  About me. The Author

I was born Oct 1939--Libra--on a farm in a coal mining area of Westmoreland County (east of Pittsburgh). I was the oldest of six children--two checked out so far. Poor and carefree, we ran the hills and woods in our bare feet all summer long.

When I was about six years old, my father-in his fifties--a life long miner, had several strokes and lost most of the use of his right side along with four Slovak languages. That left our unskilled mother, in her thirties, to provide for the family. The carefree part of our lives went away.

In 1951, we moved to Greensburg, Westmoreland County seat, across from an old polo field, Route 119 N. Never saw a horse there.

At fifteen, I quit school to work on a dairy farm, $80.00 a month room and board, to buy groceries for the family left behind. Eventually my younger brothers stepped up, and in 1958 I enlisted in the Army, Military Police, ending up in West Germany, Bavaria, Munich, Augsburg area, 24th Infantry Division for two plus years. I could see the Alps on a clear day.

Discharged Jan, 1961, in Germany, I stayed in Europe for ten years selling encyclopedias and correspondence courses to the military.

Looking back, I can see my writing efforts started doing patrol and incident reports--never enough space on the unmentionable forms.

In 1971, I returned with an English wife and three children to the USA--a different USA than the one I departed from. If you lived through those years you'll understand. If not, it's in the history books how drastically different the country was from 1958 USA. We lived in Tampa Florida and Los Angeles before returning to PA in 1973. There's a local saying, born in PA, die in PA, which may have truth to it.

During the seventies I did three years at The Community College of Beaver County earning an Associates Degree in Administration of Justice (1976). Two years later, I transferred to the University of Pittsburgh and continued my studies in the same field until 1980 finishing the credits required for a Bachelors degree. During that time my wife decided to return to England with her two children. I raised my oldest son--from a prior marriage--myself. Shortly after high school he enlisted in the Army ending up in South Korea.

The local economy--based on steel--went south in the early eighties. Beaver County lost half of its population. I worked with an unemployed committee to help people over that hurdle.

Then I spent seven years as a hermit, continuing my life-long study of meta-physics, which I began at age thirteen after seeing the people in the strict Protestant religion I'd been brought up in, not walking their talk. I initially ran across an ad about the Rosicrucian Order in a magazine I read at the Greensburg Greyhound station--before the manager ran me off. He complained that he wasn't running a library branch for the Sowatskey brothers.

I’ve studied every area of Meta-Physics I've ever run across. I reaffirmed my conclusion--during those years--that you'll walk that last mile to your final destiny alone, so you'd best be on good terms with yourself.

I supported myself doing various blue collar jobs, using the skills I learned in High School Vocational Agriculture class. The fifties farmer, which I'd planned to be then, needed to be self sufficient in any problem area, mostly because farm income--especially in PA--was marginal

In the late nineties, I started writing seriously using old typewriters. Then I ran across the Beaver Valley Writer's Guild and was gifted an old Radio Shack computer. I joined them, presenting something new at every weekly meeting for 12 years plus. To date, Nov 2011, I've published two novels on Kindle and will list three more with them in a few months, four, military sci/fi and a western. There are lots more projects in various stages of completion. I find Asimov's idea of working on more projects than one at the same time flows for me, also. Try it. It might work for you.

If you have any comments, or are a starting writer with difficulties, contact me at [email protected]. I'll be glad to hear from you. Pardon the web site, it's being worked on.

When the cold winds blow down from the north,

When you stand and shiver half frozen seeing the enemy

  Approach.

  You have two choices:

You can turn tail, run away and try to hide

  Or

You can run to attack the enemy

  Who knows, you might win

If not, your suffering was short.

Summation of events in Book I and Book II

In Book I, three Civil War veterans and their ladies are pulled out of 1885 Colorado, shortly before their natural deaths, by the Elders, a group of superior beings, who move freely through time, space, and realities.

One of them, a nurse, Thelma, an Earth native, had the mind set that could be exposed to data and events in different time periods without going crazy. She experienced two hundred years of banging around Galaxies: and returned to her companions on Earth two weeks later (their time) now allowed to access a Seed ship enclosed in a huge vessel called an ARK; after a side trip of twenty years to pick up a skeleton crew. The Civil War veterans, and their families, if any, who were recruited, alive, or their essences, after the moment of their death, were to crew the ARK.

The enemy, IL ANNU KI, fourteen foot tall giants, with a membrane in their foreheads, who had (behind the scenes) long since enslaved Earth, interfered with their recruitment activities.

