I passed by a telephone pole. A faded wanted poster with my face on it billowed in the gentle wind, the ink streaked by the recent frost. I ripped it down and threw it into the river of slush, not stopping to see where it wound up.
Then I hopped in the car and drove home, victorious but feeling like I’d lost it all.
Life was funny, sometimes.
I pulled into the parking lot and trudged up to my apartment.
“Argos,” I called, cracking the door. “You want to head to the forest?”
He eagerly squeezed through the narrow opening, tail wagging furiously. It stopped when he saw my expression.
“You’ll get her back, buddy.”
“Feels empty,” I said as we waded toward the verdant forest. The smell of young elms and fresh roses drifted in the lazy summer air. “Like we lost.”
“Look at all this. How can you think we lost?”
I patted him on the head and then we walked in silence through the druid’s forest. Depending on how the chips fell over the next couple days, it could be the last respite we got for a long time.
But in the moment, I didn’t think about any of that.
Because the tranquil forest reassured me that, one way or another, everything could wind up okay. And sometimes, a shard of hope is all a half-demon needs.
Well, that and his .45.
