David's Debt (First Wave Book 11) Page 23

Grai squeezed the bridge of his nose to try and ease a sudden headache.

“I can’t put you in Dillon. Not yet. I have to come clean to my family and the Alliance first. Can you safely set in motion the end game we planned?” Grai asked, trying to figure out the best way to tell everyone he lied. About everything.

“There are a few that will escape, but they should be easy pickings. I will get it done. I’m also not interested in your private utopia, just a small place, somewhere quiet, where I can raise my family in peace. Like we always talked about,” the man said with a grateful sigh. He was glad Grai wasn’t going to argue with him about this.

“I know. The place has been waiting for you for a century now. I’ve kept it perfectly maintained, waiting for the day you found a mate and had a family of your own,” Grai admitted with a small smile. “I had hoped this mission would be over by now, but the safety of you and your family will come first. I promise you that.”

“What of Tristan? Will you be able to explain this to him? Will he try to kill me?” the man asked.

Grai shook his head in denial even though he wasn’t sure exactly how his son was going to react when Tristan found out what Grai had been doing. If he didn’t know already.

“I am confident when Tristan realizes what we were doing and why, that he will leave you to the peace you’ve earned,” Grai promised, though he had no idea what his son was going to do.

“You know what has to be done if your brothers cannot stop what’s coming,” Tiernan warned Tristan, his heart breaking for his friend.

Tristan blew out a heavy sigh and began to pace the remote mountaintop in frustration.

“I know. You need not remind me of my duties,” Tristan snapped.

Tiernan placed a comforting hand on Tristan’s shoulder as he passed by and stopped him from continuing to pace.

“We can’t fail this time. You know what’s at stake. Our failure on the Prime home world created this problem, to begin with, and if we lose again, the entire beast species dies. Not just your family on this world,” Tiernan warned, hating the pain it was causing his friend.

“It’s worse than it ever was on the Prime world! The evil is greater than I ever imagined it could be! You can’t tell me you retain your hope after seeing what’s become of this world!” Tristan growled, his own hopes plummeting as the odds continued to stack against them.

“Then we must gather our armies and begin the battle,” Tiernan suggested with a devious smile.

“We cannot!” Tristan was aghast at the thought.

Tiernan crossed his arms over his chest and quirked a brow at his counterpart.

“Why? It is we who determine when the battle begins,” Tiernan argued.

Tristan’s eyes widened in disbelief that Tiernan was serious.

“The conversion hasn’t arrived! To begin now means the majority of our armies are ill prepared for the battle to come. What good is it to lose so soon when waiting could mean success?” Tristan couldn’t understand the Dark Warrior’s reasoning.

“It’s not necessarily a declaration of war if we only kill specific targets within our respective realms. But it does help with the odds for success when official war is declared to have their numbers dramatically reduced,” Tiernan said with a sly grin.

“You mean Mastema and the Daemon Kyn?” Tristan asked, shocked he hadn’t considered it before.

“They are the ones turning the odds against your Father and us. We have the power of the realms to do it.” Tiernan knew he had Tristan’s full attention and continued to bait the hook. “All Daemon Kyn are executable with no repercussions, and although you aren’t quite at full power, I can help with that.”

Tristan looked equally shocked and thrilled at the idea. He began to pace again while his mind turned over all of the options in his head.

“What of the way in which we do this? It’s so . . . I don’t know! Underhanded,” Tristan argued, not liking how unfair it appeared to be.

Tiernan merely chuckled and shook his head.

“You’re kidding, right? I think what they’ve thrown at us, and our families here was underhanded. We’d only be fighting fire with fire. The more we pick off, the more stolen souls that are released into the proper realms. We need not wait until the final battle to save them,” Tiernan argued, feeling Tristan’s concern and reluctant acceptance of the plan.

“You want us to hunt? With who?” Tristan asked, trying his best to find a flaw in the plan. If there was one.

“I’m game,” Ashacanna stated as she appeared on the mountaintop and bowed before Tristan. “Commander, it is good to see you again.”

“Our numbers are few, but I’ve always liked being an underdog,” Dizarion said as he appeared next to Asha and bowed before the Warriors.

Tiernan grinned broadly as he slapped a hand on Tristan’s shoulder.

“With your brothers helping to rid the threat posed by your father’s plans and Grai combating the evil among the humans and hybrids, it would be a three pronged attack and one we shouldn’t pass up,” Tiernan argued.

“Just the four of us?” Tristan asked skeptically.

He looked through the Warrior forms to the physical children they were in this world. Except for Dizarion, who was barely old enough to buy beer and he wasn’t convinced they’d have much chance of success. But Tristan was willing to do anything to save his beloved family and the people of this world.

Everyone shrugged and grinned at his question, and their excitement and conviction were contagious. Tristan couldn’t help but be moved by it.

“So you’re going to start in the dark realms, and we’ll take the light?” Tristan asked Tiernan and Dizarion.

“Yeah, that’s kind of what I was thinking. But there’s no reason we can’t work in the physical either,” Tiernan suggested with a mischievous grin.

“He’s right. I traveled across the whole United States by myself and took out several Daemon Kyn along the way. With my energy hidden, they didn’t expect for the Second in Command to the Light Warrior to show up and execute them,” Asha interjected with a huge smile.

Tristan looked shocked for a moment before he turned to Tiernan with a broad grin.

“Then let’s hunt,” Tristan agreed before he unfurled his wings and shot into the sky.

Asha blew Dizarion a kiss before she followed Tristan into the darkening sky.

Tiernan looked to Dizarion and shook his head with a smile on his face.

“Let the children wage the war that should have been fought by the adults long ago on this world,” Tiernan said as he disappeared into the darkness.

Dizarion looked out at the incredible scenery from the top of the mountain for a moment.

“Out of the mouths of babes. Or some such shit,” he muttered before he too disappeared.

Traze was sitting around a campfire with T-Rex, Carol, Jenny, and Kurt, halfway to Dillon with the strange caravan of hybrids. It had taken a few days and a lot of influence by the two couples, but Traze had finally been accepted by the strange group and had actually started to enjoy the trip.

Until Grai contacted him through the shengari’ warning him that their deepest asset was compromised and finally coming in. The information rocked Traze to his core, and he was just trying to sort through his riotous emotions when Grai explained that it was time to speak to the Alliance about the truth.

“Excuse me,” Traze said as he ran from the campfire and as far away from everyone as he could.

Thinking he was far enough, Traze dropped to his knees in the grass and threw up. His hands shook as he braced them on his knees and lost the rest of what he’d eaten for dinner. He wiped his mouth and sat back on his heels as his mind ran through the ramifications of the shit storm that was about to hit his family.

Traze sat on his butt, crossed his legs and put his head in his hands. Then he wept for everything they were all about to lose.
