside Out: A Heather's Forge Cozy Mystery, Book 5 Page 13

by N. L. Cameron

  “What are we gonna do?”

“I don’t know about you,” he replied, “but I’m getting out of here. One armed stand-off, one mysterious release of a confessed killer, and one ultra-rich, ultra-powerful mastermind pulling strings behind the scenes is a little too much for me to stomach in one day.”

“You’re not just walking away from this case, are you?” I asked.

“I’m not walking away from anything. You and I are going home to regroup and formulate our strategy. We’re gonna crack this case if it’s the last thing we do.”

We walked out into the glaring sunshine. The world looked so different out here than it looked in the dark observation room. The town green shone grassy and inviting. No one would ever guess an armed man just got arrested out there after threatening three people’s lives.

I looked around at the quaint little town of Heather’s Forge. Someone with a finger on the pulse of national politics watched everything that went on in this town. Heather’s Forge might be miles from anywhere, but it wasn’t small enough to escape the machinations of power. Someone could still pull the strings to control what happened around this town and who knew where else?

I took Levi’s hand. “Are we going to walk all the way home?”

“Do you have anything better to do on a sunny afternoon?”

I sighed. I definitely didn’t have anything better to do on a sunny afternoon than to go for a walk through the countryside with him. He squeezed my hand, and we set off on the long road back to the Barrell Inn.
