“Why didn’t you just tell me?” said Maddy. “This was the secret you’ve been keeping, right? Why didn’t you just tell me what was going on?”
“I didn’t want to ruin your birthday,” said Matilda, sadly. “I didn’t want to be the one to break it to you either but who else was it going to be? Sweetie this doesn’t mean that we don’t love you. It doesn’t mean that you were a burden of any kind. We just want some time for ourselves, you know? After we come back you can move back in with us, we’d be happy to take you, but life has taken a toll on us. We deserve this.”
Maddy took a deep breath and calmed herself. All of a sudden, she was the mature, adult Maddy once again. She realized that this was just another part of her life. The third chapter had been imminent; it was just starting a little early now. Besides, Aunt Matilda was right. They did deserved to enjoy their lives. They had taken care of Maddy all of these years. She couldn’t blame them for wanting to take some time for themselves. She had asked them to do it so often, and now they could finally afford to do it.
She hugged her Aunt Matilda and thanked her for having taken care of her all of those years. Her thoughts then turned to Caleb. She was going to be living with him now. She wondered what that would be like. With all of the new, confusing things that she was feeling there was definitely going to be awkwardness.
Maddy was happy, though. She was going to be living with Caleb! She had wanted this for the longest time and now it was finally coming through. She realized that she couldn’t wait to leave and move in to Caleb’s place.
She felt a thrill grow in her until she thought she would burst from him. She shivered as she remembered the unbidden fantasies from before.
She would be living with Caleb.

Chapter One
Maddy was waiting at the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of the vehicle that Caleb would be arriving in. The shock of what Aunt Matilda had told her had worn off more or less. Now Maddy was just excited about the fact that she was finally going to meet Caleb after all these years.
Each time a car approached, Maddy’s heart would skip a beat. She was disappointed every time a car drove past the house. She had had a dream the previous night about Caleb. In the dream she had been sitting with Caleb at the dining table. They had been eating pasta. Caleb had been feeding her with his own fork.
The dream had gone off on a rather naughty tangent soon after that. Maddy tried not to think about it right then. Caleb was going to be there any minute. She didn’t want meet him thinking about a dream like that. She wanted their first meeting after all this time to be about their reunion and nothing else.
Finally, one of the approaching cars came to a halt outside the house. A figure stepped out of it, approached the house and rang the doorbell. It was Caleb.
He had gained quite a bit of muscle since the last time Maddy had seen him. The frequent trips to sunny foreign countries had also given him a marvelous tan which she could see all the way from her bedroom window.
Maddy could not resist anymore. She bolted downstairs to open the door, only to see that her Aunt Matilda had gotten there before her. Maddy saw Caleb walk through the door. He greeted Matilda with a smile, and then looked up to see Maddy. Their eyes met, and for a long while they simply looked at each other.
Upon closer inspection, Maddy realized that he had not just gained a bit of muscle since the last time she had seen him, he had become positively bulky. He had also grown a rather thick beard. His tan was magnificent, making his skin look like it was burnished bronze.
He was gorgeous.
“Maddy,” said Caleb, his face breaking out into an enormous smile. Maddy couldn’t help but smile back. Caleb’s smile had always been infectious. He spread his arms open and Maddy rushed into them. He enveloped her in a tight embrace.
Maddy savored the feel of his muscular arms wrapped around her. She felt so safe here. His arms felt like home. Caleb had always been Maddy’s truest friend. The least judgmental, the most supportive, the most caring of all her friends, Caleb was all these things and more. She was so glad that he was back that she could barely stand it. She wanted them to stay in this embrace forever.
Caleb sighed and held her at arm’s length, looking at her. Maddy saw happiness in his eyes, but she also saw something else. Something she didn’t remember seeing the last time they had met all those years ago. She wondered what it was. It looked like confusion.
“God you’ve grown so much,” said Caleb. “I mean, I’ve seen all of the pictures you sent me, but God. Actually seeing you all grown up like this is something else.”
“You’ve grown too,” said Maddy, a devilish grin on her face. She was positively giddy with joy.
“Where’s your luggage?” asked Caleb, looking around for signs of a suitcase. “Are you all packed?”
“Yeah, my luggage is upstairs,” said Maddy.
“Alright,” said Caleb, “let’s go and get it.”
Maddy and Caleb brought down Maddy’s suitcases. Maddy had been surprised at how easily all of her possessions in the whole word had fit into two medium sized suitcases. She only had clothes, some books and her laptop.
Once they were down, Maddy hugged Aunt Matilda goodbye. To her surprise, Aunt Matilda actually got a little weepy seeing Maddy go. She told Maddy that she loved her more than anything, and that she was always welcome at their home once they were back from their trip around the world.
Maddy hugged Uncle Robbie, put the luggage in the trunk, waved the two of them one final farewell and then set off. Just like that, one of the biggest chapters of her life was over.
