Why I Can't Have Nice Kings

by Matthew Helbig

Hat gave me a glare so forceful that I stumbled off the stairs. I regained my footing, but it was really hard with his nearly poisonous coffee breath floating around.

“Hat, calm down. I don’t know how it really exists. I made it all up. Maybe it was when I rubbed that lamp three times.”

“It was a picture in a magazine, and the kid you made your wishes to was dressed as Papa Smurf. Even if you somehow didn’t know it was real, how could you lie to me about the ending? How could you do that to Verix? You said you modeled him after you.”

“I think you need to read it again. I didn’t do anything to Verix.”

  “You’re in denial!”

“I deny your denial.” I was afraid I’d get a sunburn from Hat’s glare. “Hat, calm down. I’m the one in charge here, and what I say goes. We’ll keep the ending the way I wrote it the first time.”

“We will not! You killed him.” He poked me in my favorite nipple.

I pushed his finger away. “Sir. Don’t you mean ‘sir’?”

“No, I will not call you that until you put the real ending in. Your fans deserve the truth. Vyenra is real, and her true story must be told!”

“It’s my book, not yours. I can and will do with it what I want. The law is on my side.”

“Not according to the changes in your will. It’s only if you’re alive and conscious.”

“How do you know that? Only my lawyer knows that.”

Hat very rudely didn’t answer me. Instead, he grabbed a fireplace poker and hit me on the head, which I suppose was the answer to the other question running through my mind: Was this scene in the cabin all a dream?

I fell to my knees and attempted to raise my arms, but they wouldn’t move. This wasn’t real, I tried to say. But it had to be, because it hurt so much. How could he do this to me? How did he know about my will? Why did I have to wear my Care Bears footie pajamas to bed on this of all nights?

“You like to talk in your sleep, Harry. That’s how I know. Don’t worry, soap operas taught me how to knock someone into a coma without killing them. Once you wake up, you’ll see how much better the true version is. I’m sorry, but I have to do this for all of your fans.”

I felt the impact in my heart before the last blow hit.

  The End

Did Harry live? Will Hat ever call him “sir” again? Is Maillib really Billiam? Did Wolf finally get Cat to wear pants?

Don’t worry—this isn’t the end. Find the answers to these questions and more in the continuing saga of the world of Vyenra (though I’m not promising which book they’ll be answered in. Bwa ha ha!).
