“He warned us.”
The admiral looked down at the doctor with a face devoid of color and drawn tight by his own stunned shock.
“Who?”
Fenwick Sage’s face revealed a contemplative smile as he shared his thoughts.
“The voice on the radio…the very individual I spoke of today and demanded you locate and eliminate. He said there would be a signal and that signal was the moment after which his listeners are to take it all back. We are living in the moment of that warning right now, Admiral Briggs.”
The admiral vaguely remembered portions of his earlier conversation with Sage but he no longer cared about trying to recall the specifics. He had suddenly grown very-very tired.
The doctor ignored the naval officer’s indifference and continued with a brief lecture seemingly directed only to himself.
“The barbarians are at the gate. We brought the Race Wars to them and now they would bring that same destruction back to us.”
“What do we do?”
The admiral’s tone was pleading, weak, and utterly uncertain. Dr. Sage delighted in seeing Briggs reduced to begging him for direction.
“It is very simple, Admiral. You give me what I asked for. You give me everything that is needed to ensure we win this war.”
Briggs’ eyes fell to the floor, the look of a defeated man in the presence of his better.
“What do you need, Doctor?”
Sage’s mouth crept outward until it resembled a hyena confident of its next meal. Though physically much larger than the doctor, Briggs found himself inching away from Sage, terrified by the aura of inhumanly cold, calculating confidence that oozed from every facet of the small man’s being.
“I need to kill them all, Admiral – every last one of them.”

…Some thirty miles removed from the destruction in Washington D.C., a solitary figure finished confirmation of the attack via a very brief shortwave radio message from the military intelligence operative responsible.
“It’s done.”
The man turned off the radio and looked out across the quiet solitude of the lake property and wondered how long it would be before Sage and his minions finally found him out. A day or two? Possibly a week? Surely not more than a month.
Perhaps Dr. Sage was among those killed.
Even as the thought formed, the man knew it was folly. Sage was still alive. He could feel that certainty as much as he could the cold bite of an approaching storm.
It didn’t matter. The attack was a success. The window of opportunity for a resistance would be wider if but for a little longer. There was hope where once there was none.
It was now up to them…
