  Chapter One

Wiley pulled into the parking lot of Gus’s bar and parked his bike. Shutting off the engine, he looked around the lot. He knew most of the bikes but there were three he didn’t know. Narrowing his eyes, he closely studied the first bike he saw.

It was a Kawasaki but it was all chrome. He swung his leg over the engine of his cycle and walked over to the bike. Wiley never like the Kawasaki brand of bike. There was just something about the design he never cared for but that was his opinion. Looking back at his Indian Chieftain, there was no comparison in his mind.

He glanced over at the other two bikes but they weren’t much better. Old and scruffy but he supposed they got their drivers from point A to point B. Wiley always felt that a man’s ride said something about who he was. He shook his head at what this said about them.

Heading over to the front door, he pushed it open. He was assaulted by honky tonk music, the stink of cigarette smoke and stale popcorn, loud talking and the clink of glasses all at the same time. The assault on his ears made him wince as he moved toward the bar area.

As he slid onto a stool, he ordered a beer and turned in his chair to study the patrons in the bar. Most of them were locals and he knew them very well. Gus set his beer on the bar and when Wiley turned around to grab it, he took note of the fact that Gus wouldn’t meet his eyes.

Now that could have been because Wiley was wearing his cut that told the world he was part of the Sin’s Bastard’s MC but everyone in the room knew and respected that fact already. When he saw a drop of sweat roll down Gus’s face Wiley’s concern deepened. It wasn’t that warm in the bar.

Wiley narrowed his eyes and stared at the other man.

Gus refused to look up and as Wiley laid his money on the bar, Gus took it and turned to the cash register without a word. When he turned around to give him his change Wiley’s hand covered his. Without a word, Gus looked up at him and swallowed hard. His eyes met Wiley’s then they darted over to Wiley’s left.

Wiley nodded then let his hand go. He picked up his beer and took a sip of the cold brew. Turning around, he scanned the room again, taking his time to catch everything. When he finally looked into the back corner, he saw a table in the far back where three men were sitting. He could almost feel the hate radiating from that corner. It made Wiley wonder why. If they were strangers, why would they hate him? He didn’t know them and they didn’t know him.

He knew from first glance these men were trouble. He’d already been told by several that 3 men had been coming into Gus’s and they looked like trouble. This must be them. The corner they were sitting in was too dark to see clearly but he would bet his last dollar these men were wearing their own cut. All three looked scruffy and unkept. He would be willing to bet they all could use a good scrubbing down too.

The one with his back to the wall was staring back when Wiley met his eyes. He wore a snarl on his face and Wiley had no trouble reading the hatred in his eyes.

He couldn’t help but wonder why the man had such a problem with him. Wiley turned his back on the other men as he pressed a hand on his weapon to his back. Then he looked at Gus.

Gus was drying a beer glass but his actions seemed extremely nervous for Gus.

Wiley had been visiting the Morgan brothers over at their garage. That was where he heard about these new bikers in town. None of them were sure what MC they were with, so Wiley had come over to see for himself. He decided to ride this out and maybe see where these guys went after they left here. He sipped at his one beer, as he wasn’t here to drink.

A long legged blonde came up to the stool next to him and sat.

  He glanced over.

Too much makeup and bleached hair. Pretty to a degree but even her tits were fake.

Wiley had no interest in this kind of woman.

“Hey,” she spoke in a soft sexy voice.

He kept sipping at his beer.

  “Hey!” she called louder.

So much for soft and sweet. He heaved a sigh and looked over.

“Why are you ignoring me?” she asked with a bat of her eyes and a pout on her botoxed puffy lips.

  Wiley shrugged. “Move on, ok?”

She huffed and dropped off the stool to march away.

Wiley tipped his glass. Good riddance. He was tired of this type of female. He felt like he needed something more, but he could never figure out exactly what that would be. Deke and even Sam had the woman that completed them. He had one long ago that he’d thought would do the same and she ended up betraying his club. He’d avoided real relationships after that.