Thelma, now not having the luxury of a gradual gathering of forces, brings her immediate companions from a 1885 mindset to the level of Technology existent on the ARK. They, and the non-Earth
people Thelma gathered, resolve to do away with this enemy.

To accomplish this, they enlisted the aid of: The Rangers, a group who tries to bring order to the Universe; the Brenesi, a people who Jill, a Second Federation Marine championed; the Essences, a group of immortal beings; the Second Federation leaders; the Regs, eight foot tall bears with human like faces hands and feet; and the AIs, a tall thin created group who were the stewards of an ancient Germanic construction/manufacturing/shipyard complex.

After a successful battle in the Reg solar system (despite many casualties), the local ANNU KI were destroyed.

Afterward, the AI complex relocated through time to the Reg solar system and placed a shield around the system's home planet.

Captain Rafe Berger; one of the original six, while en-route back to Earth, learned from the AIs, the actual complexity of the task facing him and his forces, that they could not defeat the ANNU KI with their present bodies. Thelma, (who had remained on Earth to command forces there), upon learning these facts, asked for volunteers for a special mission. Everyone on ARK IV, Rafe's ship, volunteered.

In the middle of the above events, Rafe, through regression, learned he had been part of a Terra Forming mission from the planet Phaeton (now our asteroid belt) to stabilize the Earth.

All events had a special immediacy. Before 2050, Planet Nebu, on its epileptical 6,000 year orbit out beyond Pluto and back, again threatened Earth with magnetic field distortions, earthquakes, and destruction from 200 mph plus wind storms.

  In Book II,

A three million year leap in human evolution, engineered by the Essences, resulted in the Volunteers. They are nine foot tall, with 400 pound dense bodies, short hair, square faces, and a bulb in their forehead to sense and manipulate wavelengths directly.

The first Volunteer, Rafe Berger, has his personality duplicated. The original body carries on as before, while the new Volunteer body becomes Tildore Secallo, the Phaeton identity that he has recalled from his distant past.

He, and his fellow Volunteers gradually man a fleet of Weapons Balls (small moons), and Carriers, left in storage by the Phaeton people. His forces hunt and kill the ANNU KI up and down time, using one continent Earth (geologically speaking) as a general space/time reference.

Other supporting groups are the remnants of the Phaeton people, and the remnants of the Dragon Riders, who hid with the Phaeton people in the Himalayan Mountains for millions of years. A secondary war front is opened by contact with an ex-marshal, Jason Dillard, in 1848 Santa Fe, who is involved in efforts to prevent the Civil War.

Betty, an Essence, opens still another war front on Moneslakia - A Rim World -after locating a stranded ANNU KI who has been creating bodies based on snake DNA.

Ted, a genius Volunteer, who invents an Erasure (it dissolves anything), makes our forces ready to confront the ANNU KI ships embedded in planet Earth.

With the help of Tom, an ex U.N. peacekeeper, now a long distance truck driver, and a Chinese Secret Agent, Lin Ti, our forces succeed in sabotaging the South Pole ANNU KI ship with lead altered gold.

A Special Events Platoon, humans evolved even beyond Volunteers, is called in. They travel through time with only their personal weapon belt generated force fields. They go back the time track of the enemy ships, killing anything they meet, and capture many ships.

Due to some sleuth work, Tom and Lin discover Phaeton evolution came about with help from a group located near Polaris. Agents are sent to Polaris where they make contact with people from the First Federation. A large task force goes to investigate.

Nebu is destroyed by the rangers. They harness a sun and use it as a weapon.

  Prolog

I walked around the large circular table located on a patio near Central Lake. I suppose I should have thought of shade. I'm sure the technicians could come up with something which wouldn't interfere with the 3-D beam projected holographic bodies. But then, were the projected body’s eyes light sensitive?

  I WANT TO KNOW, PLEASE

  NO

Good. Now I knew. I made a note, mentally, to send a Thank You missive to the Phaeton Captain who dreamt up this, -- improvement. The conference attendees slept in their own beds. They would assimilate what had been covered when they awoke. Admiral Secallo still searched for the person who considered us short on miles. That had become slightly worn out joke by now. The decision to implement didn't concern miles, rather security concerns, and out of theater time limitations.

