Finding His Omega (Sweet Beginnings Bakery Book 3)

It wasn’t long before Gavin felt a familiar pressure building deep within him. “I’m close.” He gasped as one particularly deep thrust sent sparks shooting up his spine.
“Me too.” He heard Connor say, and Gavin reached down to take Connor’s member back into his hand.
It only took a few strokes before Connor was spilling his load all over Gavin’s hand and Connor’s own stomach. The clenching of his hole soon took Gavin over the edge as well, and Gavin buried himself deep as he began to come.
Gavin eventually had to pull out with a groan and toss the condom in the trash. He got up to go get a washcloth from the bathroom when Connor made a whining sound from the back of his throat and made a grabbing motion in Gavin’s direction.
“Come back.” Connor’s voice was scratchy and he sounded exhausted.
“Shh, I’ll be right back.” Gavin bent down to press a kiss to Connor’s forehead before quickly heading to the bathroom. He didn’t want to leave Connor, but he also had to clean both of them up so that they wouldn’t be sticky and uncomfortable in the morning.
As soon as Gavin was done wiping them both down, Connor pulled Gavin back onto the bed and immediately cuddled up against his chest.
Gavin couldn’t fight back the grin that spread across his face as he gently dragged his fingers through Connor’s hair. In the moment he wasn’t sure why he had been so reluctant to do this before. Having Connor warm and tucked up against him was nothing like anything he had ever experienced, they just fit perfectly together like no other person Gavin had ever slept with.
As he drifted off to sleep, Gavin couldn’t help but think about how excited he was for this to be his future.
CHAPTER 10 - CONNOR
IT HAD SEEMED like forever before Connor had been able to get Gavin to sleep with him. The alpha had seemed to be content in his role as an overprotective, cuddly, guard dog, but after their first night together it was like the flood gates had opened.
Connor couldn’t seem to keep his hands off of Gavin and Gavin appeared to be much the same. Connor certainly wasn’t going to complain. He couldn’t remember the last time that he had had this much sex, and this much good sex. He and Theo had been going through a bit of a dry spell when…
No, he wasn’t going to go there. He was happy with what he had with Gavin, it wouldn’t do him any good to dwell on the past.
He must have spaced out, because Leon said something that Connor didn’t quite hear, and Connor felt himself jolt back to reality.
“You really like this boy don’t you?” Connor could hear the humor in Leon’s voice and he tried not to roll his eyes at his brother. Telling Leon about Gavin had been a mistake, but Leon and his parents had been almost stifling in their worry over Connor. If he told Leon that he at least had a friend and someone to watch out for him he thought it might get him off his back.
Apparently not.
He had accidentally let out one night that he and Gavin were seeing each other, in the carnal sense, and Leon just wouldn’t let it go.
“You make it sound like we’re still in elementary school.” Connor rolled his eyes. “He treats me well, it’s just a bit of fun.” Well, Connor wanted it to be more, but he felt that telling Leon that would only concern him more. Connor was too afraid to break this easy way of being that he and Gavin had, having the talk was probably the fastest way to complicate things that Connor could think of.
Anyway, it wasn’t like it was anything all that much more than casual. Connor couldn’t really see Gavin staying around after he had the baby, but that was okay. Connor was content with what they had for now, he could deal with everything else when the time came.
“A bit of fun.” The skepticism in Leon’s voice was thick. “Connor, I know you. You just got out of a seven year relationship, you don’t just do fun.”
Connor wanted to protest, but Leon’s words hit home and hit something that he hadn’t even really thought about before. He brought his head down to rest atop his forearms that were crossed on the table. “Shit.”
He took in a deep breath. “Leon, I think I’m having feelings.”
“You’re just now realizing it?” Leon’s voice was incredulous. “You’ve been head over heels for this guy for months. I thought it was infatuation and just a rebound but…”
Connor could just imagine Leon doing his signature head shake and looking down at the phone disapprovingly. It wasn’t that Connor was just now realizing what he felt for Gavin, but it had been hard to truly grasp the depth of what he felt.
