Around 2010. This was my self-funded and self-released album—before Netflix did specials. Permission granted by Robyn Van Swank.
About 2014. Twice now I’ve been honored to perform with the USO for our troops in Afghanistan. This trip was with The Today Show. It was Jay Leno, Al Roker, Craig Robinson, Kevin Eubanks, and me. Permission granted by Fred Greaves.
As a comic, you jot down jokes or keywords on whatever scrap you can find. I’ve even written sets on gum wrappers. This ancient set is from my first few years in comedy. I remember a few of these jokes but it mostly just reads like a crazy person’s grocery list.
I met Mayim at the “Elle Women in Comedy” event. I did stand-up in front of a room of Hollywood’s most important women in comedy. I couldn’t believe that afterward, her publicist asked if she could meet me. I couldn’t believe she knew who I was, let alone that she was a fan. We’ve been friends ever since. Here we are at my 34th birthday party. I told everyone the theme was “gothic” and Mayim was the only one smart enough to correct me and said, “Gothic is a style of architecture; Goth is how you want people to dress.” I was like, “Well, let’s hope no one misunderstands and comes dressed as a cathedral.”
This is Jodi and me at one of a billion birthday parties we’ve attended together. Fun fact about women: We all love photo booths. She calls me “Mew” and I call her “JoJo.”
I adopted Blanche around 2010, so I would have a dog to take on the road with me. I wanted a companion. The day I got her, I looked at her and said, “I don’t have the time to train you, so just be cool,” and she was. She sleeps entire plane rides, loves to be there, and is virtually always silent unless she is alone—then she freaks out. She just wants to always be included. Since I got her, she has traveled by my side to almost every single gig. We do everything together. Now we are to the point where she has her own fans. It warms my heart to see how excited people get to meet her at my shows. I just love sharing her beauty with the world. She is an angel and improves the life of anyone she touches. Blanche has a permanent sad/terrified look on her face. She’s fine. After this show, about fifteen people brought her treats and gifts. She has a good life.
I think this picture perfectly encapsulates my image: all black, very tight pants, dope sneakers, and I’m sort of always hunched over, talking about something feminist or whimsical. Credit: DJ Trauma
