  Acknowledgments

  Nine months earlier

I always hated going out without Eve. I was lucky enough to have her come out with me so much recently, but now she had been like a recovering alcoholic and had refused to come out with me again.

At least I had my fellow beauticians with me.

They'd invited me out but in all honesty, I wasn't really feeling it.

I hadn't heard from my parents in weeks. They'd been touring in Africa, reporting on the devastating living conditions there, and they hadn't had a phone signal at all.

I was proud of my parents. Really proud. They'd given us a lavish house, designed by an architect, and their success meant I never had to do without anything.

  Apart from them.

From a young age, when people would ask me about my parents I'd only spoken about how great they were, but never admitted how lonely their lifestyle made me. They could have at least had a second child so I'd have someone to at least argue with once in a while. I was so thankful to have Eve, I really was.

But tonight I was cursing her because, despite my confident appearances, I was lacking and didn't even have the support of my fellow beauticians anymore who had met with their boyfriends.

I smiled as Natalie—a part-time beautician and colleague—swayed her backside into her partner's groin, doing an ace job at making him hungry for more. Within seconds I was officially people-watching, sipping at my drink and pulling at my tight mini-dress that did absolutely nothing at covering my thighs.

I tilted my head to the side, getting a better angle to watch how Tracey—another colleague—grinded in the most unusual but effective way. I was mentally taking notes when I jumped out of my skin at the close contact and breath tickling against my ear.

"You know, you can get a much better-desired effect by watching at a strip club…"

I shot my head around to see Nick Carson's face inches away from mine as he looked over my shoulder to where I'd been looking.

  I shook my head, "I was…"

  Shit, what was I doing?

  "Just… learning."

I closed my eyes, wanting to gut-punch myself for saying something so stupid.

"Learning?" I saw his eyebrows lifting without even having to look at him.

"From my experience, it doesn't seem like you need the lessons."

I stared back at him, creating space.

The longer I stared at him, the more my mind started calculating how unfair it was for a guy to be so smolderingly good-looking.

  "Where are your brothers?"

"Not here," he said, lifting his beer to his lips.

  "So, you came alone?"

He shook his head. "You see that girl over there?"

I followed his finger that came over my shoulder and in the process his face came closer to the side of mine, our cheeks almost brushing as he peered over my shoulder from behind.

I nodded, my eyes eventually widening at the sight of the two people close to fucking on the dancefloor.

"That must be a blow to your ego." I chuckled, taking another sip of my drink.

Really, I was wondering how this lass had managed to deny Nick and had chosen another guy instead.

Even his scent was enough to pull a woman in, he smelt bloody amazing.

"I'm her side-man, and I did a pretty good job of getting them together, I reckon."

I agreed. "Well, they're nearly fucking so I'd say ten points to Gryffindor."

I smiled but quickly wiped my face of my smile before looking down in embarrassment. I heard him sniffling a laugh even over the loud music and dared to look back at him. Once I did, our eyes connected and his gaze trailed further down to my body and to my bare legs.

"You're gonna be cold getting home in that dress, why don't you let me take you?"

I frowned. "Haven't you been drinking?"

"Yes, but if I were knowingly over the limit I wouldn't dream of offering you a ride now, would I, Petal?"

  I gulped and looked away.

"I'm here with my friends," I said, looking back at the dancefloor for them.

"My friends that… My friends that have fucked off…" I said, turning in my chair to search about the room.

Nick stared at me some more, a clear grin on his face.

"Come on, I can't let you go home alone now. Especially not dressed like that."

"Have you taken a look around? I'm not the only girl wearing clothing like this."

"I have looked around yes, but unfortunately that mini-dress of yours has my full attention over everyone else's attire."

"Wow, why don't you tell me how beautiful I am compared to everyone else, too? Like I'd somehow believe that shit as well… You Carson brothers and your talk..."

I got up and pulled at my dress as Nick stared at me, grinning all the more.

  "Where is your car parked?"

  "Down the road, come on."

"This is hardly down the road, Nicholas!"

I struggled with walking over cobbled roads, roads only meant for the section of Hull named Old Town.

"What did you just call me?" he asked as I reached down to pull my heels off. I was gonna take my chances at walking bare-foot, these heels against the cobbles were murdering my ankles.

