Hunger's Mate Page 31

  “Shh,” she told him. “I’ll do the performing tonight.”

  And with that announcement Ezra lay back against the pillows, let his hands slip to his sides, and waited for the performance of a lifetime.

  She continued to surprise him when, as she lowered herself torturously slowly down onto his dick, she took one of his hands and began kissing his fingers.

  “I love you, Ezra Preston,” she whispered quietly at first, kissing his fingers lightly.

  She slid down farther, his dick being sucked into one hell of an abyss.

  “I love you,” she repeated and his chest clenched, his cat roaring on the inside, the man smiling to beat all smiles on the outside.

  “Ah,” she moaned when she had completely impaled herself. “I. Love. You.” Each word was emphasized by a lift of her hips, a drop back down, then a lift, then another drop as they each sighed and enjoyed the rest of the ride.

  “Where are we going?” Dawn asked when they pulled into the parking spot across the street from the Garden District. He couldn’t wait to have her try their famous pulled pork sandwich. It was one of his favorite places to go in the city.

  “Well,” Ezra said, switching off the ignition to his personal Dodge Ram. “I was thinking last night that we’d gone about this all wrong. We started with the physical attraction, then got wrapped up in all the emotional bindings and we left out one valuable step.”

  She smiled, her brown eyes lighting with pleasure. “You really are crazy. We can’t just erase what we’ve already done.”

  “Oh no, never that,” he told her, reaching out to touch her cheek, then letting his finger drift lower until it was scaling the rim of her shirt collar, just above the swell of her breasts. “I would never want to erase any of those memories.”

  Her gaze fell to his hand then lifted back to meet his. “I didn’t think you would.”

  “But my mother would kill me if she found out I didn’t do this right.” With strength he was beyond certain he had now, Ezra pulled his hand away from her delectable breasts and got out of the truck. Running around to the passenger door, he opened it, giving her his hand as she climbed down and out.

  “So we’re going on our very first date, Ms. Dawn Montgomery. I’m going to give you a proper courtship before I ask you to join with me in this tumultuous life of mine.”

  Dawn stepped closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck and looking up at him as she pressed her body into his. “I’d join with you right here and right now, Mr. Preston, without dinner and without a proper courtship.” Coming up on tiptoe she kissed his lips lightly, brushing her tongue along the seam of his lips until he opened his mouth, touching his tongue to hers and taking the kiss deeper. It wasn’t a hungry kiss, not that he didn’t want her, but there was so much more to their connection now, a link that went straight through to his soul, entwining them together beyond anything they could have ever possibly imagined.

  Eli had been coming from the dry cleaners when he stopped suddenly, feeling as if someone was there, watching him. As he looked around he spotted Ezra’s truck and began walking toward it, hoping nothing else had happened. They’d had enough shock and upheaval to last them at least the next couple of weeks. But as he came closer to the vehicle he saw them, wrapped in each other’s arms, kissing as if their very lives depended on that action. He stopped dead in his tracks and simply stared, anger and betrayal spinning through his body in thick heavy waves until it felt like those waves were strangling him, like his breath was hindered by this newfound connection his brother had with this human, like his world was just beginning to end.

  * * *

  And from her car where she’d parked across the street from Eli’s champagne-colored Toyota Tundra she watched him stand there struck by something he saw, wrapped in the fear and pain she’d sensed in him all too often. Her hands fisted on the steering wheel as tears welled in her eyes and her plan to rescue him began to take hold.
