One look at Paige and I'm ready to break every family rule to own her.
Angelo
My father may be a top organized crime boss, but I'm the one with business savvy. Thanks in part to me, our first-generation family has transitioned the business from Sicily, to the dirty streets of Chicago, and finally to the boardrooms of New York. Now, we trade in real estate and make sure secrets stay in the past where they belong.
I meet Paige purely by coincidence, and after our first night together, I discover that she is one of those buried secrets. I've been warned to keep my distance. Usually I do what’s best for the family, but it's too late.
I'm addicted.
This time, it's personal.
Paige
For the first time in ages, I take the advice of my twin sister, Sophia.
And everything changes.
Overnight, my life takes a direction that leads me into the arms of Angelo, a scorching hot, confident billionaire. Sophia warns me to stay away from him, and I quickly learn the reason has everything to do with an old-world secret she's been keeping from me for years.
I'm promised to a man I don't even know.
Author's note: Angelo is a full-length steamy standalone romance with some dark elements, an HEA ending, and no cliffhanger. Suitable for an adult audience. Expect course language and sizzling steamy scenes.
Prologue - Paige
He came in out of nowhere, whirling and twisting around me like a storm, obscuring my vision. Once he showed up, I couldn’t see anything but him.
Angelo Salvatore. Just his name alone set off a chain reaction of need, desire and lust through my body.
My twin sister, Sophia, told me to stay away from him. As my twin sister and the only real family member I had, maybe I should have listened.
Sophia always had my back. Through thick and thin, she was there. Losing our parents at fifteen meant that we had to become each other’s rock. I’d be lying if I said she didn’t carry most of the burden.
Still, I’d done my best. I’d left our apartment, gone out into the big city of New York, finished college, looked for a job.
The last part had been the trickiest one. While Sophia built her musical career as DJ Sophie B, one of the hottest spinners in the city, I jumped around from job to job, the temp agency that got me gigs being the closest thing to stability that I had in my life.
I didn’t want to be temping at twenty-four, with my quarter of a centennial mark only weeks away. Try as I might, though, things just wouldn’t look up in the career department.
The same went for my love life. That peeked in college before fizzing down to a slow simmer.
And then came my three-week assignment as a database administrator for Neville Industries.
And with it came Angelo.
I should have known it when I saw him in that coffee shop on my way to my job interview at Neville Tower: the man was trouble. It wasn’t his impeccably tailored suit, his broad shoulders or tall, commanding stance. It wasn’t the way he looked at me like not only did he know what I wanted, but he could always be the guy to give it to me.
It was all of that.
Men like Angelo, ones who can have basically whatever they want whenever they want it, tend to develop a certain pomp. It’s not something I usually go for.
But here’s another problem. When you haven’t felt a man’s touch for… Well, an embarrassing amount of time, you tend to overlook certain things.
It’s not that I didn’t try to stay away. I did. But Angelo made it difficult. He got me away from my sister, took me out to that place I like to call an alternative dance club. Sharing the experience with him did something to me. It lit a fire that couldn’t be put out.
I was the one who brought him to my apartment. I let him take my clothes off. I ran my hands all over his body, enjoyed being touched in ways I hadn’t even known existed.
And it all backfired.
With Angelo falling asleep next to me in my bed, I let myself believe that he wasn’t as dangerous as Sophia claimed.
Maybe things would work out after all. Maybe he and I could get to know each better. I wasn’t desperate for some kind of long-term commitment, but maybe we could keep going out. We could see where things went.
Morning came. I opened my eyes. He was gone.
Prologue – Angelo
Let’s be honest. I’ve had my pick of girls. I’ve seen them all. Tall, short. Ivory as sand, and dark as cocoa beans. Curvy and thick, small and p
etite.
I never had a type. Not really. Any woman, if she’s the right woman in the right place at the right time, can be Miss Ready for Angelo to Rock Her World.
But out of all the qualities that draw me in, I never thought I would be so compelled by pure innocence, delicate vulnerability.
That’s what I saw in Paige. There was a strength too, but it was packed away. It was the kind that only came out when needed.