"Nicholas? That's your name, isn't it?"

He nodded. "Just no one calls me by my full name..."

  "Oh."

"Here." he moved in front of me and tried reaching for my thighs as he bent forward.

"No way, you can't give me a piggy-back ride when I'm wearing this dress. Everyone will see my ars
e!"

"Look around, it's dead here. No one is gonna see your white frilly panties, now come on."

I gasped. "You've seen my knickers?"

"Shit, are you really wearing white and frilly panties?"

I frowned at him, deciding straight away that I wasn't going to answer him. After just staring at me, he gave me no choice but to get onto his back and effortlessly he lifted me and held onto my thighs. Once my arms wrapped around his neck, he waited before moving and my nose filled with his masculine scent.

"So, were you just waiting to be swept away by Prince Charming at that table alone while ogling dancers?"

  I scoffed. “In a nightclub? It’s hardly Disney World…”

Nick hoisted me up further, his hands getting a better grip on me.

“You really don’t have to carry me, you know?”

“And watch you hobble all the way to my car like a little injured bird?”

  Little injured bird?

  “I find that reference offensive.”

“I find your mini-dress highly offensive. It’s inviting but out of bounds, it’s hardly fair.”

“What the hell is wrong with my mini-dress? You must have seen thousands in your lifetime!”

“Yes, but there’s something about your legs, you wear it differently.”

“What? Are you telling me I-”

“I’m telling you, you make the dress look sexy. It’s sexy as fuck on you, okay?”

This conversation was so odd, and if I wasn't slightly tipsy, I wasn't sure I'd be having it.

I shook my head. “I’m not thanking you for that compliment by the way because you fucked it up entirely.”

I heard him chuckling and the sound made the edges of my mouth creep upwards.

“What about you? The girl you were helping, wasn’t she supposed to be your lay for tonight?”

“Been there, done that. Told you, I was just helping her out...”

“So, you keep all of your shags as friends?"

"Not normally, no… but this girl spoke to me and professed her love for Bobby—another guy I know. Thank fuck it's him and not me." He chuckled.

"God, that must be nice…" I turned the conversation onto a thought that had passed through my head. It wasn't uncommon for me to start rambling my thoughts while under the influence of a few vodkas and coke.

"What? Helping your friends get together?" he questioned.

"No… the friends with benefits thing. You know, a mutual agreement based purely on sex. Relationships are great for some, but others just need sex, you know?"

  "Wow, you have shocked me."

"Why? Because I've confessed my need for sex? Is it such a shock that women need it, too?"

He remained silent, taking in what I was saying.

"Someone should invent an app. You know, so people can meet through their mutual agreement to have sex."

"That'd be pretty good but it's already been done and it's a huge pool of chlamydia and crabs."

I snorted out a laugh and rested my head against his, feeling comfortable. I was definitely tipsy, otherwise I never would have done this.

"I envy people in relationships. I do. I see it, I do," I told him.

  "See what?"

"The way he looks at her."

"I'm gonna pretend to know who you're talking about…" he said.

"The relationship works for some people, they just connect on a different level. All I'm saying is, it'd be nice for the rest of us to have some of the benefits of a relationship but without the actual relationship."

  "That sounds complicated, Petal."

"Why are you calling me Petal?"

"You remind me of a flower… besides, your name is Lilly, right?"

I moved my head away from the back of his and studied his hair, feeling moved by his words.

As we neared his car, he lowered me to the floor, basking in my awkwardness. He smiled at me knowingly, opening the passenger side door for me to get in. I thanked him and got in. Once the door was shut, I frowned as he stood beside the door, glancing around as if in deep thought.

Once he eventually made his way back around the car and to the driver's seat, I stared across at him.

"So, how do you get them to give themselves to you?"

"What on earth are you talking about?"

"You know, what are your techniques? You got moves you only use on certain girls?"

"You think there's a manual on how to get laid? As if my looks alone aren't enough?"

"Oh come on, you know your good looks are enough. I know your good looks are enough…"

The air thickened as he continued to stare at me.

  "You really wanna know?"

  I nodded, feeling him nearing.