He causally scanned the bar again but this time the back table was empty. Dammit, that blonde had taken his attention for long enough to allow the men to leave without him seeing them.

Wiley turned back to glare at Gus but the other man wouldn’t meet his eyes. He got off his stool and growled at Gus. “You, I’ll be back to talk to. Did you know them?”

Gus refused to look at him but shook his head. “They weren’t here very long,” he insisted.

Wiley leaned in and spoke slowly and carefully to the terrified man behind the bar, “But I hear they’ve been coming in here a lot during the last two days. They never stay long then either but they still come back. Why?”

Gus sweat a little bit more but didn’t say anything. He glanced at the doorway leading to the back room. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I didn’t do anything wrong here.”

Wiley pushed away from the bar and nodded. “We’ll just see about that Gus. You know Deke isn’t gonna like this. If they have been here before tonight and Deke finds out you knew it, he ain’t gonna like it. This is our town and we protect everyone here. You should have told him.”

When Wiley walked out of the bar, he looked over to where the three bikes had been. They were gone now but that didn’t mean much. He could still feel the men were close. He drew his weapon and circled around the back of the bar. His hand was hanging down along his hip but Wiley’s eyes were sharp. When his eyes adjusted to the difference between the shadows out in front and the deeper shadows in the back, he heard a footstep in the distance.

Cocking his head, he tried to figure out where the sound was coming from. He couldn’t hear anything for a moment then things changed in a hurry. He heard two more steps from behind him and when he turned, he felt sudden and intense pain as something slammed him in the back of the head.

Before he hit the ground, he heard someone scream and another sound of metal screeching across the cement. Before he dropped into unconscious, he heard footsteps running away and bikes revving in the distance. Then he didn’t hear anything at all.

Gus nodded slightly. He watched as Wiley turned and walked out of the bar. He knew he was in trouble with the local MC. In his twenty plus years of living here and wor
king behind this same bar... he’d always gotten along with the Sins. Granted, the year before Deke took over the Satan’s Spawn, it had been difficult trying to keep the peace between the men after they’d been drinking but since Deke took over the last nineteen years plus, it had been much better.

The men still drank and partied hardy but they no longer dealt drugs out of his establishment. Deke had put a stop to all of that. Now his bar was a place to come and have a good time, and Gus could only hope he would be able to stay in business.

He turned his head and stared at the table the three outsiders had sat at. He knew those three were trouble the moment they showed up. And yes, they had come to Troy three days ago. Gus had felt nervous when he saw them walk in. One of them was Turnkey, Gus’s nephew

Looking into Turnkey’s eyes, he knew he was here to cause trouble. When he started asking questions about a girl, Gus lied to him. Turnkey must have known he was lying, so he told Gus he was going to hang around a while. Gus knew that would bring trouble to his bar but there was nothing he could do about it.

Turnkey had been looking for someone and that someone went by the name of Phoenix. Gus knew exactly by the description he gave him who this Phoenix was and he didn’t want anything to happen to her.

When she came to him a year ago and asked him for a job she told him her name was Nix. She worked hard, stayed out of trouble, and had become to mean something to Gus so he kept her secret. Since she preferred to work after hours, he allowed her to clean the bar after last call.

He even gave her place to stay as the bar had a room no one used upstairs. He’d grown fond of Nix over the time she’d worked for him. It didn’t matter why Turnkey was looking for her, Gus wouldn’t be the one to give her up. Turnkey seemed to be a cruel man and he didn’t want to know why he was looking for her.

Gus just hoped Turnkey would move on before long. He went back to wiping down the bar and worried about what Deke would do when he found out.

He looked up a few minutes later to see that the back door of the bar was pushed open and Gus looked around the area in a panic. He’d heard the scream as the dumpster sound like it was slamming against the building and had come running. When he saw Wiley laying in the parking lot his eyes widened in horror. He could see the pool of blood around his head getting bigger and bigger. He looked around again.
