“I feel as if I kicked them out of their own house,” Mae said.
“They don’t mind,” he said and walked towards her. “Why are you here, Mae? I thought you were leaving.”
“It seems that my gran and her friends have been scheming while I was at your place last night. They are going to look at a house on the outskirts of town, seems they like it here.”
He frowned, making sure he heard her right. “So they are all moving to Grizzly Hollows?”
She nodded, and tears misted her eyes. “I can’t believe it. I thought I’d have to choose.”
“I think they chose instead. And I, for one, would make the same decision, between losing you and moving; it’s what I would have done, what I would do.”
Mae burst into tears. “I’ve always felt so worthless, because of my dad. Now it’s all different.”
“Mae.” He tilted her chin up and kissed her lips, his desire for her almost too much. “I was about to follow you down off this mountain.”
“You might have to one day soon. It’s going to take some organizing getting us all moved up here.”
“Whatever it takes,” he said, and kissed her again, knowing he would never let her go. They belonged together. This might be fate, but they had choices too, and he would always choose to be by her side.
Chapter Nineteen – Mae
“I can’t believe we’ve actually made it,” Mae said, slumping down on the sofa. They had just carried the last box in, the last of many, many boxes, and tomorrow, she would drive back down to Marillo Marsh and pick up the three newest occupants of Grizzly Hollows.
“It has been a long day,” Jay said, sitting down next to her and surveying their day’s work. “But one I have been looking forward to. No more living in separate towns or separate houses.”
“Yes. I am so happy.” She snuggled into him.
“So am I.” He kissed her head, and then turned to her. “Another few weeks and we’ll be in our own house too.”
Tad and Jay had talked things over, and it was decided that Tad would keep their old house, while Jay and Mae moved into a new house further up the mountain. It was a quiet cabin, far enough away that they would have some privacy, but close enough that she could see her gran every day.
“I can’t wait.” She sighed.
Jay looked around. “You know, this is probably the only time we are going to have a house to ourselves until then.”
“What do you mean?” She saw expression and knew exactly what he meant. “Here? In their house?”
“They will never know.”
“Jay, I couldn’t.” However, when he began to kiss her neck, she knew she could. Oh, yes, she most definitely could.