I wanted to protect her. I wanted to sweep her up in my arms and keep the ghosts and demons away.
But she was on the ‘no-no’ list, and for a good reason.
Though I grew up alongside the Bianchi twins, Sophia was the one I remembered. Brash and commanding Sophie B. We’d always had a good enough relationship, but even though she and Paige were identical she wasn’t the one I wanted.
No. Paige’s real appeal went beyond the exterior.
By brother told me to stay away, warned me to keep my hands off the Bianchi goods. But how could I listen? Paige’s body spoke to me, begged me to touch it, to take it in my hands.
She had some kind of tie to our family. I knew that much. The Mafia world is a small one, but secrets managed to be kept fairly well. Most information is traded on a need to know basis.
Both my brother and father felt I had absolutely no need to know anything about Paige.
In that case, they wouldn’t need to know about my time with her.
I went for what I wanted. To say I took it would be crass and wrong. Paige wanted it just as much as I did. She gave me her body, gave me her passions.
But the next morning I knew something was off right away. Just sleeping over meant everything changed.
I never, ever stayed at a woman’s apartment. It did things to their head, did things to my head, made us believe and feel things we had no need believing and feeling.
So, I grabbed my clothes and got out of her bedroom quick. Maybe when we ran into each other I could come up with some sort of good excuse for leaving.
Until then, I needed to focus on hitting the road undetected.
Not such an easy task when your cell phone is ringing away in the girl’s living room.
Dominic had an earful to give me when he found out where I was. My brother always was good at that. He kept up the quiet, broody act until it was time for real business. After that, he could rip me a new one like no one else.
But at least I finally got some answers.
Who is Paige, exactly? And why is she so officially off limits?
Dominic clued me into a few things. First of all, she’s promised goods. Years ago, a deal was struck in the Mafia world. On Paige’s twenty-fifth birthday, she would be turned over to crime boss Alfredo ‘The Pistol’ Moretti. She would become his wife.
My very own brother dearest would be managing the trade. There was a good pay off in it for our family.
But only if everyone played their parts right.
Only if I didn’t piss off Moretti by putting my hands all over his future wife.
Unfortunately, it was likely too late.
Moretti’s men were watching us, Dominic warned. They’re onto us.
I’ve screwed up a fair number of things in my life, but this was by far the worse.
And the saddest part about all of this?
Paige hasn’t got a clue.
Chapter One - Paige
I took in a slow and steady breath, the hit of the asthma inhaler I’d just taken aiding my efforts. When I woke up to find Angelo gone, I assumed he’d done just what expected.
To fuck and run.
I wasn’t supposed to be disappointed. I tried telling myself maybe it was for the best if things between us didn’t go beyond one night of passion. Sophia’s warning rung in my head before I even opened my eyes. He was bad news for me, she claimed. Not the guy I needed to get involved with.
Still, I had hope. Not just because I’d been without the touch of a man for two years and had started to get addled in the head thanks to such a lengthy dry spell.
There was something else between me and Angelo. Something that went deeper than just physical lust.
Was I crazy to believe in that?
Maybe. Or maybe I was just suicidal. A man like Angelo had hordes of women swarming around him. He also had a past, some kind of connection to Sophia that she hadn’t really explained to me.
I figured things might be more complicated than I actually knew about, but I never could have imagined the level the words wafting from the living room hinted at.
After realizing Angelo wasn’t next to me in bed, the talking grabbed my attention. My chest clenched. Someone was angry. Really angry.
I choked in a breath. After a beat, I sat up straighter, looking for my inhaler. After finding it in my purse on the floor and taking a hit, I softly rolled out of bed and pulled on my bathrobe.
“I won’t disrespect you in your home,” came Angelo’s voice through my cracked bedroom door. “But Paige is an adult. She deserves the truth.”
I tip toed up to the sliver of space at the door and peeked out. The couch and Angelo’s back were visible, but not much else.
“If I were you I’d take the back stairs,” countered my twin sister. “Moretti’s guys are out front. Where is she?”
Moretti? His guys?
What the heck was Sophia even talking about?