Secallo and his staff were here. Prestrillo came too. They were trying out their legs in the neighboring shops. Rafe and his people were here, also Jim's people. Who the hell wasn't here? My Nerre', and her nine foot tall counterpart had hit it off right away. The rest would adjust, but then, maybe not the Regs. The twins, their father, Torme and Rafe were inseparable. I promised myself to twist that bitch M.Verdai's neck, when I next met her in a real body. Arks II, III, and V, were represented. My speech outline grew shorter by the minute. Maybe I should just say, 'go get em.' No, they deserved more than that for their sacrifices.

They wandered back to the patio and took places. I soon realized the damn table should have been larger. Fortunately smaller fringing tables provided additional seats.

I walked to the podium. "I won't hold up your sight-seeing but a moment. You've all been briefed thoroughly. You've all agreed with the decision to proceed. I just want to make a few announcements. I am personally volunteering. You Volunteers know my travail over this decision. I'm counting on you advising me on your coping method. Secondly, we will establish our main base near Polaris. From there, we will recruit from the entire known universe. When we think our military might is sufficient to turn the tide, we will strike with no mercy. However, keep in mind campaigns go smoother with local leaders commanding them. Think recruitment. Funnel your ideas through Admiral Prestrillo's office. We'll discuss organization when our combined fleet arrives at Polaris, or possibly before departing from ancient Earth. Now go party. You're all heroes.

  Chapter One

  Thelma

Erlo approached me, "We need to talk. I've arranged privacy at the Café."

  "Fine, carry on."

We walked into the Café Royal, which had also been fitted with projectors. The owner, Jacqueline, said, "Close the door when you're done." and left.

I filled a large mug with coffee behind the counter, and then we sat at a two person table upon which a tube topped by a small ball and held upright with three legs sat.

  "What's so secretive, Erlo?"

"Just sit, and grab onto your chair seat with one hand, then touch the ball and quickly grab your seat with the other hand."

I did as directed. With no warning I found myself suspended in space, looking down at a planet. Every kind of installation orbited around it. Before I could start to catalog and categorize I found myself whisked to another planet, then another, all essentially the same. Light flooded the night side of them, activity buzzed. My ride went on and on. I forgot where I sat. My internal counter went up to forty nine when I ceased to move so rapidly. I started to admire the road system layout of this planet, when I resumed motion. I knew we were going back over the same route, but in a different time. Most of the orbiting structures were gone. No lights showed on the planets. Shortly after I got back to the first planet visited, I found myself in the Café. I gradually relaxed and peeled my fingers away from the chair seat. I looked around the Café, focusing on the corners of the room to, reestablish myself in it

I tentatively reached for my coffee cup. Half to my surprise I could grasp it. After a sip of coffee, now stone cold, I demanded, "What did I just see?"

"The First Federation. My HQ sent this instrument. You need to know some basic facts."

"Thankfully someone knows something. The Seed Ship won't provide me with answers, yet. I'm assuming I'm not askin
g the right questions?"

"I can't comment on that. I'll tell you what I do know, which will curl your hair. There existed a First Federation. You just saw it. It should not be confused with my Second Federation. The First Federation consisted of forty nine planets in thirteen solar systems. The technical evolution plane equaled the ARKs. The capital, named Nethroes, on a planet of the same name influenced most of the known Universe. Then, somebody attacked. The result you've seen on your trip back. From your reports of Phaeton, you'll get reality, same thing, magnified. Populations went crazy, became destructive, planetary populations in any case."

"Wait a moment,” I interrupted. "You're saying forty nine planets went crazy all at once?"

"Precisely. It took a few years to realize the degradation couldn't be stopped by people in the middle of chaos. That's when the orbital factories, hospitals, shipyards, and all else flying, except the Orbital Forts, disengaged and left for parts unknown to ride out the effect. Quarantine protocol didn't allow any one from the planets into any facility. The orbital complex around Nethroes, which consisted of Hospitals, shipyards, Hydro farms and the main Federation military Garrison, went to the edge of the Universe. It's now known as Ranger HQ. You can go there someday and study the history."

"I'm trying to get my mind around this. What happened to the rest of the planet's orbital installations?"

"We don't know. Events happen here and there, which could be them, but we don't exactly know. We almost don't want to know. With the quarantine declared, no one left. Many tried. They were blasted out of existence by automated preprogrammed orbital Forts. The whole area of space had mine fields, warning beacons, mental disruptors, everything possible to keep travelers away. The Forts prevented landings as well as takeoffs. Whomever your people contacted has this situation as a background. Beware."
