CARL SAFINA grew up loving the ocean. He is a recipient of a MacArthur “genius” Fellowship and a Pew Scholar’s Award in Conservation and the Environment. His first book, Song for the Blue Ocean, won him a Lannan Literary Award. Safina earned his Ph.D. studying seabirds and later founded the National Audubon Society’s Living Oceans Program. He is a Visiting Fellow at Yale University.