Unable to take any more of the secrets, I pushed the door open the rest of the way and stormed into the living room. Sophia and Angelo both stood at the open front door, the former wearing her clothes and makeup from the night before and the latter looking even more delicious than he had when we fell into bed hours ago. His dark hair was ruffled, betraying our romp in the sheets. I swallowed hard and tried not to let Angelo’s appearance get to me.
“I’m right here,” I yelled, the words coming out a bit higher than intended. “What do I deserve to know, who is Moretti, and why the hell do you have a problem with Angelo, Soph?”
“Paige,” Angelo began.
I waved my hand dismissively at him, half of my irritation due to it seeming he truly was halfway through sneaking out my front door. I hadn’t expected him to stay and cook breakfast with me, but a simple goodbye would have been nice. Was he only still here because of running into Sophia? Likely.
“Soph,” I demanded, crossing my arms. The inhaler still in my hand pressed into my side, oddly comforting me. I probably wouldn’t need another hit, but at least the inhaler was there for me whenever I needed it. Unlike some actual people.
Sophia’s jaw tightened. “There’s more going on than you… know.”
“Obviously.”
My eyes flicked over at Angelo. Guilt washed over his face. His lips tightened.
“You should go Angelo,” Sophia told him, the cutting tone she’d been directing at him not letting up.
I nodded, doing everything I could to keep myself together. The combination of the hurt over being kept in the dark, my physical lust for Angelo, my disappointment over him trying to duck out, and my consequential effort to not be disappointed, had me reeling.
And forget the asthma inhaler. I felt so sick to my stomach I was in danger of throwing up.
“You should go,” I agreed, hollowly echoing Sophia’s words.
I wanted him to stay, but not if he didn’t want to. I wasn’t that pathetic.
Angelo gave one terse nod before meeting my eyes. “I’ll be around if you need me.”
His gaze lingered on me, giving me the impression he didn’t want to go. Which was strange, considering it looked like that had been his plan just a few minutes before.
I didn’t respond, instead just watched him turn and shut the door behind him.
Sophia took a few steps towards me. “Paige, I just want you to know that I’m trying to protect you.”
I blinked fast, my vision swimming. I needed to sit down, get my bearings, but I also felt frozen to the spot. Something big was coming, and I didn’t know just what it was, but it was about to hit an
d take me under tidal wave style.
“Tell me,” I commanded, in a way I never talked to her. “Who is this Moretti guy?”
Sophia’s shoulders dropped. “He’s head of a big mafia family.”
“And? What exactly does he have to do with us?”
“And… He’s betrothed to you… You’ve been promised to him,” she feebly added, like the first part of the statement hadn’t been explanation enough. The way she averted my eyes said a hell of a lot.
Betrothed. Promised. The words rung in my head. Antiquated words no one used any more.
Sophia looked back up at me. “His full name is Alfredo ‘The Pistol’ Moretti. And you’ve been promised to him for years.”
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. There were too many questions and nowhere seemed like the right place to begin.
Sophia’s words came out faster, spinning all around me, their whirling speed making me dizzy. “I don’t know how much you remember, Paige, about the past. About before Mom and Dad died. I’ve been trying to protect you. I’ve been trying to keep you safe. This engagement, it’s to keep the peace.”
I finally found some breath. “Keep the peace between who?”
Sophia gulped. “Between the Moretti’s and the Salvatore’s.”
My heart contracted. “Angelo’s family?”
“Yes,” she softly whispered.
My head pathetically shook from side to side. “But why me? How can I be a part of this? And why do you know about all of this?”
“Dad worked for the Salvatore’s, Paige. He was kind of their personal tailor. We practically grew up with his kids. You just don’t remember it.”
“Are you saying Dad knew about this?”
She shook her head. “No. I don’t think so. He wouldn’t have agreed.”
I tried to speak but choked instead. A lifelong engagement. Yet another thing I didn’t remember, just like people and events from years ago.
“You should have told me all of this!” I yelled. “You say that you want to protect me. Why the Hell didn’t you tell me about this?” My fingers curled, even the ones around my inhaler digging into my palms. “And why me, huh?! Why not you?”
