As I feel the first bit of water entering my lungs, I’m not thinking about anything but that thick bluish-white glow ahead of me. When my vision starts to go dark, I almost feel as if I’m being cradled, embraced from every direction.
Everything goes black.
Only, I’m not dead. That vague grasp that enfolded my body in the water is now very real, and I can feel the familiarity in the arms that hold me.
“Ryker?” I ask, too afraid to open my eyes if, indeed they’re closed.
“Do you see?” Olive’s voice comes, and my eyes shoot open.
I’m back in that room, standing in a close embrace with Ryker in human form.
“I’m alive?” I ask.
“The connection we forged with you was severed once you left. You had to restore it by your actions,” Olive explains. “This one began to dim in your absence. We have no choice,” she says. “Whatever fate the two of you may have shared separately, the spark has ignited a flame that we cannot ourselves extinguish.”
With that, Olive leaves Ryker and me alone in the room.
“Why did you come back?” he asks. “You could have died.”
I’m sobbing as I clutch Ryker against me. “I thought I did,” I tell him.
“Why?” he repeats.
Pulling back, I wipe my tears with my sleeve and then laugh as I realize my clothes are completely dry.
“I’ve spent my entire life avoiding taking any risks,” I tell him. “That’s why I ended up in that stupid job and that crappy apartment while the life I dreamed about slowly passed me by over and over again. I never took any risks, so I never got anything back. I guess I was tired of getting left behind.”
I don’t know if he understands everything I’m saying or not, but Ryker pulls me close again. He whispers, “You can stay. For as long as you want and as often as you want you can stay.”
“With you?” I ask.
“It is permitted,” he says. I kiss him on the neck, the cheek, the lips.
“I’m still alive, right?” I ask.
Ryker chuckles, answering, “Yes, you’re alive.”
There is so much more I want to say, so much more I want to know, but all that can wait. Now, Ryker’s kissing me, and I’m already pulling at his shirt.
It doesn’t make any sense, but that doesn’t matter anymore. My life up until now has been almost perfect sensible, and it’s amounted almost perfectly to nothing. I don’t know if this is going to last a week or a month or a year. Maybe it won’t last at all. I’m sick of expecting the worst and not being disappointed. I don’t know what this is. I only know that I need it.
I run my hands over Ryker’s broad shoulders as soon as I’ve got the shirt off of him. Ryker and I tear the rest of each other’s clothes off, and we embrace once more. Feeling him pulsing against the skin of my abdomen, though, it’s not long before I’m ready for more.
Ryker supports me with one arm while he slides his other hand over my back and down past my butt, finally bringing it to rest on my upper thigh and I let him guide my leg around his body. I reach down between the two of us, taking his throbbing member in my hand, and I lead it to my waiting opening.
As he slides inside, the unanswered question ceases to be unanswered. Is it possible that what I’m feeling could be something more than mere physical gratification? Undeniably, the answer is yes. There’s still more to figure out, a lot more, but this isn’t just about the thrill of amazing sex or even what I’m doing for the Arturians. There’s a bond forming between us, and as I look into his eyes, I know he feels it, too.
I don’t know how long we’re making love, but by the time we finish, I’m exhausted. This time, I don’t have to wonder how long I can stay in these arms.
As he’s holding me, though, I’m starting to become very aware of a growing sick feeling in my stomach.
“How do you feel?” Ryker asks.
I tell him, “I think I’m just worn out. I’m sure I’ll feel better if I get some sleep.”
“Sleep,” he says. “When morning comes, you’ll be in bed back at the cabin.”
“Mmm,” I sigh. “Keep talking. I could listen to the sound of your voice for hours.”
“You’ll wake up,” he says, “and that’s when it all begins.”
“When it all begins?” I ask, but I’m too tired and too satiated to care about the answer. It’s not long before I’m drifting off into slumber, still held tight in Ryker’s big arms.
My eyes open to the morning light, only I have to shut my eyelids again to keep from throwing up.
Between the long descent underwater and the hours of very enthusiastic sex, I think I should probably give my poor body a break. Only, that’s when I feel something moving inside of me.
I jump out of bed but have to sit down just as quickly as the room spins around me. A moment later, I’m lying on my back again, just trying to keep the contents of my stomach right where they are.
I’m doing pretty well with the whole mind-over-matter thing right up until I feel that churning in my belly once more, and I reach a hand down to feel it. Something presses against my skin from the inside, and it stays there a moment before returning. My stomach even looks a little round.
I can’t believe it. I’m pregnant.
