Dangerous Undertaking Page 22

by Mark de Castrique

  “You ready?” growled Tommy Lee.

I turned around to find him only a few yards behind me. Charlie was nowhere to be seen. “Are we going to have company?” I asked.

“No. Charlie is leading Ned out to fresh feed.”

  “What did he say?”

“He said he misses his horse. He asked me to tell you good-bye and he’d be happy for you to drop by sometime.”

“Then the case is still open?”

Tommy Lee kept walking toward the patrol car. “No, Barry. The case is closed. Fred Pryor was killed by Leroy Jackson.”

I didn’t say anything, just limped silently beside him. He stopped at the trunk, turned around and leaned against it.

“That’s what the media is claiming,” he said. “That’s what everybody in the county believes. And who can say justice hasn’t been served?”
