“That’s not true,” I said. “I’m in a committed relationship. It just happens to be with two people.”
“I’m not here to get into this debate with you, Alexander. Think of the public reaction. Right now, they’re encouraging you. How do you think the media will portray Cordelia and Roman if word got out?”
“She’s right,” Roman said. “I told you Delia and I are fine with whatever we have to do. As long as we’re together, I don’t care if I have to pretend not to be in love with you in public. And you know what people will say about Delia. They’ll see her with two guys and she’ll automatically be labelled a slut, even though you and I are in this just as much as she is. What we have isn’t the perceived norm, so there’s many who won’t understand it.”
“It’s wrong though,” I mumbled.
“We have to pick our battles,” Delia said. “This way, we can be together without the pressure.”
“Right,” Nanna said. “And here’s the bottom line. The palace is setting up a foundation which you two will front,” she said to Delia and me. “It’s to give aid to those who don’t have supportive networks in their life. It’ll be a shelter of sorts for the LGBTQ community. It will be your jobs to check on it, visit, and be the faces of it.”
“It’s right up your alley,” Roman said to Delia. “Helping people without wearing underwear on the outside of your clothes.”
“Okay, I feel like I’m missing something,” I said.
“It’s perfect,” Delia said. “Definitely something I want to do.”
“Cordelia, you will need to shadow me two to three days a week after you get engaged. You’re not becoming queen anymore, but you will still be classed as royalty when you wed Alexander. You will still be a princess.”
Delia nodded.
“I think that’s about everything I had to say,” Nanna said, standing. “I’ll see you two in the royal offices next week, and we’ll get started on this project. Roman, I’ll see you when you report for duty with Quin.”
Nanna made her way to the front door where her own security detail stood, but she turned at the last second. “Oh, one last thing. If there’s to be children in this relationship, they will be raised as royals. They will be princes and princesses. Therefore, we don’t expect any of them to have brown eyes. Understand what I’m saying?”
Roman smirked, and I could read his mind as clear as day. Guess I’m sticking to anal then.
When we didn’t reply, Nanna nodded. “Now, this fairy godmother has to get going back to her palace.”
I tried not to laugh. “Thank you, Nanna. For making this happen.” When she made her way outside, I turned to both of them.
“We got off light,” Roman said.
“I don’t know about that,” Delia said. “It feels like Xander abdicated for no reason. We still have to deny our relationship, and Xander and I will still have to follow royal bylaws.”
“Not all fairy tales can end with an easy happily ever after,” I said. “Reality needs compromise.”
“The rest of the world doesn’t have to know everything about our lives,” Roman said.
“No one’s going to contest paternity if we have kids with brown eyes,” I said.
Roman laughed. “You didn’t pay attention in school, did you? Two blue-eyed people can’t make a baby with brown eyes. If any of our kids have brown eyes, everyone will know they aren’t royal.”
“There’s a certain royal from you know where, and everyone says his ginger hair couldn’t be hereditary. No one’s giving him a paternity test,” I said.
Roman shrugged. “It’s not a big deal to me. When you start trying for kids, I can use protection whenever I’m with Delia. And if you do have kids, they’ll be as much mine as they are yours.”
“So, we’re really doing this, huh?” Delia asked.
Roman and I boxed Delia in between us. “You’re not ever going to get away,” I murmured.
Delia smiled. “That sounds a little kidnappery.”
Roman laughed. “True. But he can get away with it because he’s a prince.”
Delia pursed her lips. “So, if Xander’s Prince Charming and Roman’s Cinderella, the queen is our fairy godmother, what does that make me?”
Roman and I didn’t miss a beat as we answered at the same time. “Ours.”
Thank you!
