“Our guests . . .” he started to say, and then stopped and laughed at the obstinate look on his wife’s face. “I can see that you intend to have your way on this, Lady Asheburton.”
Charity nodded firmly, grasped his hand and began leading him toward the stairs. “I intend, Lord Asheburton, to have my way with you for the rest of the night.”
That, Lachlan promptly decided, was the most agreeable suggestion he’d heard the entire day. “Charity is . . . tired,” he said to the rest of the room by way of explanation for their sudden decision to retire.
Cleo Egerton thunked her cane on the floor. “Bah! She doesn’t look tired to me.”
Lachlan stopped, a comical expression on his face, only to have his arm tugged again by his wife. “Good night,” he finished with a sheepish grin. Then he turned, scooped his giggling wife up into his arms, and disappeared up the stairs, taking them two at a time.
