  AUTHOR’S NOTE

Although this book is very much a work of fiction, Holy Island is real place and is located in a spectacular setting off the coast of Northumberland. Twice a day, it is separated from the mainland by a tidal causeway which lends itself to all manner of potential Agatha Christie-style mysteries. Beyond that genre, the local geography has provided the inspiration for numerous fantasy epics and it is steeped in a history which spans over a thousand years.

Nowadays, the island is inhabited by a warm and friendly community for whom the beauty of the landscape never gets old. It is worth mentioning that I have made liberal use of artistic licence and both names and places have been changed to enhance the pace of the story. As the saying goes, all characters appearing in this book are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

The cover image is based on a photograph of the castle on Holy Island, the setting for the climactic scene of the story.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

As with all the best things in life, they are never to be enjoyed alone. That is very true of the making of Holy Island which, from the start, has been a fun and collaborative process and I am grateful to all of my friends and family for their input along the way. Particular mention must be made of Kirsty, Kirsten, Kate and Tallulah, four Northern Lasses who have offered their enthusiasm, expertise and unstinting support throughout the writing of this novel. Special thanks to my lovely sister Rachael and my step-father, Jim for their wit and levity along the way. To my mother, Susan, a true woman of substance whose love and guidance over the years has given me the confidence to chase my dreams and grasp life with both hands. Lastly but by no means least, to my husband James, that wonderful man who stands shoulder-to-shoulder with me as we walk through life together and without whom none of this would be worth doing.
