  Prologue

Hannah Warren finished off yet another drink as she listened to Selena recap her courtship with the Johnson brothers. Hearing how love had entered a friend’s life was inspiring. She looked around the table where the five of them sat in the middle of Fannie’s Old Time Saloon for their weekly girls’ night out. She saw the contentment on all of their faces and couldn’t hold back a deep sigh as Selena’s story came to an end.

Selena smiled confidently at her audience. “I’m sorry to say this, ladies…but I don’t think you have a chance at winning. Between the truck, the B and B, outdoor tent sex, and the games we played at the cabin, I don’t think I can be topped.”

“Damn. I can’t believe that game! It was so freakin’ sexy,” Lana said, shaking her head, and Selena grinned.

“Well, your story about the cabin certainly ranks up there, but since Wyatt and Austin are the ones who set that place up with all the hooks and chains, I’m pretty sure I can top yours,” Hannah chimed in, and Selena leaned back.

“I’m going to order another round before you start talking, Hannah.” Casey jumped up and waved to the bartender.

Selena and Ellie were bantering good-naturedly when the bartender came by with a tray of shots, and Hannah grabbed one eagerly, following their girls’-night rules.

“Yes, shots!” Selena hooted, grabbing the small glass cup. “Tequila! This night is getting better.”

“Oh, please. You talk big for a lightweight, Selena Easton,” Lana accused.

“I’ll take that as a challenge, Lana Dupree. Let’s do this, ladies.”

Hannah lifted her shot glass, joined the others in a quick cheer, and threw it back, quickly chasing it down with a lime.

Selena clearly thought her story was unbeatable, because when she pulled the lime from her mouth, she leaned casually back in her chair, saying, “Okay, Hannah, your turn.”

Hannah eyed the basket and the large purple vibrator that seemed to have her name on it. Oh yes, wait until they heard her story!

  Chapter One

  Fourteen Years Earlier

“I heard they took Becky Williams out to their cabin last weekend,” Selena said, giving Hannah a sympathetic glance.

“Don’t give it a second thought, Hannah,” Rex said, taking a swig of his beer that they had gotten from his older brother. “Besides, you’re heading off to college in Boulder. I’m sure there are plenty of men there to take your mind off of Wyatt and Austin Cahill.”

“But I don’t want anyone else. What does Becky have that I don’t have?” Hannah asked, really wanting to know the answer. She held her palms facing the bonfire, hoping to ward off the chill that had nothing to do with the weather.

All through high school, Austin Cahill had been the one boy she coveted. He had been captain of the football team, led the debate team to state, and was the hottest boy in Spirit, Colorado. There was also the fact that he and his brother liked to share their girls, at least according to the rumors, but that didn’t bother Hannah in the least. She desired Wyatt Cahill as well, although if her father had known where her thoughts had g
one, he’d have probably purchased a new shotgun.

“She puts out?” Selena said, although it was formed as a question that everyone already knew the answer to. Becky had pretty much had sex with every boy in Spirit, and was making her way south. “What do they do up in that cabin anyway?”

“You don’t want to know,” Rex said, tossing his bottle in the metal trashcan that stood outside the circle of the bonfire. “Besides, it doesn’t matter what they do. Hannah needs to face the fact that Austin and Wyatt are not the settling-down type.”

“Did I say I wanted to have a serious relationship with them?” Hannah asked. “What if I just want to experience their cabin?”

“Hannah, they’re into kinky sex,” Rex admitted. “We all know you’re a virgin, along with having a protective father. Wyatt wouldn’t touch you with a ten-foot pole.”

“Way to hurt her feelings, stud.” Selena patted Hannah’s back.

“Just because I haven’t had sex yet, doesn’t mean I’m not into kinky,” Hannah said, defending herself. “Besides, what does me being a virgin have to do with it?”

“Because you’re the type of girl they would marry, not just fool around with,” Rex said, shaking his head in frustration. Hannah could tell he was getting tired of this conversation. Whenever they came to their weekly bonfires, Hannah couldn’t help but bring the Cahill brothers into the conversation. “Give them a few years, and I guarantee they’ll ask you out. Hell, every time Wyatt comes to these things, he never takes his eyes off of you.”

“That’s true,” Selena said, agreeing with Rex. “I think he’s waiting for Austin to grow up a bit.”

While Selena and Rex debated on why Austin and Wyatt were the way they were, Hannah caught a glimpse of Austin’s red lettermen’s jacket. He was having a beer with some fellow football players that Hannah only knew by name. She really didn’t hang out with the popular crowd, although with the town being so small, it seemed that she had friends in each clique that popped up. She was studying him, taking in his brown hair that curled around his face as the wind played with the strands. He really was handsome, with his brown eyes reminding her of her favorite chocolate bar. Her heart skipped a beat when those same eyes looked up and caught her staring.

Quickly, she glanced down at the soda can in her hand. Hannah really wasn’t in the scene of drinking but loved the Friday night bonfires that seemed to have become a tradition for the teenagers around town. She hoped Austin thought she had been looking at something behind him, because nothing was worse than having someone know you liked them when they didn’t like you. It made things awkward.

“Hey, I gotta run,” Rex announced, interrupting her thoughts. “Josh just pulled into the parking lot. You girls all right to get home?”

“I’m good,” Selena answered, digging her car keys out of her jeans. “Lana is taking some college course online, hoping to get some extra credits before her senior year. I told her I would meet up with her at the Spirit Café before I head back home. Do you need a ride, Hannah?”

“No, thanks,” Hannah said, declining Selena’s offer. “I drove my dad’s truck, and he’s expecting me home soon.”

