The workmen completed the repairs on Dad’s house, and he moved back home. He came over a couple of times a week to help Glenda cook, and shuttled her to the grocery store and me to doctor’s appointments. Watching Glenda in a grocery store was an experience. The first time, she just stood and stared, not sure where to start.
Wil dropped by almost every day to update me on the investigation. Jimmy Alderette and his wife completely dropped out of sight. Wil did say that Sophia flew out on her father’s plane to Italy, evidently for a long vacation. Otherwise, the Donofrio family was a black hole as far as information. Total silence.
The doorbell rang. “I’ll get it, Glenda,” I called.
I opened the door to find Wil standing there.
“Oh, hi. What’s up?” I asked.
“I dropped by to see if you wanted to go to dinner. I’m headed back to Chicago in the morning.”
“You really should have called,” I said. “I’d love to go with you, but tonight isn’t good. Glenda cooked her first lasagna, and we invited people over.” Nellie and my mom and dad were there. “You’re welcome to eat with us. Are you sure you couldn’t stay over another day?”
He bit his lip and took a deep breath. “No, I already told my boss I’d be back in Chicago tomorrow.”
“Give me a call the next time you’re in town?”
“I’ll do that,” Wil said. He turned to walk away, then turned back. “I do want to see you again.”
I watched him walk back to his car. I wondered if he was serious about moving to Toronto.