Chapter Two
As Caleb drove, Maddy admired him. He was so strong; his every action seemed to exude masculinity. He looked like he was made of solid rock.
“So,” said Caleb. “What’s been going on?”
“Nothing special,” said Maddy. “The summer holidays are getting a bit boring now. I can’t wait to get back to college and finish my semester, finally. Then I’ll be able to get a job and get my own place.”
“Wow,” said Caleb. “Thinking about your place already? I mean, you haven’t even moved in to my place yet, technically speaking.”
Maddy realized that he was teasing her. She laughed and said, “Yeah well, you have your own life too, you know? I don’t want to get in the way of that for too long. How did you manage to get a place here, by the way? Won’t it make it difficult for you to work?”
“Work’s not going to be a problem,” said Caleb. “Not for a while, at least.”
“Did you quit?” asked Maddy.
“Kind of,” said Caleb. “You can say I’m taking a bit of a sabbatical. I’ve been working so hard for so long, I just needed a break from it all. I have savings that I can live off of for a fairly long time. At least long enough that I can provide you with a home until you finish college.”
He had given up work for her. Maddy couldn’t believe that he would do something like that for her. She knew that the real reason he had left work had been her. No matter how much of a toll his job took on him, he would always love it. It had been his life for years, after all.
This gave Maddy an inkling of just how much Caleb loved her.
“My apartment isn’t that big,” said Caleb, “but you’ll have your own room. You won’t have a yard like you did with Matilda and Robbie, but I t
hink it’ll be fun living together. We’ll be able to spend some quality time together.”
“Oh Jesus, quality time?” said Maddy with a laugh. “You sound like you’re my father.”
“Well, I’m old enough to be,” said Caleb.
“No you’re not!” said Maddy. “You’re, like, thirteen years older than me. I mean I guess it’s technically possible for you to be my dad, but that only happens in really unusual circumstances.”
“Hmm,” said Caleb thoughtfully. “I guess you’re right. I don’t know why but I always felt as though the age gap was bigger between us. I mean, I knew in the back of my head that the age gap isn’t really that much but... I don’t know. I guess I had gotten so used to the idea of you as my daughter that I forgot that you’re not that much younger than me.”
Caleb turned his head to look at her. Maddy sensed intensity in his gaze. She felt butterflies in her stomach. Why was he looking at her like that? What was he trying to say? There was so much that Maddy needed to think about.
Being with Caleb now was amazing. However, Maddy couldn’t help but feel that their relationship would be affected by the fact that she had thought about him while fucking her boyfriend. It wasn’t affecting her behavior at the moment as she was simply too excited to see Caleb again after all these years. However, Maddy wasn’t sure if she would be able to keep her newfound desires in the backseat for very long.
Caleb’s looks were making it worse. Every time he looked at her like that it chipped away at the wall she had built around her budding sexual attraction to the guy that was basically her stepdad. She didn’t want to want it, but want it she did.
This couldn’t happen. Not now, not while she was moving in with him. What was there to stop her from making a move? She would be alone with him all day. They would probably be spending their days together since they had been reunited after so long.
Was there a hidden motive behind that? Did Caleb want her alone with him for some reason other than the fact that he felt that she was his responsibility?
All that Maddy knew was that she needed to make him stop looking at her somehow, so she said, “Caleb pay attention to the road.”
Caleb’s head snapped back to its original position. Now that he was no longer looking at her, Maddy was free from the overpowering sexuality of his gaze. She was glad for this, as it gave her the chance to look at him properly too.
She drank him in, from his chiseled jaw to his perfect neck, so sinewy and muscular, so inherently manly. She realized just how turned on she was by the thought of how masculine he was. She had a feeling that his chest was hairy. This turned her on immensely.
Maddy crossed her legs as tightly as she could and began to look outside. Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw Caleb glancing at her.
Nothing about this was right. She had thought that they would be chatting the whole way to his place. Instead, the ride was filled with sexual tension. If this had been one sided, perhaps Maddy would have been able to get past it. However, based on the way that Caleb was behaving, she was starting to find it increasingly difficult to believe that he only thought of her as a stepdaughter and friend.
“Look,” said Caleb. “I know that there is lot that we need to talk about. I mean, we’ve just met in person after nine years apart. Nine whole years of talking either over the phone or via letters, and not once did we meet. Obviously, we need to discuss what our relationship is. I mean, I haven’t been your dad in years. I can’t be that now any more than I could back when you were twelve. We are just too close to each other in age.”
“So what are you trying to say?” asked Maddy.
“Nothing,” said Caleb. “Just suggesting that we should talk about how our relationship is going to work. We’re going to be living together for a while, and a face to face dynamic is entirely different from one that involves the exchange of letters.”
The maelstrom of confusion was back. Maddy couldn’t help but wonder, was he saying these things because he wanted to be a responsible father figure or because he was thinking the same things as she was about their relationship?
