“May I kill him now, my liege?” Mikhail practically salivated at the thought of having his way with me. He’d once told me in great detail just how frustrating my conversion had been because he’d had to curb his sadistic tendencies and allow me to survive, instead of tearing me apart . . . piece by piece.
The music stopped and the last lingering note faded. “As you wish.”
It was now or never.
“You have many enemies,” I blurted. “I can bring them to you.”
Slowly, Balthazar raised his hand again to stay Mikhail’s strides towards me. “Wait. I am listening.”
My words came out rapidly because, if I took even a microsecond to think about it, I might lose my courage. “I know the way to Iriana, the Fae Queen.”
I had his full attention, but that wasn’t what sickened me.
It was my next words that marked the precise moment I began losing my humanity. Earlier, I’d said my hatred for Balthazar came a close second to what I felt for Julian, the monster who destroyed my sister.
In actuality, it all paled in comparison to the absolute loathing I held for one other person—me.
After all these years and everything I’d faced, every attempt I’d made to redeem this next devastating sentence, nothing would ever remove the stain it placed on my soul.
Glancing about for Klothos in the desperate hope she would say that this had all been some mistake and the future was now restored, I closed my eyes and begged for forgiveness.
And with these words, I sealed my fate.