They said their good-byes, with Selena promising to visit over the summer, as her vacation with her aunt was almost over. Giving her one last hug, Hannah made the two steps over to the garbage can to throw her soda away. She tried to tamp down the depression that was setting in over Austin and Wyatt taking Becky to their cabin last weekend but wasn’t doing a good job of it. Maybe Rex was right. She was going to college in Boulder and there would be tons of boys there.

Turning around, Hannah bumped into a hard body and immediately brought her hands up to steady herself. Strong arms wrapped around her. She looked up into Wyatt Cahill’s brown eyes, so like his brother’s. For a second, neither moved, until Hannah realized she had been holding her breath. Releasing the air in her lungs, a white mist rose in between them, and when it cleared, she was left staring at the other half of the duo she was so enamored with.

“Sorry, I didn’t think you would turn around that quickly. Do you have a minute? I wanted to talk to you about something.”

Hannah tried to get her scrambled thoughts together. Did Wyatt just say that he sought her out to speak with her? She knew her mouth was gaping open like a fish, but she couldn’t help herself. Wyatt Cahill, the more serious of the two brothers, was standing in front of her looking every bit as handsome as Austin. In fact, Wyatt had a more intimidating presence that, instead of making her feel scared, made her feel protected.

“S-sure,” Hannah answered, mentally kicking herself for stuttering. She didn’t want to sound like a schoolgirl with a crush. She wanted to sound like a woman who was starting a new chapter in her life, which hopefully included them. After all, she didn’t have to go to Boulder for college. She could stay here and attend the community college a town over. Maybe they’d take her to the cabin, too, because if the rumors were true, they liked to do all kinds of kinky things there.

“Look, I know that Austin hasn’t been treating you the way he should be. But you need to understand, we are still young and want to enjoy what life has to offer.”

Hannah scrunched her brow up, not understanding what he was saying. She wasn’t ugly by any means. She had dated a few boys on and off during her high school years, and they told her they thought she was pretty. Hannah thought her hair was her best feature, as it hung down to the middle of her back like a sheet of black silk. She always felt that the color of her hair made her green eyes stand out more. So what was it that the other girls had that she didn’t?

Hannah remembered when they were little and would run around their adjoining ranches, getting into all kinds of mayhem. She had followed them everywhere, always curious as to the trouble they seemed to cause. Then on the turn of a dime, they suddenly started to keep their distance. Now that she looked back on it, Wyatt and Austin seemed to have gotten caught up in their social life upon entering high school and didn’t have the time of day for her. It hurt then, just as it did now.

“I’m messing this up, aren’t I?” Wyatt asked with a nervous laugh. Hannah felt a brief sense of satisfaction that he seemed to be as uneasy as she was. “You know what? I’m just going to say this straight out, and you take it the way you want. We like you, and when you come back from college, we can see settling down with a girl like you. Family is important to us. But right now, we want to be able to play the field before we have to take over the Double Spur Ranch for our dads.”

Hannah felt her face flame up in anger. It was rare that she got this worked up this quickly, but knowing they would take someone else to the cabin instead of her was beyond frustrating. “So Becky Williams is okay to fuck at your special cabin, but I’m not?”

“Keep your voice low,” Wyatt warned, glancing around to make sure no one overheard them. Hannah hoped that they did. “And watch your language.”

“Why? You said I could take your words any way I wanted, right? Well, I’m offended.”

If there was one thing her father had taught her, it was to stand up for herself. Having lost her mother to cancer when she was a child, it had always been her and her father against the world. Right now, she felt like she was alone and did her best to fight back the tears trying to make their presence known. Hannah wouldn’t give Wyatt the satisfaction of seeing her cry.

“You think I’m going to wait for you while you and Austin fuck every girl in town? And what makes you think that’s not what I want, too? A quick fuck?” Hannah knew that every time she said the word fuck, it caused Wyatt to flinch. Good. He deserved some payback for what he was implying. She didn’t cuss often, but knowing it caused this effect on him satisfied something deep inside of her. If this was the only way to get a reaction out of him, then she would add a boatload of new words to her vocabulary. “Why would you think I would wait four years to come back to you and Austin, be the girl that settles down with you, and give you this all-important family?”

“First off, if you keep using that language, you’ll find out exactly what we do at our cabin,” Wyatt said, his voice dropping low in that tenor she found so sexy. It was a good thing she had on a fleece jacket, because she didn’t want him to see the shiver that passed over her body. “Second, you’re more important to us than a quick lay. Hell, Hannah, we’ve known you since we were in diapers. I’m messing this up, and this is not the way I thought this conversation would go. I just think it would be better for you if you go to nursing school, get your degree, and then come back home. We’ll all be ready for something more serious, and we can see where that leads us.”

“You’re just saying that because you’re scared of what my father might think,” Hannah said, pointing out a known fact. Every boy in Spirit was afraid of her father, as he tended to be a little overprotective of her. “Well, don’t worry about my dad. You can tell Austin he doesn’t have to worry about me lusting after him either, because you set me straight. So go ahead, fuck all the girls you want. Maybe one of them can give you that family you want later in life, because it certainly won’t be me.”

Hannah hadn’t realized that he was still holding on to her jacket or that her voice had risen with each word she spoke, until she went to walk away from him. Jerking her arm, Hannah was able to free herself from his grip. Not caring that everyone was staring at them, Hannah held her head high as she made her way to her dad’s truck. She saw Austin out of the corner of her eye start to walk toward her, but something stopped him. She was glad, because if anyone tried to speak with her now, she’d probably burst into tears.
