See Jane Run Page 41

by Joy Fielding

There were several seconds of absolute silence during which no one seemed to breathe.

Renee Bower was the first to speak. “I think we’ve given these gentlemen a lot to digest.” She got to her feet. “Why don’t we give them some time to think things over.” She looked directly at Michael’s attorney. “You’ll call me?”

  Tom Wadell nodded silently.

Michael buried his head in his hands as Renee Bower led Jane and Paula from the room. Nobody said a word until they were out on the street.

“How can I ever thank you?” Jane asked, turning to Paula.

“Are you kidding? I’m the one who owes you.”

Jane reached out and hugged the other woman to her chest. “Take care of your little girl.”

“You too,” Paula whispered before hurrying off down the street.

Jane watched her until she turned a corner and was out of sight. “What now?” she asked Renee Bower.

“Well, the criminal charges are out of our hands.”

  “And Emily?”

“I don’t think we’ll have any more problems there.” Renee looked at her watch. “It’s a little early for lunch, but I’m kind of hungry. How about you?”

Jane felt a smile fill her face. “When in doubt, eat,” she said, throwing her head back and laughing out loud. “Let’s go. I’m starved.”
