Cat's Quest Page 43

by Roman Prokofiev

“Mister Oleg Rashidov?” The girl asked, examining me closely.

“Yes, that’s me. How can I help?”

“Hello, Mister Rashidov!” The girl said with a radiant smile. “My name is Lana, and I am the senior marketing manager for the Sphere of the Worlds project! These are my assistants!”

“Anton,” the Slavic-looking guy said, introducing himself.

“Isao,” The Asian dude said, smiling.

They seemed more like thugs than assistants, especially the Japanese one, going by the swagger that befitted a trained fighter. Had they already tracked me down because of my conversation with the Magister? Impossible; too little time had passed.

“Apologies for the late visit, Mister Rashidov,” The girl continued. “We’ve just arrived from New Tokyo! May we come in?”

  “Of course.”

We went into the drawing room. When they sat, I indicated that I was listening as well as I could.

“First of all, Mister Rashidov, we would like to express our apologies on behalf of the company!” Anton said. “Your account was unfairly banned. We quickly fixed that mistake, and the persons responsible were punished. Unfortunately, things like this happen... Here, we have a present for you.” He put a fat bottle of amber liquid on the coffee table, flashing the golden label. I was surprised to see that it was cognac, one of the best brands. These guys clearly wanted something from me; I doubted they were visiting the homes of all “unfairly banned” players, handing out elite alcohol.

“Oh, and some souvenirs,” Isao put a parcel full of various Sphere-branded gifts next to the bottle: a digital diary, a calendar, notebooks... He also pulled out a fat wad of agreements of some kind, the top one decorated with the company logo.

  “Thank you.”

“I see you weren’t expecting us,” Lana said. “I won’t keep you waiting. The reason for our visit is the same issue that led to your account being blocked. It’s the item you found, the sword.”

“We would like to work with you, Mister Rashidov,” she continued. “Our company would like to make you an offer you can’t refuse!”

“Hmm. And what are you offering?” I asked, surprised.

“What are we offering you? You won’t need to do much. As for us...” The girl demonstrated a dazzling smile and crossed her legs. “Well, everything. We’ll give you everything that you ask for.”

  EPILOGUE

The hinges creaked softly. For appearances’ sake, I knocked the bronze ring against the door and stepped inside. Nothing had changed. The room was still poorly lit. There was a huge dusty globe of Dorsa in the corner, lots of potions, books hidden inside glass cases, and scrolls in wooden cabinets. Nobody was standing behind the polished counter. A big black cat sleeping on the back of a ragged unicorn opened one eye, slowly stood up, arching its back, and clawed at the hide. He greeted me with a loud meow.

I came up to the counter and put down the magnificent bouquet that I had just purchased from a flower girl around the corner (half a gold piece, daylight robbery!)

“Frederic!” A young blonde girl in a green white-sleeved dress rushed out from behind a small door that led into the back rooms. She was holding an ink pot and quill.

“Oh dear! Sir Cat!” Lovely dimples appeared on her cheeks as she spoke. A second later, Weldy Nialit had her arms around my neck, her legs dangling as I lifted her.

“You’re a hero, Sir Cat, but let’s not forget about propriety,” she said a minute later, forcing me to release her waist. “Don’t forget, I’m an old-fashioned girl! But I’m still happy to see you!” She smiled a sincere smile.

“How were things here?” I asked.

“Scary, especially when we heard news about the defeat...” the girl confessed. “But the enemy never came, and then, the Err returned. They say, you and your friends saved him! Is it true?”

“You could say that,” I replied, caressing the golden circle with an Eyrian barley ear that hung from the chain around my neck. It was a faction pendant, one of the rewards bestowed on us by Endved Elyon after his return to Dan-na-Eyre. My reputation with Eyre had grown by a lot, and I had even received the title, “Friend of the Eyre Nation”. Too bad that faction reputation and reputation with individual NPCs were not one and the same thing.

“I barely took part in the action, the clan devised the plan.”

“Oh, stop it!” Weldy smiled. “Thank you for the flowers! I’ve never gotten anything that beautiful, believe me!” Standing on tiptoes, she kissed me on the cheek.

“Will you tell me the story, Lord Cat? I’ll make some tea!”

“Yes,” I smiled. “Of course, I will.”
