Remnant of Forgiveness Page 16

“I, too,” she whispered, unable to trust her voice.

Piano music drifted from downstairs in prelude to “The Wedding March,” and her soon-to-be father-in-law appeared and offered his elbow. “You look lovely,” he assured her. “Let’s not keep poor Nelson waiting any longer.”

The scent of pine drifted upstairs from the long-needled evergreen the family had decorated last night. Large poinsettia plants lifted brilliant faces from several spots throughout the downstairs, lending an even more festive air, as did the tall red candles burning so brightly on the mantel. One by one, the women started their measured descent down the stairs whose railings sported red velvet bows and holly.

Mary, trailing a few steps behind, reached the landing, her hand on Dad Thomas’s black-suited arm.

Her gaze immediately sought Nelson’s and almost melted from the depth of love and admiration she saw in his light brown eyes. In his new charcoal pinstripe, he looked tall and resplendent, standing beside the lovely Christmas tree hung with tinsel and shining ornaments. She couldn’t help believing she was getting the better end of things. . .not only in her betrothed’s masculine appearance but in his spiritual maturity, which would benefit her throughout their life together.

As the traditional wedding piece rang out, Mary smiled and started toward the man who, by example, had demonstrated God’s forgiveness and love, making her whole again.

Never once taking his eyes from her, Nelson smiled and stepped to her side, enfolding her hand in his with a reassuring squeeze. Then, together, they turned to face the minister.
