Acknowledgments
Without my Indiana connections, this story would not have been possible. Because of Freida and Jonathan West’s warm hospitality, we’ve attended every Formula One race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and enjoyed them in great company. Thanks to Freida also for being such an energetic researcher, and to Natalie West for naming the squirrel. Thanks to Tom and Marylu Delph; Senior Trooper Eric J. Dunn of the Indiana State Police; Julie Weaver and Kevin Forbes of the engineering department at IMS. (Please forgive me for removing the catch fence.) And the dozens of friendly fans whose names I never knew; you provided the background.
Closer to home, my fond appreciation goes to Annette Farrell, Hannelore Kahles, Mermie Karger, Rick Mullin, Pam Perkins (and Alex), and Julie and Steve Sokoloff, for sharing their professional expertise. Hugs to Bert and all the guys at the shop for the continued support.
To my editor, Sarah Durand, and Dominick Abel, my agent: thank you so much for keeping me on track. It’s been a fun ride.
Special thanks go to Johannes Willenpart, owner of both the Lotus 49C and the Arrows FA-1 at the time this book was being written. His enthusiasm for the cars and his generosity in sharing materials made this story the one it is. I will always cherish my photograph in the cockpit and thank him sincerely for introducing me to Michael Oliver, author of the definitive book on the Lotus, and to the Argetsinger family, founders of the superb International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen.
