He grinned and disappeared back through the eager onlookers.
MOM MET US AT the car. “I figured you would be a bit longer,” she said.
“Dr. Carrison told them we needed to rest. Martin’s arranging a press conference as soon as he can get me to agree on a date. He says he wants to put up a billboard proclaiming Sparrow as the home of the Black Rider.” I grimaced at the thought.
Madelyn squeezed my hand. “At least you know how much everyone appreciates what you’ve done.”
“Kids will flock from everywhere, hoping for a sighting of you,” Mom said from the front seat.
“Thanks, Mom,” I told her.
She smiled at us in the rearview mirror. “I’m just glad you’re both okay and the Black Rider is done riding for good.”
Madelyn and I exchanged a glance. She smiled. I put my arm around her shoulders and she leaned against me. I took a deep breath of her vanilla scent and closed my eyes. The car hit a bump and I heard my helmet roll over in the trunk. A smile touched my lips.