"You sure?" he asked, getting closer into my personal space, causing my breath to hitch.

I nodded, feeling the heat in my body rising.

"Closeness is the key to seducing a woman, her body can't help it," he answered seductively. "As if programmed to answer the male presence lingering so close beside her, the scent and the way his touch prickles at her senses, teasing her needs."

I nodded, taking a large gulp as he stared at my lips.

"I know better than anyone that women need sex too, I use it to my advantage."

He had gotten so close that he could have pecked my lips, and all I could do was search his eyes as he stared at them, feeling plump and tingly under his intense stare. Then suddenly he moved back, leaving me almost breathless until I sat upright in the seat.

"Holy shit," I whispered, looking out of the side window. "That wasn't fair," I said, adjusting my body.

"You wanted to know what really works." He smirked before starting his car and pulling out of the space.

"I can show you, if you like?"

  "Show me what?"

"How to get guys…" He glanced at me from the wheel.

"Excuse me, I know how to get guys. Any woman can throw themselves at a single man and get what she wants, I like to think I'm a little old fashion, even if in the smallest way."

"What way is that? I'm interested."

"Okay… So I like to be approached, I don't like to come across as desperate. I want to have hot sex but keep some control by letting him know that he had to be somewhat decent in order to get me there. I know it sounds boring, but even in one-night stands, chivalry doesn't have to be dead."

"I've never, ever heard a woman come out with something like that…"

"Well." I chuckled. "That may as well be my closing line as to why I'm not getting laid. The speech for all women loyal to their sex toys…"

"You have sex toys?" He grinned.

It was time to shut up...

  "Anyway…"

"Women always shut down once they hear that question."

"Well, it can be embarrassing. Almost like admitting you're not getting laid…"

"You just spoke about women's needs and basically how men need to realise that women have needs, too. So, isn't having a sex toy embracing those needs? So, why be ashamed or embarrassed to talk about it? It's kind of conceited, don't you think?" Nick eyed me.

I stared at him, my mouth slightly agape.

"Okay, I'm far too tipsy for all your technical talk."

  "Technical talk." He scoffed.

"Perhaps it's time to put that talk to some use, to actually show your stand for women's needs. By getting what you want."

"You mean, by getting myself a man?"

  "By meeting those needs…"

  "Spit it out, will you?"

"Look, you know I think you're absolutely smoking hot, I'm itching just sitting next to you in this damn car."

I gulped, trying not to stare at him like a stupid fool.

"Perhaps we can be friends and help each other out. I'm getting bored of the nightclub thing and picking up girls."

"You mean, you're sick of having to try?" I smirked.

"Didn't we have this conversation about my looks being enough to get me lai
d?"

"You're really cocky, some might even say big-headed."

He smiled. "We could have an agreement as friends to please each other, discuss what we like and experiment."

"You're not into some freaky fuckery, are you?"

"Jesus! No, I just like to fuck. And hard."

I did my best to try and clear my throat and turn away so he couldn't see my body tightening at his words. It wasn't hard to miss that I found Nick irresistible, but all women did. I couldn't believe what he was suggesting.

"You're suggesting a sort of contract, with boundaries?"

After pulling up outside of my house, Nick looked at me.

  "Boundaries?" he asked, confused.

"To determine my hard lines. What I'm comfortable doing, and what I'm not..."

"Lilly, I don't want to tie you up from the ceiling and fuck you, I just wanna...unless you're into that stuff...are you into that stuff?"

I shook my head and almost snorted.

"Okay, then in that case I'm simply proposing a mutual agreement to have sex with someone you feel safe with."

"How do you know I feel safe with you?"

  "Well, don't you?"

His intense stare made my insides ripple and he wasn't even physically touching me. I nodded, which seemed to make him happy.

  "Shall we go inside?"

"You want to go inside?" I asked nervously.

"That's why I suggested it." He smiled knowingly while my body weakened.

"Sure." I eventually agreed, trying to appear in control.

I led the way and unlocked the front door, about to reach for the light switch. Only, before my hand could flick even one light on, it was taken away and held at my side as Nick led me inside and the front door locked behind us.

"Nick?" I asked, slightly panicked but a second later I felt his hot breath trailing against my jawline and down my neck.
