I rose from my bed and moved across to crouch beside hers. She did not move, although I noticed she did flinch. I took her hand in mine and smiled. “You can’t be that good a judge of character, Iris, if you didn’t realise one thing about me.”
“What, that you’re attracted to freaks?”
“No. That I have a thing for robots.”
I placed my thumb and finger on her chin and kissed her. Her lips were coarse, dehydrated and stained with dirt and blood. They were the sweetest thing I had ever tasted. For a moment she resisted, but it was more through surprise than anything, for then she returned the kiss, her arm encircling me and folding me into her embrace. I lay beside her on the bed, aware of my injury, aware of hers, but still unable to prevent my hand roving across her body as we lost ourselves in what promised to become more than just a kiss.
“Hey,” Wraith’s voice came over the speaker, startling me so much I fell off the bed. “No funny business in there. Doctor’s orders. Jeez, some people.”
Lying on the floor, looking up at Arowana’s concerned face gazing down upon me, I laughed. A smile crinkled Arowana’s lips and I decided in that moment that it did not matter what the three of us chose to do next. I never thought I would find love again, but this time I knew it was for real. This time it was forever.
This time I had found a woman who could truly love me back, and that was all I had ever wanted.
