I stuck out my tongue at him, fighting back a smile as he grinned my way. “Some things I like to do myself.”
“Like put yourself in a position where you could break a few bones? We need to change that mind-set, Sparky. Put safety first and all that.”
“Maybe tomorrow.” I stretched a little farther, fumbling for the hook. “Got it!”
I snagged the wire over the hook just as I lost my balance. The ladder seemed to slip out from under my feet, and the ground moved toward me at an alarming rate of speed. I never hit the pavement, though. I mean, I hit what felt like a brick wall, but it had arms that slowed my fall and a scent that soothed the panic inside of me.
A wall of dragon.
My dragon.
And boy was he cranky.
“By the fates, girl. I’m never leaving you alone again,” he said, growling deep and long and not at all sexy-like. Yup. Still a lying liar.
“Sometimes you must. How was work?”
Kingston had moved to Kinship Cove for the opportunity to expand his client base. At least, that’s what I told myself—we both knew he’d moved to be closer to me. Lying liars, remember? He consulted with local fisherman on how to better distribute their products. Dragon couriers were a thing, apparently, and he had a network of friends who could cart the fish from Kinship Cove all the way across the mountains and to the next shifter town. For a fee, of course.
“Work was fine. How about you? Any new treats I need to try?”
I grinned up at him as he carried me inside the bakery. “You have developed quite the sweet tooth.”
“Only for your sweets,” he said just before he finally kissed me. “Mmm, spicy.”
“More.”
He came in for another kiss, shifting me in his arms so I could wrap my legs around his waist as he held me up by my ass. As he teased me with squeezes and rubs. As he pinned me against the wall and growled deep in his chest, pressing his cock against me.
“We should go home.” I wiggled against him, making sure he knew what I wanted. Not that I ever had a problem with that. The man was insatiable and absolutely obsessed with pleasing me. Our orgasm division was split at a five-to-one ratio in my favor. Not that I was complaining.
“We should. I’d hate to spank this pert little ass where everyone could see.”
He gave me a pinch to make his point. I jumped. You would have too. “Not sure why I deserve a spanking. I was just doing my job.”
“Danger is not in your job description. Neither is electrical work.”
“I’m an owner. Everything is in my job description.”
“Well, let’s put that in mine instead.”
“You don’t work here.”
“I can. And I will for that sort of stuff.” He kissed me again, letting me drop to my feet. “Ask me to help you, Sparky. I’ll happily do whatever you need.”
“Fine.” I flipped the sign in the window to Closed and hurried to the door, locking it before I turned to wag a finger at the man who drove me absolutely crazy…in the best way possible. “But no ladders for you.”
“No?”
“No. You could fall.”
“I wouldn’t fall.”
“You might. And you’re older than me. You might not bounce back as quickly.” I dragged him into the kitchen, biting back my grin as he scowled at me. Oh, this man was so much fun.
“I bounce back just fine.”
“You could break a hip. And then what would you do? How would you keep me all safe and happy if you were immobilized, Daddy?”
That did it. He growled deep and snatched me right off the ground, shoving me against the back door as he practically panted. His pupils had turned catlike, his skin growing darker as his scales peeked through. I loved bringing forth his dragon. Loved the animalistic side of him.
Especially when we were at home and I could get him naked.
Because naked in the bakery was no longer allowed.
Don’t ask.
“Home,” I said, wanting so much more than I could take in the place where I worked. “Right now.”
“Are you demanding something, mate?”
“Yes.”
“Well, okay then.”
And then we were flying. And I was laughing the whole way.
Being mated to a dragon shifter was the best thing ever, especially for commuting.
Not that I’d ever tell him that particular fact about our relationship.
Okay, fine…I might. But only if it meant he’d fly faster. I needed his hands on me, not his claws. Needed his body weight on me, not lifting me up. I needed him.
Every day.
Always.
And maybe…just maybe…forever.
Eventually.

“Hey,” I said, pushing in from of Jericho and placing a hand on his chest. His very hard, muscled chest. Oh my. “Quit growling at strangers.”
“You know that guy?”
To lie or not to lie. That was the question. “Not really. Seriously, though—no growling. You’ll scare people.”
“What’s going on with you, Madeleine?”
He never used my real name. Never. Hearing it from his lips, the way his tongue worked from the d to the l, made my skin positively tingle.
But he looked away from me, back to where Ryder was pulling out of his spot, and the entirety of my world crashing down on top of me became real.
He could not know my secret.
“Nothing’s going on,” I said, leaning closer and rising up on the balls of my feet. “Go home, Jericho. I’m fine.”
And then, to prove my point, I kissed his cheek. Lips on flesh and his warm, spices scent surrounding me. I might have sighed. I also might have broken my own heart.
