“Damnit, McCord, what’s happened to all your other operatives? They up and quit on you?”
McCord allowed himself a frosty smile. “Nobody ever quits on me, Brand. I like to keep my people.”
“So why am I so popular?”
“Because you are the only man who can tackle this particular assignment.” McCord leaned forward. “Remember when you’d been with the US Marshal office for a year? You were on assignment in Galveston. The case involved a series of murders of prominent businessmen. It turned out they were the work of a hired killer. You broke the case but the assassin got away.”
“I remember.”
“The killer was a man who had never been identified. No one had ever seen him face to face. You did, Brand. You saw his face. Would you know him again?”
Brand nodded. “I’d know him.”
“Good. That’s why you and this assignment go together.”
McCord leaned back in his seat and stared out of the window, gathering his thoughts.
“In a week a British Lord will arrive in Washington. He’s a member of the British Government, and because of his involvement with extensive investments here, he’s a guest of the United States Government. While he’s in the country he intends to do a lot of travelling. Mainly he will be based in Montana. He’ll be attending the Stockgrowers Convention up in Miles City, and afterwards he’ll go further north. You will be with him, Brand, from the moment he sets foot outside his hotel in Washington.”
“There a good reason?”
“Our information has it that while he’s here someone is going to try to kill him. The reason you are on the assignment is that our information states that the man being paid to do the killing is the assassin known as Raven. The man you almost caught. The man you can identify by sight.”
Brand closed his eyes and decided to catch some sleep. He figured he might as well get as much as he could during the trip. Once he was back in Washington it didn’t look as if he would get the opportunity. McCord and his new assignment would see to that.
