“It might have… I know we will now…forever. You’re not getting away. We will get married. We will travel for business and pleasure. We will take our children with us. We will be a happy family.”
“Do I have a say in any of that? I don’t remember you being so alpha male.”
Maverick…Morgan had been gentle with me from our day in the ocean when he instructed me to swim. He was protective and tender when we toured cities—holding my hand, stepping out first ahead of me, cautioning me, and kissing me constantly. When I finally decided to give myself to him, he made sure I was ready and he made it amazing. There were no demands, no commands, no graphic words spoken from his lips. Just romantic words as he proposed that I return and stay forever.
Forever was a word he often used in the past and present.
“I’m just stating facts about our future together, Waverly. And in case you were uncertain, there was a proposal for forever in there.”
“Which part? Business? Travel? Marriage? Kids?”
“Marriage. The rest goes hand in hand. Your parents were always together…same with mine. My father left traveling to others so he could be home with my mom nightly and be present for our kid stuff… I want that for us, Waverly.”
“What if I want something different?”
“As long as we’re together forever, you can have anything you want.”
Epilogue
Morgan
“Excuse me, Mr. Butler? How about some coffee?” I loved the look of Waverly in my t-shirt as she entered the kitchen where I was rolling out dough for perfectly flakey croissants. “I didn’t notice the smell of coffee.”
“You make the best coffee, Mrs. Butler,” I replied as she drew up next to me and planted a heavenly kiss to my ever-eager-for-her lips.
Noted by the use of “Mrs,” we married a couple of years ago, twice. Once illegally when I took her back to Marseille for a premeditated honeymoon. It was perfectly orchestrated by my old landlady who allowed me to rent an apartment one floor up from my old one—which actually had a better view and balcony, if that was possible. She also managed to find someone to marry us on the beach in the little village where we first met. Of course, we then dined on mussels, cheese and wine as we had ten years before. Neither one of us wanted to return to the states two weeks later, but we had obligations and another wedding to attend.
Joseph and Katherine along with my parents, Boyd and Faith, put together the most amazing celebration for us at the Anderson’s lovely estate following a wedding ceremony in the backyard of Waverly’s childhood home. It was a gorgeous day with blue skies and puffy white clouds that provided our guests with a spectacular view of downtown Seattle and my beautiful wife. It nearly broke my heart when I heard her thank Joseph for walking her down the aisle and allowing her parents to be present as he handed her over to me.
“Take care of her and give her everything she desires. She deserves the world.” Joseph informed me as he gently squeezed my shoulder before joining Katherine.
I had no problem following his direction. Upon returning to San Diego, in between traveling and working on programming lineups, we found the ideal home for us on Coronado Island. It looked like it belonged in Marseille and warmed both our hearts. It wasn’t on the harbor, but it did have an upper balcony that provided a limited view of the water and downtown area. Another nice feature was that we could ride bikes to the village where we shopped and enjoyed everything it had to offer. With our business, Liquid Rush TV, we were able to work from home though we did have an office space within the Butler Tower. The island’s ferry to downtown allowed us, once again, to avoid driving and gave us access to the Seaport and there was even a farmers’ market once a week in the ferry’s parking lot.
Life for us couldn’t get any better…except for the little ones we were about to welcome into our world. Finding out we were having twins was a bit scary and shocking for both of us. Upon discovering that, Waverly let me know she had been a twin but never gave it a thought as to it happening to her…us.
“How are you feeling today?” I rubbed her belly with my hand after I placed the rolled up dough filled with chocolate and fruit into the oven and set the timer. “How many croissants are they craving?”
She turned in my arms and smiled with her dark brown eyes dazzling. “They are hopping around in there cheering for apricots, but I am craving a strong cup of coffee.”
“Only a few more months and you can get your caffeine on, baby.”
She groaned as she counted off the time to go and the months she planned to breast feed. I laughed when she changed the subject. “Did you know that the baker from my favorite café is our neighbor?”
That was a fact I knew well. “How do you think I bake the perfect croissants?” Waverly raised an eyebrow with not an eyelash out of place. “When you mentioned that place after you had a bad dream about me being the new croissant maker…” She tilted her head. “I went there and begged her to teach me.”
“I’m sorry that I never thanked you for that first batch… I…I was…was shocked and…and overwhelmed.” Her stutter still popped out when she was nervous or emotional. I still loved it. “I never had my croissant dream after that…and then…then you made those as my father said you would.”
“Your parents brought us back together again.”
I wiped a stream of tears from her cheeks as she smiled up at me. “They did.”

Recipes for Bouillabaisse, Rouille, and Hot Chocolate
Bouillabaisse
Ingredients
• 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 cup each chopped onion and leek
• 4 cloves garlic, mashed
• 2 or 3 large, ripe tomatoes, chopped
• 2 1/2 quarts water
• Fresh herbs: thyme, parsley, fennel and basil
• 1/2 teaspoon crumbled saffron
• 1 tablespoon sea salt
• 1 pound each: peeled shrimp, lobster, crab (shells used to add flavor to stock); cod, halibut or other flaky white fish, cut into large chunks
• Crusty bread (baguette works), sliced
Instructions:
Heat the oil in a tall pot over medium heat; add the onion and leek and cook until tender. Stir in the garlic and cook for a few minutes and then add the tomatoes, water, herbs, saffron, salt and shells from shrimp, crab and lobster. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat.
Cook 30 minutes, then strain the broth into a bowl and discard the solids.
Pour the broth back into the stockpot and bring to a boil. Add the shrimp and cook until they turn pink. Add the rest of the fish and shellfish, cover and simmer a few minutes.
Add salt and pepper as needed.
Rouille (to enhance the soup):
• 1 roasted and peeled red bell pepper
• Teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper to taste
• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
• 1 small peeled garlic clove
• 1/4 cup fresh bread crumbs
• 1/4 cup fresh parsley leaves
• Fine sea salt, about 1/2 teaspoon or to taste
• 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
To make the rouille (good on crusty bread and in the soup):
Blend everything except the olive oil in a blender until smooth. Add the olive oil while blending slowly. It’s done when it has become a paste.
Hot Chocolate
• 2 cups of whole milk
• 3/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips
• Brown sugar as needed
1. Heat the milk in a saucepan.
2. Once the milk is warm, remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips, stirring until the chocolate is melted.
3. Taste before adding brown sugar
Serve warm in tea cups