This wasn’t just a fling, or even casual dating. With Gavin there was the potential for so much more.
“What am I going to do?” Connor groaned into the table.
“You’re going to ask your man out.” Leon said firmly. “He wouldn’t be offended at that, would he?”
“No.” Connor didn’t know for sure, but Gavin certainly wasn’t exactly the most traditional alpha. He made Connor feel safe and protected, but at the same time he showed no hesitance at Connor’s level of independence and habits of talking back or taking charge. Gavin worked at a bakery ran by omegas for heaven’s sake, Connor really couldn’t see him being the kind to be strict about enforcing traditional roles.
“But…” Leon prompted. “I’m sensing that there’s some caveat here.”
“But.” Connor began. “I don’t know if he feels the same way.”
That really was the problem. Gavin liked Connor, that at least was evident, but Connor couldn’t be sure of the extent of Gavin’s feelings. He couldn’t know if they matched Connor’s own.
Connor sat up and looked at the phone even though he knew that Leon couldn’t see him. “I’m going to have a baby Leon, and it’s not his. I don’t know if…”
Connor really didn’t know how to put everything he was afraid of into words.
He liked Gavin, he didn’t love him yet but the potential was there. He knew that he had just gotten out of a serious relationship, but being with Gavin didn’t seem like it too soon, and being with Gavin didn’t feel like Connor was just using him as a rebound at all.
Connor had been a wreck immediately after the wedding that never was, but he would have been a complete and utter disaster once his parents and Leon had left if Gavin hadn’t been there for him. Gavin had been able to help Connor pick up the pieces, and even though the ache for Theo was still there, it was far duller than Connor ever thought it could be.
If it had been any other circumstance, Connor would have gone for it.
Gavin was polite and kind and an incredibly hard worker. He would make an incredible father.
That’s where the problem lay.
Connor was expecting, and while he knew that Gavin knew that, he wasn’t sure if Gavin would be completely able to accept the reality of raising another alpha’s child. It was one thing to be okay with it in theory, it was completely another to be okay with in practice.
Everything that Connor knew about Gavin pointed to the alpha not caring in the least, but still…
Connor just couldn’t shed that last little bit of doubt. He had thought that Theo was his everything, but he had been so, so wrong.
That experience had broken him.
He couldn’t be wrong about Gavin in the same way. Connor wouldn’t be able to handle that much heartbreak, especially not with a small child.
They had to talk and work out just what they were. Connor just didn’t know how to bring it up. He didn’t want to be the one to initiate the conversation that might lead to his heart being broken yet again.
Leon had patiently waited out Connor’s internal crisis, but Connor could hear his brother sigh through the phone.
“Look Connor.” Leon’s voice was patient but firm. “If he’s anything like what you told me, he’ll be okay with it. If not, he doesn’t deserve you.” Leon’s voice suddenly got softer. “Either way, you need to talk to him sooner rather than later. I don’t want to see you get your heart broken.”
“Thank you.” C
onnor said softly.
“I need to go now, but take care of yourself, okay?” The bright, cheery-ness that Connor knew so well had returned to Leon’s tone. “I’ll see you soon. Someone needs to come down and help with the baby.”
“See you soon.” Connor parroted before he hung up the phone.
With a sigh, he slumped in his chair.
He knew he needed to talk to Gavin and he needed to do it soon, but he just couldn’t bring himself to break the little bubble of happiness that they had built. All it would take was one wrong word for everything to come crumbling down.
CHAPTER 11 - GAVIN
THE SWEET SMELL of candied cherries filled the air as Gavin slid the last of the pies into the oven and closed the door.
There, he could finally take a break.
Mark’s daughter had been sick, and Alex was sick as well, so it was just Gavin and Jeff in the kitchen.
Luckily they didn’t have any big orderers or events coming up so the work load was manageable, but two people trying to do all the baking for the shop was still pretty hectic.