Chapter Three
Caleb helped bring Maddy’s luggage in once they arrived at his apartment. Maddy sat on the edge of her bed, trying to take in the new apartment that she was in.
It was a nice place. Caleb had said that it was small but it wasn’t, really. It was pretty spacious, even though it was a bit smaller than the bottom floor of the house that Aunt Matilda and Uncle Robbie lived in. Caleb wasn’t much of a decorator, though. Maddy realized that there was a lot she could do with the place if Caleb gave her that much creative freedom.
She began to unpack her things. She figured that a conversation with Caleb might actually be a good idea. Maybe the more mature thing to do would be to sit down and talk about the sexual tension between them. After all, they were both adults. Such things probably weren’t all that uncommon. A discussion might even allow them to discuss whether such a things would be possible or not...
Maddy immediately chastised herself for thinking that way. There was no way that she and Caleb could have any kind of romantic relationship. There was just too much emotional baggage that would come with that. Caleb had been her mother’s husband. They had both lost her when she died of cancer. By getting together, by expressing sexual love for one another, they’d be betraying her memory.
Caleb had been her stepdad once. This made the thought of a relationship seem taboo. He wasn’t her biological father, he wasn’t even old enough to be, but the fact remained that at one point in her life she had called him daddy, and that just made the concept of having anything sexual with Caleb seem wrong.
Then again, the thought that he had been her daddy once upon a time was a bit of a turn on as well. Maddy buried her face in her hands. She wanted it so bad. She wanted him so bad. There was nothing she could do, no way she could think of that could make her stop thinking of him in that way.
When she thought of the fact that being with Caleb would be betraying the memory of her mother, she would end up telling herself that her mother was long since dead. Besides, if she could speak to Maddy right now, she would definitely say that Maddy should do whatever she wants in order to be happy. She might even give them her blessing. Now that she was dead, Maddy’s mother couldn’t have Caleb anymore. Since he was a free agent, why couldn’t he be Maddy’s?
The taboo factor didn’t really seem to deter her now, either. The fact that they weren’t biologically related, along with the fact that he was only a little over a decade older than her made it very easy to ignore this aspect of their relationship. There was also the fact that his status as her daddy, or former daddy at least, only turned her on that much more.
Sighing, Maddy opened up her suitcase and began to unpack her things. She had a lot of things that she wanted to get done before it was time for dinner. She suddenly realized that she didn’t know who was going to make dinner. Surely Caleb was going to cook her food on the first day she had arrived at his place. However, Maddy wanted to do something nice for him. She just wanted to make him happy somehow.
She exited her room and spoke to Caleb who was sitting at a table in the kitchen, reading a book. “Hey Caleb?” said Maddy.
“Hmm?” Caleb replied, looking up at her.
“You want me to make dinner?” said Maddy.
“No, of course not!” said Caleb. “It’s your first night here at my place, I’m going to be the one making you dinner. What do you want to eat?”
“But you’ve never tried my cooking,” said Maddy. “Aunt Matilda taught me. She’s a terrific cook and she taught me pretty much all of her tricks.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to just rest and let me handle dinner?” said Caleb.
“I’m sure,” said Maddy with a smile. “Besides, I want to thank you. You came back to America for me. I know you wanted to take some time off from work, but you didn’t have to take me in. You’re not my dad, after all.”

; “Nonsense,” said Caleb. “If you’re doing this to thank me then don’t bother. I’m not doing you any favors. You deserve to be here, you deserve to be with me.”
Maddy laughed and said, “Fine, I won’t cook dinner to thank you. I’ll cook it to make you happy. How about that?”
Caleb smiled and said, “Sounds good to me.”
Maddy got to work preparing dinner. She had decided to make homemade pizza using her Aunt’s special recipe. Caleb seemed really enthusiastic about it when he smelled it being cooked.
While they were eating dinner, Maddy decided that it was time to talk to Caleb.
“Caleb, I’d like to have that discussion you talked about in the car,” said Maddy.
Caleb did not look at her but chewed his slice thoughtfully as he said, “Alright.”
“Look,” said Maddy, “I know that our relationship isn’t exactly ‘father-daughter’. You were my stepdad for a year or so until mom died. Then you were just Caleb.”
Caleb nodded, still not looking Maddy in the eye.
“Over the nine years that we spent talking,” said Maddy, “I slowly began to see you as the perfect guy. You became my ideal. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?”
Caleb got up all of a sudden and walked away. Maddy stood up and walked towards him. He did not turn around to face her.
“I can’t have this conversation with you,” said Caleb. “It’s going to destroy what little resolve I have left.”
Maddy’s heart almost jumped out of her chest. Resolve? That meant that he was struggling with his impulses too. He felt about her much in the same way that she felt about him. She reached out and put a hand on his shoulder. She was pleased when he did not shrug it away.
