Desert Son Trilogy: Desert Son, Wayward Soul, Spiritual Intervention (Books 1-3) Page 77

Everybody looked at each other and were suddenly filled with hope. Everybody was where they belonged. Evelyn and Evan stayed back and watched the Spence reunion, outwardly jealous and wishing they had a real one of their own. However, their little one was now in his proper place. They were proud of him because he brought others to their proper place as well. Misplaced souls were moved into the afterlife and finally resting in peace. He even provided that passageway for the safe return of Adam Spence.

  . . .

The following day, Carter and Brenda invited Evan and Evelyn back for dinner and to further process what had happened. Nobody could cook. It was a traumatic, emotional time for everybody involved, so Carter and Brenda threw together sandwiches and drinks and they sat around the kitchen table eating and reflecting.

“I can’t thank you enough for everything you guys have done for us,” said Carter. “I have to be honest…it wasn’t looking good there for a while, but somehow you managed to pull it off.”

“Yeah, I’m not quite sure how you pulled that off,” said Brenda, “but you had to be scared out of your mind.”

Evan looked at Evelyn, knowing that she would be handling the line of questioning because she was the more active one in this latest paranormal investigation. She was up for the task, though, as she was always willing to talk.

Evelyn smiled at them and said, “I have to be honest with you…I have never in my life gone through the lengths that I had to go through with you guys, but then again, I have never had so much going on in one investigation. I mean, my own son was involved in this one too, and I had to reach out to him for assistance. He did what I asked, reluctantly at first, but he did it. I told him how much Evan and I loved him and how our family missed him, and if he moved to that better place, then we would all meet again. I told him that he will only have a short time there without us, but if he didn’t go there now, then he may not get another chance. “

“So you actually talked him into crossing over to the other side?” Brenda asked.

“Well, it wasn’t as simple as that. There was Martin to contend with as well. Two dark spirits were battling within the same arena, and Martin’s parents were trying desperately to coax their son into the afterlife. Martin’s hand began to be forced. He was faced with a lot of pressure from everybody. Then I was telling Martin that the only way for him to reconnect with Shirley’s soul was to pass over into the afterlife. He also could spend the rest of his days with his parents.

Evan looked over at Skippy, who was calm. Skippy was calm because there were no spirits lurking in the house. Even the dog was at ease, propping his snout up with his master’s left foot. The removal of all that extra energy put everybody at ease. Skippy was so at ease that he wasn’t even begging for food. There was a calmness to the house and environment that had been missing since Carter’s parents lived there. They basked in it. They were all drained, mentally and physically exhausted, so this peacefulness was shooting through everybody in the room.

“You know,” said Carter, “for all that I’ve been through, I surprisingly have no pain.” As soon as Carter said this, he froze, remembering the last time he experienced this feeling, or lack of feeling. It was when he was dead. His eyes got big as he wondered if this was all a cover for reality. He looked around at everybody at the table and it seemed that nobody was aware that he was even there.

  “Brenda,” he said.

  “Yes, Carter,” said Brenda.

Carter smiled, reaching over and touching her hand, but said nothing.

  “Adam,” said Carter.

  “Yeah, dad?”

Carter smiled again, reaching over and touching his hand, but said nothing.

He didn’t need to do it again with Evan and Evelyn. He had everything he needed. He had his wife back. He had his son back. He himself was back. He just wanted to know a little more about the menace named Martin.

“Evelyn, you’re pretty confident that we’ll never see the likes of Martin ever again?”

Evelyn smiled at him from across the table. “Carter, I was in touch with my son shortly after the four of them crossed over. My son took Martin and his parents back home. Rest assured that you will not hear from him again.”

“How sure are you?” asked Carter.

“Oh, she’s sure,” said Brenda, smiling.

“I was asking Evelyn,” said Carter with a short laugh, “but how do you know?”

Brenda continued to smile as if she had just seen the light. “When I lost consciousness and drifted to the other side, I met up with Martin and he was with his parents. He kept telling me to go back. I kept asking him if he was sure, and he kept saying that I needed to go back because I was not ready to be there. I saw Mr. Jenkins off in the distance, smiling after the message about my return was transmitted. And as I was returning, I was suddenly accompanied back by Lucas Adam. He took me to the tunnel, Carter, and that’s when I reunited with you.”

Evan reached over and grabbed Evelyn’s hand and smiled. Evelyn was beaming.

“The strange thing is that I never got the sensation that I wanted to stay there,” Brenda continued, “like I hear other people with near-death experiences say, but I think that I knew I was coming back. I never felt right there. I was returning with the comfort of knowing that Martin had successfully crossed over.”

“That would be enough to entice me back out of heaven,” said Carter. He smiled at Brenda and reached over for her hand. They both looked over at Adam who was pretending that his spoon was a truck and didn’t even notice that everyone was looking at him. He was acting like a kid again. It felt normal. He felt normal. Carter squeezed Brenda’s hand, and he felt her squeeze back. Peace and quiet loomed over them. Carter was 35 years old and ready for both of those things. It was a feeling they’d never had before together. The feelings could not have come at a better time, and he was ecstatic that he had another chance to feel it with Brenda and Adam.