Gavin had just slumped over onto one of the stools when he heard the door open. He raised his head from his arms and was greeted with the sight of Jeff walking towards him.
This might have been a cause for concern when Gavin had first started working at Sweet Beginnings, but after the wedding incident, Jeff had begun to warm up to Gavin. Gavin was even beginning to consider them friends.
Jeff wasn’t exactly the most exuberant, expressive person, but Gavin was beginning to appreciate his calm nature and dry sense of humor. It was a good contrast to Mark, who practically ended up bouncing off the walls some days, Alex, who was pretty high strung in nature, and even Gavin himself, who had a tendency to jump into things feet first without really thinking them through.
Normally Jeff would greet whoever was on shift with a small smile and get right to work. Today, however, Jeff’s expression was carefully blank and Gavin felt himself frown at the sight.
“Gavin, I think we need to talk.” Jeff’s voice was firm but not unkind. He reached into the fridge and pulled out a wrapped blob of prepared pastry dough. He separated the dough into two parts, put them on the counter, and handed Gavin a rolling pin.
Wordlessly, Gavin accepted the wooden tool and began to roll out the pastry. He wasn’t exactly sure what they were making, but Jeff would have to tell him eventually.
They had been working together for so long that Gavin knew better than to press Jeff to talk before he was ready. The older omega would explain when it was the appropriate time, not before and not after.
Gavin had the majority of his dough rolled out when Jeff began to speak.
“So, how are things with you and Connor?” Jeff seemed like he was aiming for a casual tone but he missed the mark a little. Gavin could hear just the slightest bit of tension evident in Jeff’s carefully controlled voice.
Over the past few months, Gavin had begun to confide in Jeff quite a bit. Jeff had obviously been concerned about Connor and it had just felt right to keep him in the loop, not to mention the fact that the two had become fast friends over the many times Connor came to the bakery to visit Gavin.
Gavin knew that Connor and Jeff talked on their own, but he also knew that Jeff still worried about the younger omega and felt immensely protective of him.
The question was a bit odd, but this was Jeff so Gavin was never exactly sure what to expect. “Everything is great, why?”
For Gavin, everything was better than great. Connor had practically moved in to Gavin’s apartment and Gavin had slowly taken to baby proofing things whenever he got the chance. They hadn’t actually talked about it, but Gavin had to assume that Connor was going to move in officially once the baby was born.
Gavin had a two bedroom apartment whereas Connor had a studio. They could easily convert the guest bedroom into a nursery whereas with Connor’s place the baby wounding have his or her own room.
Jeff put down his own rolling pin and looked at Gavin. “Look, I’m not saying this to be rude, but did you ever actually tell Connor how you felt or what your intentions are? You’re getting close to his due date and…” Jeff’s voice trailed off and he began to roll the dough again, but this time he rolled it out with a bit more anger, as if the dough had done something to him.
Over the time that Gavin had gotten to know Jeff, he had realized that the omega had a past that he wasn’t particularly forthcoming about. He never talked about his family and he never dated. Jeff was close to Alex, Mark, and now Gavin and Connor to some extent, but Gavin had never heard him talk about any other friends our acquaintances outside of the ones he met through the shop.
While Jeff asked for updates, when Gavin mentioned things about Connor or the baby, Jeff got noticeably tense.
Not tense in a way that told Gavin that he needed to stop talking, Jeff had made it very clear that he cared and wanted to help Gavin and Connor in any way that he could, but tense in a way that Gavin could tell that there was some history that Jeff didn’t particularly want to bring up but that also made Jeff have strong emotions about the entire situation.
The question itself was odd. Gavin and Connor definitely needed to talk, but at this point Gavin thought that it was pretty clear where he intended to go with this relationship. He loved Connor, he hadn’t said it out loud yet, sure, but it was pretty obvious to Gavin that Connor felt the same way.
