“Do you know where we are going?” I asked, as he picked his way over a log then helped me over.
“There is a clearing a few miles from here that we are supposed to meet at, the lady said she would make a portal for us,” he spoke, as he kept heading North. “It shouldn’t take but a few hours to get there.” I looked back over my shoulder, back towards where Kai, Sic, Emot, and Zugo where, wondering if they knew I was gone yet, and oddly missing them.
The sun was high overhead by the time we exited the woods. A large open clearing spread out before us, devoid of any life. “I though you said she would be here.” I looked at Sam as he continued to pull me forward. All I wanted was to sit for a few minutes, but he hadn’t relented about needing to keep going.
“She should be here any moment,” his words sounded different, like he was hiding something from me. When I turned to ask him what was going on, he threw me to the ground hard. “You know, it was so easy to get you away from there. You are so gullible and naive.”
“What are you talking about? I thought you said you loved me.” I tried to stand but he kicked me back down to the grass. Dropping to his knees in front of me.
“Stay down if you know what’s good for you.” He stood just as I began to hear the sound of marching coming from behind me. An army of guards marched towards us from the North. Sam waved a hand as they came up running to surround us. “I did my job now let me go home,” he spoke to someone I couldn’t see.
“Sam why are you doing this? I thought you loved me.” His twisted smile was all I could see as he knelt in front of me.
He captured my chin in his hand and forced me to look up at him fully. The hatred on his face was as clear as day. “As if I would ever love a monster like you.” He pushed me back onto my back and a shadow covered my face.
The sunlight haloed the large figure as he bent lower. “Hello, Margaret, my darling daughter.” Vago’s eyes shown bright green just before he punched me in the face and knocked me out.
“Pick the bitch up and kill the kid.” I didn’t bother making sure my commands were followed. I just walked back towards where the guards had hidden my carriage. The fact that I had needed to travel all the way here, just for the bitch of my daughter, pissed me off.
“Your Majesty, please just send me home, I won’t tell a soul, I swear,” the kid blubbered, and then I heard the sound of a sword exiting its sheath. “Please.” They always begged, and most days I loved the sound of begging, but hearing him beg just made me want to torture him.
“Wait.” The blade stopped inches from the kid’s neck. “Bring him back with us, so I can watch him die slowly.” A guard was carrying Margaret’s limp form, ogling her tits as she hung across his arms. He would die for that, but I wasn’t about to carry her myself so it would have to wait. I turned as the sounds of a scuffle reached me and watched as the kid tried to fight off the guards holding him.
“If you can’t behave, I’ll just have them kill you and leave your body to rot in this clearing.” He continued to fight, so I stopped, pulled my dagger from my belt and walked back to him. I didn’t bother waiting for his blubbering to stop just shoved the blade into his heart and then let go. “Leave him.”
The guards dropped his body as he began to bleed out, and I wiped my hand on my handkerchief, before tossing it to the ground. Margaret was beginning to come around as I began walking once more. I needed to get her back to the Northern territory before the Princes realized she was missing. Then, I could take over all of Lasina, and rule as I always should have.
Margaret fought as she woke up and I barked at the guard carrying her. “Just knock her back out.” He bellowed in pain as she bit him, making him drop her to the ground. She stood up on wobbly legged and tried to run. She got as far as Sam’s body before noticing it and screaming. Another guard caught up with her and hit her on the back of the head catching her before she could fall. I pointed to the guard who had dropped her. “Kill him.” Another guard ran him through, while the one carrying Margaret followed me into the tree line.
The carriage door opened as the footman saw us coming and I stepped inside. “Put her here,” I told the guard holding Margaret. While placing her on the seat a necklace dropped to the ground. He went to get it when I spoke, “Leave it, get moving.” The door slammed, leaving me in cool darkness, then the carriage lurched forward.
I couldn’t help but stare at the prone body lying on the carriage seat across from me. She looked so much like Clara that my mind when back to our wedding day. Clara’s blond curls had been piled high, her cream-colored dress fit her slender frame perfectly, and the way the sun had tinted her skin had made my mouth water. Margaret looked just like Clara had on our wedding day, only younger. We had been so in love, even planning on taking over all of Lasina together. It was only after she got pregnant with Margaret that she had decided she wanted no part in it. We had fought often after that, and eventually, she had fled. But I had found her, and now she was where she belonged.
