Something Just Ain't Right Page 14

  “That’s not necessary.”

“Yes, it is. The two of you haven’t seen in each other in years, so I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you.”

I could tell my mom was smiling through the phone as I had to smile myself. This was the first normal conversation we had in a long time, which felt pretty good.

“Can you at least tell me where you’re going?”

I wanted to, but I didn’t think it was wise.

“I can’t, Mom, but trust me, I’ll be in contact soon.”

“Morgan, be careful. I love you.”

“I love you too, Mom. I’ll be in touch.”

I didn’t want to hang up, but we were on the phone for way too long. I disconnected, slowly putting it down and sighed.

  “You okay?”

I looked over and saw Hayley wide awake.

I nodded as she sat up. “Yeah. It was kind of hard saying good-bye to my mom.”

She looked sad as she put her arms around me. “I know it was difficult, especially since you’re not sure when you’ll speak with her again.”

“Yeah, it was. I told her Doris would be looking after her. I texted her earlier to see if she could. It would be good for them to see each other and catch up.”

“I agree. Your mom needs to be around family. Just like you need to.”

I smiled. “Well, I am with you.”

She smiled as I held her. “I still feel bad for putting you in this.”

Hayley gave a small sigh while caressing my face. “You didn’t force me to come. In fact, I was sort of begging.”

“Yeah, you were definitely doing that, which was kind of sexy.”

“Really, Morgan. I’m trying to be serious right now.”

“I am too; but everything about you is sexy. You could be reciting the damn phone book and I’ll be horny for you.”

She shook her head. “I bet.”

I lay down and gently pulled her to me. She lay down beside me while I stared at her.

“I really hope this is over soon.”

  “What if it’s not?”

I shrugged. “Well, I guess the good thing is we’ll be together.”

She leaned over and kissed me.

I really did hope this would be over so I could go back to my normal routine. That, and I could rebuild the relationship I had with my mom. Just that conversation alone showed that it could be fixed, but I need to be there to do it. Once I was able to, that would be the first thing I would do.

  Hayley

After getting some more needed rest, we were back on the road the next morning. Morgan wanted to drive straight through to Dallas so we could get there at a reasonable time. His uncle knew we were coming, so everything was set-up for us once we arrived.

Within three hours, we were pulling up into his driveway. I glanced at Morgan who took my hand.

“Are you going to keep the car now?”

“Maybe so; probably will get it painted and possibly see if it could be re-registered with a new license plate. How are you feeling?”

I smiled. “I’m okay. It’s a new day, so everything is fine.”

Morgan reached over and kissed me before we got out of the car. His uncle Rick and his wife Caroline came out of the house and greeted us both. As soon as we were about to enter the house, someone came into the driveway with his arms outstretched. I glanced at Morgan who had a huge grin.

“How are you?” The guy asked as he hugged Morgan.

“I’m great. Damn, I haven’t seen you in years.”

“I know. What brings you by?”

“Just visiting, since its Thanksgiving and all. Will, this is my girlfriend, Hayley. Hayley, my cousin, Will.”

I smiled as I extended my hand out to Will, but instead, he put me in his arms to hug me. I felt a little awkward, but I guess he was friendly with everyone.

“Nice to meet you, Hayley. Anyone that Morgan knows is automatically good people.”

  “Thanks, Will.”

He gave me a smile that made me a little uncomfortable. Actually, his entire demeanor was a little weird. Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I automatically didn’t like him.

“Well, why don’t you two get situated while we get ready for Thanksgiving dinner?” Caroline said as she gave me a pat on the back.

I nodded as Morgan took my hand. I glanced over and saw Will staring at me. I gave a light shiver as I followed Morgan into the house. Hopefully this visit would be a short one and everything could be resolved quickly, because for some reason, I didn’t trust his cousin.

  Not one bit…

  Will

After everyone went inside, I quickly got my phone and hit talk. I needed to provide an update to what was happening.

When Morgan called my dad to let him know he was coming, I couldn’t help but be a little excited, since that meant he would be close and the plan could go on.

The other line picked up and the person started talking.

  “Did you meet her?”

“Yeah. I didn’t think she was going to arrive with Morgan, but she actually did.”

“It’s a good thing she did. Now, everything will go easier than we planned.”

“Definitely. And Morgan won’t know the wiser.”

“No, he won’t. Now, he’ll know how it feels to lose someone that’s special to him.”

“Don’t you think we should try and go after his mom?”

“No; too easy. Besides, Hayley is Lamar’s sister, so it’s like killing two birds with one stone.”

I glanced over my shoulder to see if I was still alone. Sure enough, I was.

“Just don’t screw this plan up. Even though he’s your cousin, there’s still a lot at stake. So, are you still with me on this?”

I sighed and ran a hand through my hair.

  “Answer me, Will.”

“Yes, I’m with you. In a few weeks, the plan will go into effect.”

“Good. And I want updates. Even though we know enough about her, I need more information on Hayley Stevens.”

“I know. I’ll keep you posted.”

  “Good. Talk to you soon.”

  “Okay, Dad.”

I hung up the phone and signed. Honestly, I didn’t want to go through with this plan, but my dad was right; I needed to do this for my real father and for Uncle Craig.

I needed to put the person who killed him away for good.

And she didn’t know it, but his little girlfriend was going to help me do it.