“Of course! I take him to all of his appointments, we basically live together now and I’ve started baby-proofing my apartment. We’re dating, it’s serious. What else could be going on?” Gavin looked away and felt his face heat up. “I know it’s soon, but I’ve been looking at rings. Maybe not now, but soon. It would be a long engagement but…” Gavin let his voice trail off.
They had only been together for just under six months, but Gavin already knew that Connor was the one. He wanted to make it official before the baby was born. Yes the child wouldn’t be Gavin’s biologically, but he or she would be Gavin’s in every way that mattered.
Gavin could hear Jeff inhale sharply. “That’s all great, I’m happy for you, but have you told him? Actually, verbally, told him?” Jeff’s voice was unreadable.
“I…” Gavin opened his mouth to speak, but he hadn’t. He had never actually told Connor just how much he meant to him, and that Gavin wanted to spend the rest of his life with him.
“You haven’t.” Jeff said flatly, and it wasn’t a question. “Gavin, you have to understand, he has you and he has his family but he’s absolutely terrified. His world got turned upside-down overnight, by someone he had known most of his life. Why would he believe that someone that he has only known for a few months would stick around? You know how you feel, but does he? Does he know that you’re serious about being there for him and the baby, even though you’re not the father?”
Gavin froze. He hadn’t thought of it like that. He had told his parents about Gavin, of course it was serious on Gavin’s end, but he had really, really, overestimated how much communication was actually going on between himself and Connor.
They were cohabiting, they were sleeping together in both senses of the word, but they had never really verbally affirmed just what exactly they were doing.
Gavin had gone out and looked at rings for heaven’s sake. He was an absolute idiot.
To Gavin, it felt like he had known Connor forever. The omega just fit so perfectly into his life and filled a void that Gavin hadn’t even known had existed. He knew on a superficial level that it was different from Connor’s perspective but he hadn’t really internalized just how different it had to be.
They were moving fast and that was okay, but they also had to get on the same page, which at the moment, they were far, far from.
“Gavin, you need to listen.” Jeff’s voice cut through Gavin’s racing thoughts. It was kind, but also the kind of voice that signaled that Gavin needed to listen.
Jeff took a deep breath. “I was in a similar position
to Connor. I was,” Jeff took another breath and his remaining words came out quickly, like he had to get them out before he lost the nerve. “Pregnant. I was pregnant, and my fiancé left, and I lost it, and…” Jeff looked away from Gavin and took a moment before he continued. “Anyways. Connor is lucky that he has you and his family to support him but you need to talk this out, and you need to do it soon. It’s not all on you, but you need to be the strong one right now. He’s not in an easy position.”
Gavin had to keep his face carefully calm. Jeff was quiet and kept to himself, and this was the most that Gavin had ever learned about Jeff in the entire time that he had known the omega. While he still didn’t know the entire situation, and knew better than to ask, a lot of Jeff’s little quirks and mannerisms suddenly made a whole lot more sense in addition to his immediate protectiveness of Connor.
“Thank you.” Gavin said softly. “And for what it’s worth, I’m sorry about…” His voice trailed off.
Jeff shrugged uncomfortable and kept looking at the pastry dough before him. “It’s been a while. But thank you.”
It may have been a while for Jeff, but old wounds obviously didn’t heal quickly. Gavin couldn’t go back and help a younger Jeff, but he could help Connor.
Taking the step and actually discussing what they were wouldn’t be easy, but Gavin could do it, for Connor’s sake.
CHAPTER 12 - CONNOR
CONNOR DIDN’T REALLY mean to do it, but every time he saw Gavin he made it a point to avoid the inevitable conversation.
They needed to talk about what they were doing, but every time that Connor felt like Gavin was going to steer the conversation in that direction, he quickly changed the subject.
He could tell that Gavin knew what Connor was trying to do, but he also knew that Gavin walked on eggshells around him sometimes and would he hesitant to push if he knew that Connor was uncomfortable with something.
