Isobel Page 31

by Chloe Garner

The man crossed his arms, but Isobel ignored him, watching as Aurélie came and sat two chairs down the table from her.

“Who are you?” Aurélie asked again.

“I am very old,” Isobel said, ignoring the noise the man made at this. “Older than you can imagine, and I’ve seen things you can never imagine. Places. I’ve known a great number of people, and few of them have been special to me, but your mother was special. And I promised her when she was only about your age that if she ever needed me, really needed me, I would be here to help her.”

“But…” Aurélie started, thinking about the train again. The somber silence of it, and then that first gasp of air. “You were dead.”

“Yes,” Isobel said. “It’s never stopped me before.”

“How?” Aurélie asked. Isobel inclined her head toward the man.

“Him,” she said. “No matter what, he always comes and brings me back.”

Aurélie looked at the man, who gave her a dour expression in return. He took a sip of his tea, then spoke.

“And that’s all you’re going to find out about that.”

He came to me in darkness and fire and blood, as I lay in the arms of the dead.

My life was gone, spent, and nothing.

He gave me a new one.
